I Was A Racial Profiler
New York Daily News ^ | Sunday, August 2nd 2009 | JAKE MCNICHOLAS

Posted on 08/02/2009 10:32:22 AM PDT by van_erwin

"I'm retired now, but in my day we knew who to look for to make arrests. And they were white people."

I'm retired now after a wonderful career with the New York City Police Department, and I have a confession to make.

I used a person's race to initiate investigations and make subsequent arrests. In fact, according to the definition bandied about by those on the left who have no idea what they are talking about nor a clue when it comes to police work, I was - yes - a racial profiler.

A little background. I was a detective, a third generation member of the greatest police department in the world, descendant of my grandfather who sailed from the west of Ireland and then served as a cop for 35 years. My dad, the man I most admire, is a retired first grade detective who put in 33.

In November 1992 I was transferred to Manhattan North Narcotics. We covered the precincts north of 59th St. but rarely did enforcement south of 96th St.

I never had a better time in my life than my early years in Manhattan North. I worked with the greatest guys in the world and had more laughs than you could imagine. I went to war with these guys and gals, white, black, Hispanic.

Put it this way. When you were up there during this time, you didn't want to take off or go on vacation and miss something. There was nothing worse than coming back to work and have some guy say, "Wow, you should have been here yesterday."

I spent a lot of time in Washington Heights during those years, working narcotics in the confines of the 30th Precinct. It was a busy place with loads of illegal drug activity - dealing on the street and in residential buildings outfitted and barricaded as drug spots. We made arrests, thousands of arrests, and here is one of the ways the white cops and Hispanic cops and black cops did it.

We looked for white people.

That's all you really had to do. Cruise Broadway or Amsterdam Ave. or Riverside Drive in an unmarked car, spot the white guy driving the vehicle with the Jersey plate slow and deliberate, watch him park and shuffle to the sale location, watch him walk back to the vehicle with the pep in his step shortly thereafter and bingo. Most times you had a collar.

That's what you were paying us for, wasn't it? The good people of Washington Heights have a right to live in a neighborhood free of cretins driving over the George Washington Bridge to Manhattan for the sole purpose of buying drugs, don't they?

Is that not good police work? Of course it is.

So please, ponder this for a moment. Who do you think is terrorizing the black community? Who do you think is raping and assaulting young black women? Who do you think is pulling out the nine and shooting young male blacks on the corner over a bag of Cheez Doodles and a Philly blunt?

Pause and ask yourself why do you think more blacks and Hispanics are stopped? Because, you guessed it, they are the ones committing the crimes and fitting the description. The Police Department is not making this up. This is the horrible truth. The carnage is appalling, and rather than address the real issue, liberals and civil rights leaders make excuses and ignore the facts.

Now the left is all worked up over a cop responding to a 911 call of a burglary in progress and the resulting collar. Henry Louis Gates Jr. is a Harvard professor. How about this novel approach, "Certainly, here's my ID and thanks for the quick response Sergeant."?

But here is the most profoundly sad part about it all. Even after Thursday's "beer summit," this will be an issue for months, a ridiculous issue. And all the while the body count from black-on-black crime will continue to rise.

McNicholas served with the NYPD from 1985 to 2007, retiring as a first grade detective from the terrorist interdiction unit of the Intelligence Division.

One thing he failed to mention is that black on white violent crime is 9-1 vs. white on black violent crime.

I’ll start to listen to dirtbags like gates and obama when they address this issue. I am tired of all the murder, rape, assault, robbery, etc. We cannot even go into many of our cities anymore because of all the violence.

Racial profiling is wrong but usually nothing more than feelings get hurt. People end up dead because of violent crime. I am ready for obama or gates to tackle that issue for us.

Again, racial profiling is WRONG but I want them to address the violence coming from the black community.

The MSM only cares about a story if they can make a cop look bad - they don't care about crime or killings or the good people who are trapped in these hell hole neighborhoods... their sympathy is too often with the criminal...

This is not a "free" country when there are huge areas of all big cities where it is unsafe to walk after dark and in many cases before dark too.

For those of us who still have a measure of sanity, we gave in much too easily on profiling.

PROFILING IS BOTH GOOD AND NECESSARY. We use it all the time, in fact nearly every day.

If an airplane is to be hijacked, due you think it's more likely that the hijacker will be an 80 year old Swedish woman or a 22 years old middle eastern type? Nobody who isn't as stupid as Norm Minetta should have any problem with that.

Certain types of people commit certain types of crimes at much greater frequency. The idea that everyone is equal is stupidity squared. No sane person would sign on this concept.

I've racially profiled my entire life and it has kept me safe. Others I've know who decided to be PC to the max have got themselves hurt or otherwise victimized.

No, Racial Profiling is good and necessary. Heck even Jessie Jackson admitted to it once. He retracted the statement immediately but we all know it was true.

Don't be afraid of those who accuse you of profiling. It's essentially playing the odds. In fact, that's a good answer to the question if someone asks if you racially profile. Just tell them you play the odds.

One thing he failed to mention is that black on white violent crime is 9-1 vs. white on black violent crime.

It's actually much greater than that. The 9-1 ratio is if you count Hispanics as white. Although certain types of Hispanics are in fact white, but that's a complicated story. Social Scientists use the 9-1 because it looks better than the 20-1 when you use non-hispanic whites.

