How to Get Cancer: Move to the United States

The risk of cancer for Hispanics living in Florida is 40 percent higher than for those who live in their native countries, a puzzling new study finds. The finding holds even after researchers corrected for the increase detection rates in the United States. And access to health care did not make things better. "This suggests that changes in their environment and lifestyles make them more prone to develop cancer," said Dr. Paulo S. Pinheiro, a researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The results are detailed in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Cancers of the colon and rectum among Cubans and Mexicans who moved to the United States was more than double that in Cuba and Mexico. Lung cancer among Mexican and Puerto Rican women living in Florida was also double the rates in their countries of origin. Other cancer rates that were higher in the states: * Tobacco-related cancers among Cuban men. * Liver cancer among Puerto Rican men. * Cervical cancer among Mexican women. The findings also show that different ethnic groups face different risks. "Don't assume that all Hispanics are the same," said Amelie G. Ramirez, director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research. "Physicians should probe Hispanic patients more on their background and family history to identify any problematic behaviors that could contribute to health problems." The causes of cancer are myriad, from inherited propensities to viruses to a range of environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Ramirez, who was not involved in the research, notes that nearly one in every three U.S. residents will be Hispanic by 2050. American Association for Cancer Research, Ramirez and Pinheiro suggest Hispanics avoid adopting unhealthy lifestyles ..., such as smoking, drinking and bad diets.

Perhaps things are simply more relaxed where they came from?

Well, the study DID claim to take into account differences in cancer detection rates. After a certain point, cancers are impossible to ignore.

This is very simple. People from second and third world countries ate lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, prepared in a simple, wholesome manner. They come to the US and start eating PREPARED, PROCESSED CRAP!

Over educated people making assumptions, the fact is that they live long enough in the united states to get these diseases, if they were still in their home country they would probably die much younger.

Methods: The study was conducted at the Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, from January 1, 1992, to March 31, 2004. Women were divided into groups of 110 individuals who had died during pregnancy, delivery, or postpartum, and 440 women who survived the postpartum period. We used a logistic regression analysis to find the significant risk factors for maternal deaths. Odds ratios with 95% t confidence intervals were estimated. Results: The maternal mortality ratio was 47.3 per 100,000 live births. The main causes of death were hemorrhage (30.9%), preeclampsia/eclampsia (28.2%), and septic shock (10.9%). Six factors were significantly associated with maternal death: age (OR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.00–1.18), marital status (OR = 16.2, 95% CI = 1.3–196.1), number of antenatal visits (OR = 1.3, 95% CI = 1.0–1.6), preexisting medical conditions (OR = 23.3, 95% CI = 6.6–81.6), obstetric complications in previous pregnancies (OR = 28.3, 95% CI = 4.9–163.0), and mode of delivery (OR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.0–2.4). Conclusions: Socioeconomic, medical, and obstetric risk factors are associated with maternal deaths in Mexico. (BIRTH 34:1 March 2007)

I don't know any. I am good with the German ones; although they tend to be colon-based too.
