Dems abandoning leadership advice By Jared Allen Posted: 08/16/09 01:30 PM [ET] An August in which Democrats were supposed to return home to sell the merits of a universal healthcare plan has turned into one where members are publicly fending for themselves.
Some have even shunned the talking points and tactics their leaders encouraged them to use to gin up support for the Democratic healthcare bill as they’ve engaged with sometimes hostile constituents.
Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) recently lashed out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) recommended talking points aimed at the insurance industry, and criticized her approach in a letter to a local private insurance company, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.
“Regrettably, with passions inflamed throughout the country, Speaker Pelosi recently made inflammatory statements that assailed the character of health insurers across the board. I unequivocally reject those misguided comments,” Yarmouth wrote to the CEO of Louisville-based Humana, the paper reported this week.
Democrats unveiled a line of attack against the private insurance industry after the House failed to move a healthcare bill before August recess, an attack President Barack Obama has taken up in recent days. Pelosi called insurers the “villains” of the healthcare reform debate.
Even Democrats who are not part of the central leadership team were confident that attacking the insurance industry would play well, even in districts where members were due to face a backlash against “socialized medicine.”

The 'rats are leaving the sinking ship. obama's healthcare reform (snort) is going down fast. People have woken up to the idea that it really doesn't improve healthcare in any way, nor reduce costs. Quite the opposite, it will make healthcare services harder to get, lower quality, and more expensive. I trifecta of failure. What obama's plan is really about is socialist nationalization of the healthcare system; bigger government; access to our private banking and health records; and more government control over our lives and shrinking liberties.
While obama has hurt America, and will no-doubt do more damage before he is thrown out of office (where's the birth certificate obama?) long-term he may be good for America. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. After obama, it will be a long long time (generation or so) before America elects anyone nearly as socialist as obama. By the 2010 elections, "socialist" will be a hot-button word. No-one will want to do or say anything that could be construed as socialist. They are going down in flames.
Be very cautious. They are going to push government co-ops.
Rememeber they change the wording to get the same result.
The whole idea needs to go back to the drawing board to prevent any government takeover.

Left wing publications like the Hill are panicked! As they see it, their democrat buddies are doing dumb stuff and from the NY Times to the WaPo to the Hill, tips are being passed out free-of-charge to any political hack willing to take them. Well you can’t blame media types. After all, they work 24/7 getting dems elected and then the dumb politicians get all bent out of shape just because a few of the mouth-breathing members of the serf class start asking questions! “Just shut up, do what Pelosi says and let us shill for you!” Yep, one can hear that advice going out from the MSM nationwide!

Ummm, the big national insurers are already fully prepared to clean up on big Federal contracts and the horrid confusion and inefficiency that will result from upending healthcare.
Medicare is already one of the most profitable lines of coverage for many companies. This plan goes a great deal farther than Medicare, and the profits will be beyond imagining.

Very astute observation. Both the Progressive Caucus and the Black Caucus have drawn a line in the sand, saying that they will vote no without a public option. And both groups are far too nuts to back down from that. Instead I expect more attacks on their savior like the HuffPo leak about the pharma deal. This will be fun to watch!

Grassley and Shelby are already set to compromise for co-ops. Every time the Conservatives compromise the next year the Dems are back for more and we move slowly one more step to the left. Time to put the foot down and keep it there. IF the Dems want to own this let them but please don’t give them a win after all the work we have done to awaken the silent majority!
They never had the “health” of the nation in mind with this ridiculous bill. It was a method of control, a tyranny in the guise of supposed health coverage for all.
