Gunman Still on the Loose; 5 Remain in Good Condition, 1 in Serious Reporting Suzanne Le Mignot CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Six people were shot August 1 during a funeral service outside a West Side church. Police say the incident is gang-related.
Gunfire erupts outside a funeral, police think they might know why.
The service was just starting at a West Side church, when someone opened fire outside shooting six people.
The reverend was shocked to see his service interrupted by that kind of violence.
"This is broad daylight and anybody could have been hurt. This is very unfortunate," said Rev. Renaldo Kyles.
Police say the shooting was gang-related. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.
Six people were shot four men and two women. As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a 34-year-old man was at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition, two men, ages 27 and 37 were listed in good condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, a 45-year-old woman was at Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, a 35-year-old man was in good condition at Rush University Medical Center and a 27-year-old woman was at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in good condition, police said.
Those attending the funeral are just stunned by the boldness of the shooter.
"It's sad, because they have no respect for the dead and none for the living, and it's also sad they did it in front of a church," said Delionel Nash, a cousin of the deceased.
The funeral of 28-year-old Cornelius Antwon Robinson was taking place in a West Side church. Outside, mourners were gathered. A person walked up to a man on the sidewalk, pressed a gun into his abdomen and shot him five times. Then the person started shooting at the people around the man he targeted. A total of six people were shot.
"There was a time when the church was sacred and people don't even have respect for the House of God anymore it's just very tragic," Kyles said.
"I think it's totally disrespectful the individual that's laying in there, he wasn't about that, he wasn't like that," said mourner Keyonna Kyles.
The Gospel Truth Life Church at 5301 W. Madison was filled with an overflow crowd with more funeral attendees standing outside when shots were fired at around noon, Chicago police said.
"We were clapping our hands and praising the Lord when the shots started and we hit the floor," said a woman who had been inside the church attending the funeral.
"It's obvious somebody was out for revenge," said the woman, who did not want to give her name.
Police say Robinson, who died of a heart attack, was an admitted gang member. Sources say he has at least 15 arrests for multiple crimes. Police say the shooting outside Robinson's funeral, was gang-related. Police say right now, they know the target of the shooting was a gang member. It's believed some of the people who were hit, could have been innocent bystanders, while others were gang members.
"We has a couple of witnesses who are cooperating, most of the witnesses that are out there, are not cooperating," said Deputy Chief Roberto Zavala of the Area 5 Chicago Police Department.
The gunman remains on the loose. Police are looking at video from two pod cameras in the area to help find him.
A couple of thoughts. First, please tell me police have better grammar than that. Second, the rest of the witnesses would like to be alive later this week.
I see Hope and Change is alive and well in Chicago
Exactly. The "no snitching" code of the 'hood has more to do with self preservation than it does sticking it to the man.
They really need someone to organize their community.
You would think after decades of this kind of crap people would vote out the democrats who are in charge. Of course Daley makes sure every election goes his way.
More ‘Hope & Change’ in America. /s
Chicago seems such a nice and friendly place. Maybe next year.
They should outlaw guns in Chicago, that would stop all this violence! /sarc
it is a quagmire, eject IL from the union.

Chicago: Not as safe as Gaza.
This is the strongest statement the reverand could muster? Pathetic.
Amish??
This crap has been going on in Chicago for a century now, going all the way back to Al Capone and Bugs Moran.
What a bunch of animals these gangbangers are. No respect for life; no respect for the mourners; no respect fot the church.
I would hate to work in the ER in any Chicago hospital...trying to put people back together again all day and all night.
God bless all the police, firefighters, paramedics and emergency personnel in that city and elsewhere.
St. Michael the Archangel, watch over them tonight in all the cities of our land.
The race hustlers will place the blame on whitey as soon as they can and that includes our resident of the U.S.
A 28-year-old gangsta dies... from a heart attack?
How ironic is that?
We need to pull our troops out now. It’s a quagmire. Our mere presence there only helps them recruit more enemies. < /sarc>
I'm sure there were many attendants packing at this funeral, legal CCL or not.
Drug use, I presume.
Yeah, somebody probably offed him with a hot shot.
Yeah, Len Bias died of a heart attack, too. If you get my drift. Not saying it’s impossible to be natural causes but...
livin in a thug paradise...
Don't know about that but the end result is the same.
That rhyming eyewitness statement could totally be a rap music lyric, yo.
It’s a high pressure job
cocaine can cause heart attacks in young people
This crap has been going on in Chicago for a century now, going all the way back to Al Capone and Bugs Moran.
Yeah, but Al was over in Cicero, and outside of bombing Dr. Percy Julian's house in Oak Park, it was a racially sensitive township. Besides, I made out with a few nurses from West Sub.
Funny story, true...the Baptists at the church on Austin Blvd used to take a bus and go into the Madison Ave ghetto and pickup black kids and bring them to Sunday school. However, when the parents started coming too, then the parishoners got upset.
That does not make the Bapists look good. The bond between Christians should outweigh the difference in race. I learned that when I was about six...
Jesus loves the little children,
all the children of the world;
red and yellow, black and white
they are precious in his sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
After years of anti-gun control, Chicago is doing a good job.
Oh....By the way:
Illinois: Land of Lincoln
Chicago: Land of Capone
What gang sign is 0bama flashing there?
"This funeral so good, I gotta bust me some damn caps!"
Agree, wholeheartedly.
Community organizing gone wrong.
And people are worried about Mexico!?
I'm not sure, but it goes well with his new Obamassiah t-shirt:
...that is until he gets "home"....
A lot of background noise that the election of The One means that the bad guys will get free passes in front of the bench.
I think Chicago has become ground zero for that sort of thinking.
I'll bet the heart attack was caused by cocaine. More black people behaving badly. The consequence is that everyone else will get pounded with more gun control. The politicians are too spineless to point the finger at the real problem.
