Health Care Stirs Up Whole Foods CEO John Mackey, Customers Boycott Organic Grocery Store
ABC News.com ^ | 08/14/09 | EMILY FRIEDMAN

Joshua has been taking the bus to his local Whole Foods in New York City every five days for the past two years. This week, he said he'll go elsewhere to fulfill his fresh vegetable and organic produce needs.

"I will never shop there again," vowed Joshua, a 45-year-old blogger, who asked that his last name not be published.

Like many of his fellow health food fanatics, Joshua said he will no longer patronize the store after learning about Whole Foods Market Inc.'s CEO John Mackey's views on health care reform, which were made public this week in an op-ed piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.

Michael Lent, another Whole Foods enthusiast in Long Beach, Calif., told ABCNews.com that he, too, will turn to other organic groceries for his weekly shopping list.

"I'm boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care," said Lent, 33, who used to visit his local Whole Foods "several times a week."

I love it when liberals eat their own. Mackey's (the WholeFood's CEO) has a WSJ op-ed that is actually quite good and worth a read. It can be found here...

Waiting for the story about all the people who started going to Whole Foods, or returned there, after reading Mackey’s WSH piece. This is more agitprop from ABC. a pillar of the mainstream media, which apparently thinks the entire country is hopelessly naive and ignorant.

How telling though that ABC doesn’t say, “Here are five new shoppers that decided to use Whole Foods based upon this view espoused by the CEO”. It is always steering the conversation, not reporting news. Hopefully, these media outlets die a natural death.

I find this odd about the Wholefoods defectors:

They trust that Wholefoods’ founder has a better idea when it comes to eating right, which is obviously a health-related activity, but they can’t imagine he might have a better idea about improving health care in the USA.

"I'm boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care,"

Did the idiot even read the article? This is no rebuttal at all. As Mackey points out, all American's need food and shelter too, but that doesn't create a "right" to them.

Apparently, Whole Foods covers 89% of it’s employees with some kind of health plan. The folks who decided to shop elsewhere need to ask their new vendors if they, too, cover 89% of their employees. A side note: the ‘organic movement’ is a sham. People go out of their way to buy produce that has no significant nutritional advantage over non-organic crops.

Thanks for the URL. Good article. If only more “liberals” and “progressives” made as much sense.

Though liberal, Mackey is a “evil capitalist” who runs a highly successful and profitable business. The Am-Coms hate that he isn't Left enough.

Agreed, thanks for pointing that out. Now just try and convince all the hippies of that.

Mackey’s op-ed is a great example of ‘value creation’. The government touts ‘value capture’ or methods of taking value from the system which always fails. (Hence the economy today. Where can you find ‘value creation’?)

I’m boycotting ABC news. When it comes on the radio, I tune to a different station or turn the radio off.

I shop at Whole Foods on a regular basis but not because they sell “organic” food rather for items that my local Ralphs (Kroger’s brand out here)doesn’t carry. Some of their stuff is more expensive than the local supermarket chain and some is less (Autumn Wheat cereal for example is cheaper by a $1 a box) They do carry a better quality meat and some produce that I can’t buy at Ralphs and it’s easier than timing my visits to the Farmers Markets to buy some of the heirloom melons, etc.
