There’s so much wrong with vaccine production, quality control, “testing,” and adverse event reporting (i.e.reactions) that it would take all day for me to comment.

b) read the CDC Pink Book, which is the guide to vaccines for physicians

They don’t infect monkeys and then use their kidneys.

By the way, in Clancy’s novel Executive Decisions, Green Monkey kidneys were used to cultivate the Ebola virus. Maybe the author of this got mixed up.

Laboratory cell cultures of mammalian cells are usually grown in a small bottle with a nutrient solution. The cell samples taken from the original donor monkeys happened years ago. The cell lines have been replicated from samples removed from earlier bottles. They aren't killing more monkeys to get the kidney tissue.

I don’t understand the fearmongering about vaccines. I think people are just have phobias about injections. If it were an oral vaccine in pill form there would probably be very little resistance. If it were a shot of saline people would want to know the shelf life, the concentration, where the water came from, and what kind of metal is used in the needle.

People are just freaked out about injecting anything directly into the bloodstream.

In order to make a viral vaccine, you have to first grow the specific virus in some live animal tissue in which that virus will replicate. (Viruses do not replicate outside appropriate host cells.) So the fact that this company is using monkey kidneys to grow the virus isn't shocking nor alarming in and of itself, nor does it necessarily implicate the resultant vaccine - which is made from either killing or weakening the virus after extracting it from the monkey tissue culture medium - as dangerous to use on humans. We simply wouldn't know until it is tested on a sufficient sample of human test subjects and controls.

What is concerning is the talk of government making the vaccine mandatory on the entire population. Obviously, if this swine flu strain proves to act a "typical" influenza virus, with about the same small rate of severe complications and deaths unsually associated with influenza, it would be a prudent idea not to mandate it for everyone, but to recommend it (assuming it is proven safe) only to certain types of individuals. The idea of government mandating it on everyone under these circumstances should raise a good deal of protest and resistance.
