An economist is saying the recession is over, Goldman Sachs is making money again and the Dow Jones is up almost 5.5% for the year. But Shangrai-La this is not.
According to this telling report, middle class folks in Detroit are hungry. That's right -- they don't have enough food:
"The food crunch is intensifying, and spreading to people not used to dealing with hunger. As middle class workers lose their jobs, the same folks that used to donate to soup kitchens and pantries have become their fastest growing set of recipients.
'We've seen about a third more people than before,' said Jean Hagopian, a volunteer at the New Life food pantry, part of the New Life Assembly of God church in Roseville, a suburb some 20 miles northeast of Detroit. Hagopian said many of the new people seeking assistance are men, former breadwinners now in desperate need of a food basket."
And it's not just Motor City: for the first time, more than 34 million Americans are recieving food stamps -- that's about one in nine Americans. Looks like those green shoots aren't everywhere.

They are so lying. The last little surge in the stock market was fixed big time. Just ask a widely read financial newspaper. Instead of moving up over 9000, it should have -125.
obama voters?
Good post. It will get worse IMHO.
parsy.
Wow, I thought you saw these kind of stories only when a Republican was in the White House.
Response: That many illegal aliens Eh!
And now it’s going to be illegal to grow your own.
obama 08=depression 09 not just a bumper sticker anymore
Response: They are dieting.
Of course Goldman Sachs is “making” “money.” They’re on the dole!
Yes but that bill HR 2749 still has to pass the senate and hopefully we can put a stop to it. I hope everyone remembers that one when they come back because with the hitler health care I worry no one will pay attention.
F Detroit, bunch of damn union scum. let them go hungry.
Gee, I think I’m going to start a business giving away free cars, and then when I have lines going around the corner day after day I’m going to conclude that there’s a car shortage.
Well, it is the Republicans’ fault, of course, and the Dems are working very hard to straighten out the mess that they inherited from the Republicans. /s
Obama’s plan:
Work hand in glove with the wealthy on Wall Street - if he takes care of them with taxpayer money they will keep the democrats fat with cash. Bascically Obama will use them to launder taxpayer money that will end up in the democrats pockets.
Channel billions or trillions in stealth reparations to the mooching class - like the billions of stimulus dollars that are being channeled to them for free college in the form of college loans and assistance that will never be paid back. Or the home mortgages they will never pay back, the phony jobs with ACORN financed by stimulus money and the huge expansion in government jobs. Obama will gradually expand their numbers and give them greater economic power, individually and collectively. They will be even more firmly locked up on the democrat plantations.
Destroy the free market sector businesses and jobs that are the wealth generator for the non-union, non-government, white middle class where most of the conservative and republican strength eminate. He will gradually sap the economic strength of the white middle class which will lead to less and less political clout.
Wait! I thought there was an obesity epidemic! I’m so confused. /sarc
Thats the first indicator that the story is an out and out lie!
Roseville is a suburb of Detroit whose southern boundary begins at about 9 or 10 mile road which is just north of the Detroit northern boundary of 8 mile rd. It then extends north to about 14 mile rd............
Second of all, the story does not identify the income level of these "hungry middle class people".
Third, there are very few middle class folks living and working in Detroit, most of them still working in Detroit have left the high city income tax and moved to the suburbs........
The church I used to attend participated with a group of other churches in providing food and lodging for a week for the indigent who were mostly your street alcoholics. There were some down and out folks who sought refuge there and the church volunteers went out of their way to help them find permanent shelter and jobs but those numbers were very low.
I could eat off about $35 bucks a week and never go hungry. Can you say BEANS and RICE!
Couple that with an air rifle and I'd have bird every day!
..............and there are only 42 million on food stamps!
Send them to the White House or to the Congressional restaurant. I’m sure Pelosi and Reid have food to spare.
Please see reply 11 FromLori, she has the latest on that bill. Hasn’t passed the Senate, evidently.

For now, yes. But as more and more folks stock up on beans and rice as they are, the prices will go up, like everything else.
I know that I am a frequent goodwill shopper. I have pretty much furnished my house and closet, as well as decorated my home from Goodwill. The prices have gotten almost ridiculous for used items. The demand is very high now. There are always at least 15-20 shoppers in everytime I go now, compared to 2-3 in years past. The selections are getting much lower as people are hanging on to their old stuff and therefore supply and demand is driving prices up.
Anyone who wants to know how the economy is doing would do well to check out their local thrift stores/goodwill stores and see if prices are getting higher, if there are more shoppers and less items to choose from. It is a pretty good barometer since for the last 10 years or so, only the poor and the thrifty have frequented these places. It is not the case anymore. I even see teens in there doing clothes shopping and bragging about the deals they are finding. Look out Hollister, A&F, and American Eagle-the kids are buying these brands at Goodwill for 4 bucks a pair right now, but they used to be 2.50 a pair last year. Still a great price, but they almosted doubled in a year, same with lots of other stuff.
Thanks very much Lori, I appreciate the link for a chance to read it again.
Your most welcome.
