Mayor Bloomberg was a finalist to be Sen. John McCain's running mate, says book
The New York Daily News ^ | 2009-08-04 | Adam Lisberg

Mayor Bloomberg said Tuesday he never thought he was on the short list to be Republican Sen. John McCain's running mate last year -- even though a new book claims he was one of the six finalists for the coveted slot.

McCain's staff took Bloomberg's chances seriously, the book claims -- especially when they were told to set up a short podium for the still-secret vice-presidential candidate.

"When I told them to lower it for someone who was 5-7, they thought it was Bloomberg," McCain aide Davis White says in "The Battle for America 2008: The Story of an Extraordinary Election," by Washington Post reporters Dan Balz and Haynes Johnson.

The book claims Bloomberg was a finalist along with his friend Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, and the eventual choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

. . . . .

The book claims Bloomberg's support for abortion rights hurt his chances, and McCain eventually chose the untested Palin to shore up support among conservatives and women -- as well as to reinforce his maverick image.

One Democrat, a whole bunch of RINOs, and...Palin. Good grief.

McCain should’ve picked his goofy daughter.

Doesn’t really matter. McCain was set up by the MSM to lose to Hillary...then the perfect storm happened with Obama and the Liberals were able to fulfill their wildest dreams.

Lieberman is pro-abortion and he was a finalist up to the last second.

I don’t think I could see a single NYC teacher voting for a McCain-Bloomberg ticket. (I know many who liked Palin.)

Shoulda picked him, then McCain could have lost by a landslide instead of by a little, and maybe we wouldn’t have been hearing much out of him now.

On the other hand, could Sarah Palin have achieved prominence (despite all the grief and crap) without being VP candidate? Probably not...

"One Democrat, a whole bunch of RINOs, and...Palin. Good grief."

And the sad thing is that the GOP thinks it is the conservatives who are hurting the party. We are screwed.

To his credit, he chose Sarah Palin. To his discredit, he played a key role in trying to embarrass her publicly. And now we learn that he was considering Mayor Bloomberg as his running mate? It’s too bad that he didn’t. With Michael Bloomberg as your running mate he would have lost by 20 points, instead of the 6 or 7 he did lose by.

The fact that McCain even remotely considered "blue state" leftists like Bloomberg and Lieberman tells me all I need to know about the guy.

The U.S. would have been the loser of the 2008 election regardless of who won.

A McCain - Bloomberg ticket would have given Bob Barr at least 10% of the vote.

Just my shoot-from-the-hip reaction.

I disagree. Bob Barr would have had closer to 30%.

Well if he was shooting for 10% of the final vote, that was certainly the way to go.

Gee a McCain Bloomberg ticket would have gotten maybe 30% of the popular vote.

Mike Bloomberg
Joseph Lieberman
Tim Pawlenty
Charlie Crist

You know, if he had picked any of the above, at least I could have taken total delight in the GOP losing - by 20 points. What an ugly list, so amazingly bad that it is staggeringly incongruous to find Palin accompanying them on it. I don’t think Palin is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but at least she is a solid Republican on the issues. I mean, aside from DeMint and perhaps a 1-2 others (maybe Coburn?), she is tops for those already in play.

Anyway, what a coincidence - Crist, Pawlenty, Lieberman, and Bloomberg (along with Powell) were all the candidates being pimped by the MSM! I was certain McCain would have selected Crist, Giuliani, or Lieberman because that is what the beautiful people wanted him to do. Bloomberg always seemed like a stretch even for McCain. I could have seen a Giuliani/Bloomberg “Fascism 2008” ticket happening if enough snowbirds from NY decided to register as Florida GOP primary voters.

See, “it could have been worse”. LOL

Eventually, but not in time for 2012.

And face it, with conservative voters staying home in droves we probably already the damage down the ticket would have been a lot worse. We already would have Obamacare passed as well as the Amnesty For Illegals And Mexican Immigation Encouragement Act of 2009 passed.

McCain's only positive legacy in the minds of Republicans will be his choice of Sarah Palin (although it sounds like he didn't plan it that way).

if the end result would have been the same...an Obama presidency...I would have much rather seen McCain and Bloomberg go down in flames together and keep Palin’s powder dry as the best-kept secret of 2012

Bloomers is too far left of McCain. It would have given Obama a 95% plurality.

Gloomberg? He had already left the GOP by then and was an indie. Still is AFAIK despite seeking the GOP nod (his only primary opponent is male nurse Walter Iwachiw). To call him a (former) RINO, it can be taken 100% LITERALLY. He’s an egomaniacal liberal democrat who bought the GOP nod in 2001 over a credible convert Herman Badillo.

Even worse choice than Lieberman.

2 liberal democrats. 1 conservative Republican. 1 mythical egomaniac, 1 squishy Governor (T-paw) and 1 very squishy Governor (Crist).

It’s like Where’s Waldo.

Shouldn’t be a surprise though his consideration of running with liberal democrats, he almost ran with Kerry in 2004 if reports are to be believed. That would have been a boon for Nader.
