President Obama's nominee for surgeon general, whose job it is to help encourage Americans to get thinner and healthier, has been working part time as a scientific adviser to the fast-food giant that sells sandwiches like the Whopper and BK Triple Stacker. Dr. Regina Benjamin, hailed by Mr. Obama for her efforts in running a health clinic in hurricane-ravaged rural Alabama, has been paid $10,000 since last year for serving on a scientific advisory board for Burger King, according to newly filed public financial disclosures.

The WH itself should have always been called, now more than ever, “The Home of the Whopper”.

Non-Profit Doc To Be Surgeon General

July 13th, 2009

From a smitten Associated Press:

Obama chooses Ala doctor as next surgeon general

By Lauran Neergaard, AP Medical Writer

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama turned to the Deep South for the next surgeon general, a rural Alabama family physician who made headlines with fierce determination to rebuild her nonprofit medical clinic in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

An administration official said Obama will announce the nomination of Dr. Regina Benjamin later Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to upstage the official announcement.

The surgeon general is the people’s health advocate, a bully pulpit position that can be tremendously effective with a forceful personality.

Benjamin has that reputation.

A decade ago, the New York Times called her "angel in a white coat," a country doctor who made house calls along the impoverished Gulf Coast, paid whatever her patients could scrounge.

From those early days she has emerged as a national leader in the call to improve health disparities, pushed by the need in her own fishing community of Bayou La Batre, Ala., and its diverse patient mix — where immigrants from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos make up a growing part of the population.

Her nonprofit clinic was rebuilt by volunteers after being destroyed by Katrina, only to burn down months later. Benjamin later told of her patients’ desperation that she rebuild again, recalling one woman who handed her an envelope with a $7 donation to help.

"If she can find $7, I can figure out the rest," Benjamin said last fall as she received a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," money she dedicated to finishing that job.

Benjamin became the first black woman and the youngest doctor elected to the American Medical Association’s board. She also received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights in 1998, and Pope Benedict XVI awarded her the distinguished service medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.

Her nomination for surgeon general requires Senate confirmation.

A quick glance at Wikipedia helps further explain Mr. Obama’s decision:

Regina Benjamin

Regina Benjamin (born in 1956 in Mobile, Alabama) is an American physician, who runs a nonprofit medical clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, in the United States…

Consistent with her strong social conscience, Dr. Benjamin has spent time doing missionary work in Honduras and is on the Board of Physicians for Human Rights. Her interests include environmental issues and eco and adventure travel.

Dr. Benjamin’s clinic was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina and in 2006 by a fire on New Year’s Day, one day before the scheduled reopening. She made headlines when she rebuilt the clinic a second time.

Ms. Benjamin is black, a victim of Katrina – and an environmentalist!

And of course she doesn’t believe doctors should make a profit.

What more could anyone possibly want?

I was gonna say someone should post a photo of this woman because if it is who I think it is she is the last person that should be giving dietary advice to anyone. Glad to see you did it and she is who I suspected.

God Bless her for providing care to her patients but she is largely doing so through input of outside funds. Which is also fine but there was a time when this was called charity. Now the recipients of such largese have come to believe it is their "right". Therein lies the problem and it demonstrates just how large the hill we have to climb is if we are truly to get out from under the mountain of debt our politicians have burdened us with.

Until we begin to implement real solutions that will work our problems will just get bigger.

She seems like a good and decent person, unlike so many of the Kenyan’s appointees. An obese woman, however, should not be the front person in a fight for good health and against obesity. Send her home where she can do the most good.

I had that saved in the running documentation I maintain on Duh!1®, and I'm in agreement with you.

Yes, I was kind of wondering how she got involved with that den of frauds & thieves-- maybe she'll step away from it all.

The quickest way for Burger King to go belly up is to take the advice of government weenies and czars.

They can pack ACORN in with the terrorists and other detainees.

Just simple truth. They can rig up Rube Goldberg contraptions that run fine for a time but if a thing is unsustainable it is just that. We absolutely have to put an end to allwoing unsustainable solutions to even make it to the table, much less be implemented. Just what that is going to require I have no idea but it is simple logic. Actions that make things worse will never be solutions to problems no matter how many people vote for it. It is like voting to repeal gravity, you can do it but don't jump out the window.

I can’t believe that nothing has been done about ACORN yet. On July 23, 2008, the ACORN report was released, identifying ACORN as a criminal organization and to date the Obama bastards have really squashed its existence.
The document can be accessed at:

Ten years ago I decided to on my next pass through the Bible I would pay particular attention to God's word on economics. Over a period of many months I paid careful attention to what He has to say about how we should conduct our financial affairs. Several truths kept surfacing again and again. I went to some length discussing these matters in our Bible Study over months.

One thing is clear. We have an obligation to be charitable. The society of David and Solomon was taxed ten percent (roughly) to provide the services only government can provide. National Security, courts, law enforcement, etc. It seemed to me that if you strip everything else away that is about what we spend on these items. The society of David and Solomon was expected to pay ten percent in tithe to the Temple. This covered salaries for priests, building maintenance, hosting religious "meetings" of which several per year were a tradition attended by most citizens. It also covered to some smaller extent "charity".

Citizens were also expected to provide some portion of their resources for personal charity. Leaving corners of fields ungleaned. Hosting travelers without charge.

So it seemed to me that a citizen who could should divide his resources as follows, 1/10th tithe, 1/10th tax, 1/10th charity. How does this stack up to what we do now? Poorly, I would submit. We have allowed government to confiscate almost all of what would have been tithe from the economy. We have allowed government to suck up almost all of what would be "charity" and "redistribute" it to folks who seem to think receiving it is their "right". Government, finding it cannot make ends meet even by confiscating all these resources has become creative over the decades hoping to prolong the "Ponzi Scheme" by increasing taxes, borrowing from foreigners, and printing funny money.

If I may be so bold, I would submit that we CANNOT fix our broken culture until we "get right" and we need to get right on economics first. We certainly cannot insist our neighbors embrace our faith but we have every right and expectation that they embrace real solutions to real problems that are really sustainable. Continuing to suck up resources into a black hole of irresponsibility and waste are no longer an option. It has to end either now voluntarily or later in disaster. Things really are that siimple no matter how "smart people" try to complicate things. Unsustainable is just that, broke is broken, looters are looters. How it ends is up to the folks currently in charge but it will end.