The numbers are fantastic when you consider the crime of rape. The rape of a black woman by a white man or white men is a fantastically rare crime. Many large Metropolitan areas can go 20-30 years without a single case. In fact this crime is close to zero statistically. Only when you count Hispanics as white do you get just a very few cases nationally.

These are FACTS that need to get into the head of the general population. The MSM certainly isn't going to do it. They will report the very few cases of whites attacking blacks (usually retaliation) over and over again. This creates the illusion that the crime disparity is much less than what it actually is.

The great (and brave) writer Heather McDonald has written extensively about this.

Gates believes that all (or at least most) whites are racist. His degree, teachings and position all depend on that proposition. He kept pushing the white officer until Crowley 'proved' it by arresting him.

So, yeah, he could have prevented it, but not without admitting to himself he has been wrong all these years.

Gates’ career was made discovering “racial bias” in literary and cultural works. He expected racial bias in his dealings with the police. He obviously made a mistake. At least he acknowledged as much in his statement after he was released, even though it was couched in language about “narratives.”
He punked himself.

The liberal argument is disingenuous. You cannot curse a cop, you cannot incite a riot, you cannot make false accusations of racism in order that people in the street are stirred into violence against the police. We are not going to establish a lie that white cops are racists because Gates screams it and police must walk away and give tacit consent - it only will bring about greater harm to the police in the future. The false charges will be answered and dealt with. This is what Skippy Gates did. He made a minstrel show out of this in order to get arrested. This is Tawana Brawley and the mythical “Irish supremacists” that raped her, according to Al Sharpton. These are people who are free to lie and immune from accountability because of what happened decades ago in Selma. It seems they cannot get beyond it, they are stuck in a Rosa Parks do loop that never changes - and because it still works.

There was no profiling, the police were called to the house, at risk of their own lives and to protect the life and property of Skippy Gates. Even Colin Powell admitted Gates was wrong.

Further, you cannot have this discussion of racial profiling without discussing the catastrophe of black crime. Gates and Obama act like it doesn’t exist, they act like the cops just do this without any real knowledge of the streets or crime statistics. The incidence of black crime far outweighs anything on the criminal spectrum - blacks are seven times more likely to be incarcerated that whites - is that James Crowley’s fault. A white woman is 100 times more likely to be raped by a black man than a black woman is to be raped by a white man. Does that fact resonate with anyone? Gun crime and violence is off the charts, go to Camden or Newark NJ - do you think there is a reason that the police are a little jumpy? When these cowards refuse to talk about these hard cold facts and chalk everything up to white racism - you don’t have a dialogue, you have a raving demagogue spewing propaganda that enriches himself at the expense of the truth. That would be Gates, Wright and Obama.

(By the way, had Crowley said “Yo Mama” to Gates, we would have never heard the end of how he ‘viciously taunted him.’)

I’m a Deputy Sheriff, I have been in an Officer Involved Fatal Shoot, worked Narcotics, Drug Intervention and you name it I’ve seen it.

All I can ask is for God to prepare me to accept the difference between being compassionate for those in need and strong enough to address those who come to do their evil deeds; and to live without doubt or remorse of the actions I was required to protect and to serve those with in my keep.

I agree with this Officers posting and anyone with common sense should. We should not discriminate or profile by race and we shouldn’t discriminate justice to the victims of crime due to the race of the aggressor.

As far as “addressing the issue” of racial profiling, Gates and Obama ALREADY DID! This is what is LEFT of the always dubious concept of “racial profiling”, this whole sorry-ass follow up on a burglary attempt and the “reverse”
racial profiling practiced by Gates and Gates alone.
RP is like an issue in search of an opportunity: this one on the face of it looked as lame as any, as made up, but consider the juicy circumstances that presented themselves as just ssssooooooooo irresistible : A ‘renowned’ Harvard Professor, IN HIS OWN HOUSE, mildly disabled, being bullied by a pigheaded cop who arrests him ON HIS OWN FRONT, RIGHT NEAR HARVARD’S IVY COVERED WALLS NO LESS!
SO-—this suggests that they CREATE racial profiling (of necessity black on white racial profiling) when the “other”
kind has been dormant so long, they can’t bear to see it get consigned to the ash-heap of social historyh.THEY DO IT FOR THE OPPORTUNITY to re-open a can of dead worms they are eager to breathe life into, and to get a “dialogue” going on race, or this issue, or whatever.....all the imaginary problems they cling to , because they’ve made careers out of scratching that itch. It would be laughable if it weren’t so pathetic.

Gates was arrested because he couldn't control his hate for white people.

All his pent up racism came out and caused him to break the law.

He's a big cheese (how many times did I see black pundits on TV say that?), entitled, distinguished, and has a cute nickname: Skippy.

Oh, and he is not white.

So Obama bailed him out.

Quite stupidly, I might add.

Personally, I say the police should stay OUT of the black neighborhoods. Let ‘em “police” themselves. That leaves more police officers to patrol the areas of the cities that appreciate and respect the job of police officer. Coincidentally, that will coincide with the neighborhoods that pay the majority of the taxes that FUND police departments.

Seriously, that would work. No racial profiling! The anti-Americans are left alone without the racist police officers clogging their “pristine” neighborhoods. Voila! Everyone is happy. Right???
