"It is called slave labor and produce or die."

You're also overlooking the Chinese penchant for substandard materials and procedures.

But would you want to ride out an earthquake in one of those buildings? I wouldn’t. If they had to follow our construction codes the development would be much slower.

I saw this sort of thing in Japan too. In the US, road crews block off a road for months. In Japan, they get it fixed overnight.

The US would be able to produce roads this quickly too and with a much higher quality if it wasn’t for lazy Unionized road workers sucking up a month’s pay for a day’s work.

Gee whiz. Last time we had a Chinese invasion, there was a love fest for the invaders. Regular people got banned.

Hell, if the Chinese are smart, they will simply stand by while we destroy ourselves!

Anything can be produced quickly, as long as you don’t give a damn about the consumer. As the old saying goes, you can have your product delivered on time, under budget, and with quality. Pick any two...

I was driving Southbound on the 405 near LAX (I’m in SoCal by the way) and remember seeing an overturned digging machine on the right side of the freeway. There were around 5 CalTrans workers just looking at it in various states of confusion.

That machine was there for about a week in the same state. They still have a “Date of Completion” for the 405 expansion tagged for December 2008. I need to take a picture of that.

But back to the original article — part of the problem is all of the environment impact studies, permits, and other bureaucratic nonsense that we have to go through in order to get a development off of the ground. I’m sure the ChiComs have it much easier.

Step 1. Send Bribe to Government Official.
Step 2. Take him out to dinner.
Step 3. Buy him a Buick.
Step 4. Build with shoddy materials.
Step 5. Profit.

Amazing. You’ve posted great photos!

But do you see the possible downside of all that sudden growth? Look at Japan, at the class of people known as “freeters”. Built so quick, then there is nothing left to be built. You then lose all the knowledge base. They retire and die. Then no one knows how to do things any more.

I’ve personally observed such technology-mix generational obsolescence in a number of industries, just in my lifetime. Nuclear. Freight Railroad. Oil refining. Airplanes. A burst of overwhelming new development that fills the “space”, and then massive layoffs, retirement and death of those who have the knowledge base. Replacement of those who understand how to do from scratch, with those who know how to milk the established technology and starve off new development as a risk factor to their established order and connections, and finally things start breaking down and teh system then has no ability in management structure or people resources to address the break down.

Perhaps it is that the equivalent of such growth spurts in a human body are called cancer — possibly non-malignant, but cance?
