CBS News Covers Up Abortion Funding in Health Care in Misleading Factcheck

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- CBS News has become the latest mainstream media outlet to come under criticism from pro-life advocates for covering up the abortion funding tucked away in the government-run health care plan. The Associated Press had covered up the abortion funding but recently flip-flopped and admitted it exists.

In a Thursday news article posted on its web site titled "10 Health Care Reform Myths," CBS News lists number five as "Health Care Legislation Mandates Taxpayer Dollars Pay for Abortions."

"Nothing in the legislation, however, has 'mandated' that abortion services be included in the benefits package," CBS News claims.

CBS News contends the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved an amendment by pro-abortion Rep. Lois Capps, a California Democrat, "that would prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions."

"The amendment would not allow the federal government to either require or prohibit abortion coverage by private insurers," CBS News claims. "It requires at least one plan from the federal health insurance exchange in each region of the country to cover abortion, and at least one of the plans to not cover abortion."

CBS News also cites Dan Gilgoff of U.S. News and World Report who also claims that private health care providers can pay for abortions but not use federal funds, under the plan.

The "factcheck" concludes by saying that Congress "has yet to determine" how the abortion funding issues will be resolved.

Referring to the infamous Bush Air National Guard memos CBS published that later turned out to be fake, Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee says the new factsheet "demonstrates that their analytic and forensic skills have not improved much since that episode."

Johnson tells LifeNews.com that CBS News' analysis of the Capps amendment is off base.

"The Capps Amendment was offered by a lawmaker with a 100 percent decade-long pro-abortion voting record, and it was opposed by all authentic pro-life groups, yet CBS presents the amendment as incorporating an anti-abortion policy," he said.

"In reality, under the Capps Amendment, the federal government would run a nationwide insurance plan that would cover abortion on demand," he explained. "Abortionists would perform elective abortions on government-insured clients, send the bill to the government plan, and get checks from the government to pay for the abortions."

CBS News appears to be taking the word of abortion advocacy groups who are denying that the health care restructuring bills in Congress include abortion funding in order to generate more support for them.

"The amendment contains a meaningless bookkeeping requirement, and that was enough to fool CBS, because they are suckers for misinformation when it comes from their friends," Johnson concluded.

Well CBS, as usual, is lying. The AP reports indeed abortion is paid for in the deathcare bill: http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090805/D99SUC0O0.html.

I wonder if Constant Barack Swill (CBS) is fact checking the claims of the Democrats about their deathcare bill. Oh of course not. That would mean they’re a network not controlled by rank partisans.

This looks fishy to me. Sent this to the snitch site:

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A House of Representatives committee, late Thursday, approved a phony “compromise” amendment to the health care legislation it is considering. The amendment, sponsored by an abortion advocate, gave the impression that it would stop tax-funded abortions in the health care bill but, in reality, would allow it.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has been considering its version of the House government-run health care plan, H.R. 3200.

Rep. Lois Capps, a California Democrat, proposed an amendment that she claimed was a "compromise" between pro-life advocates and abortion proponents.

The amendment explicitly permits the Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, pro-abortion advocate Kathleen Sebelius, to include abortion in the services offered by public option and requires abortion coverage in the government health plan if the Hyde amendment is ever reversed.

HR 3200 authorizes taxpayer-funded affordability credits and he Capps amendment specifically requires taxpayer subsidies to flow to plans that include abortion, but creates an accounting scheme designed to give the impression that public funds will not subsidize abortion.

The Capps amendment also requires that a plan that includes abortion be made available in every region of the country.

Despite bipartisan opposition from Republicans and some pro-life Democrats on the committee, the panel approved the Capps amendment on a 30-28 vote. (Click here for vote listing.)

Pro-life advocates are very disappointed by the vote and worry that abortion advocates can use the Capps amendment to make a phony claim that this version of the House health care restructuring bill does not fund abortions.

Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, told LifeNews.com that the health care bill continues to open the door for abortion funding and insurance mandates for abortions.

"The Capps amendment -- the latest refinement of the phony 'common ground' campaign -- would result in elective abortion being part of the 'public plan' created by the bill," he said.

The Capps amendment "would ensure federal funding of private plans that include elective abortion (under a bookkeeping scheme), and contains other pro-abortion provisions."

Johnson said no rational observer could conclude that Capps was trying to limit abortion funding given that National Right to Life has cataloged 74 votes Capps has cast during her career to promote abortion or stop attempts to limit abortions. She has never cast a pro-life vote, according to NRLC records.
