Utah told it can’t count missionaries in census

Bureau says there’s no way to reliably count those overseas in 2010

Aug 16, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY - The U.S. Census Bureau has told Utah's elected leaders it won't count Mormon missionaries serving overseas in the nation's next head count.

Census Bureau officials, rejecting Utah's lobbying efforts for the better part of a decade, say there's no way to reliably count the overseas missionaries.

Utah leaders say the omission cost the state an extra congressional seat in 2000, when the state fell just 857 people short of receiving the last available slot in the U.S. House.

The Census Bureau does count military and federal employees serving overseas, and Rob Bishop, R-Utah, says it should include Mormons on proselytizing missions.

"The bottom line should still be fairness and accuracy," Bishop said. "If we are currently counting some people abroad and not others, there is just no logic to that whatsoever."

An experiment in counting Americans abroad in 2004 turned into a "colossal failure," said Louis Kincannon, a former Census Bureau director under President Bill Clinton.

Few Americans responded to an outreach program in three sample countries — Mexico, France and Kuwait.

What idiots. Of course they can count them. Acorn counts dead people and makes up people all of the time. Why not count real people who should be counted?

When I cut through all of my personal feelings about the LDS Church and Mormonism and look at the issue on its merits, I come to a conclusion.

Utah is right and Washington DC is wrong as usual.

Few Americans responded to an outreach program in three sample countries — Mexico, France and Kuwait.

That is the choice of the individual (assuming they actually received the "memo"...).

And while I may not agree with Mormonism, this shouldn't be about religion. This is about counting citizens of a state (and illegals should NOT count in any way but how many busses and planes are needed (or train cars?) to sent them back to their country of origin.

They say California has 6 million illegals, do you know how many more reps that will add for them?

And that right there is the whole issue - how come illegals get representation in OUR government? Heck, as bad as those from my home state are, I feel like I am not represented - and I am a CITIZEN!!!!

I agree, must as LDS beliefs are anathema to my intellect, - wouldn’t the US embassies in these foreign countries know or their consular offices in the US?

Fine. If they won't count these missionaries so that they can receive their lawfully entitled congressional representation, then those missionaries should be free to skip paying taxes on income they earn.

On that note, I am sure the IRS has zero trouble finding anyone who owes any US federal tax, regardless of where in the world said person may live.

But these same marxists will count the illegals for their own purposes.

They keep prodding the stirring giant that is awakening...and there's going to be some major blow back...starting in 2010.

don’t count missionaries. Just all the illegals, ACORN grifters, homeless parasites (estimate) and the rest of the freak fest that are the democrat party.

Heck, as bad as those from my home state are, I feel like I am not represented ...

You're not represented, that is why. Illegals in the USA have more rights, generally, than legal US citizens and residents:

If you tried to enroll in an out of state public college in some states, you would be expected to pay out of state tuition, not so for an illegal.

If you needed health care and could not pay for it, you'd get it, but then be hounded for the rest of your life to pay for it. Meanwhile, illegals clog our health care system to the brim and rarely pay for anything with no consequence at all.

If you tried enrolling your children in public schools, you'd be expected to provide proof that you live in the district in which you were enrolling. Illegals, even though they are not legal residents of any state, don't have to go through that hassle.

Your perception is reality my friend. Legal citizens get the short end of the stick from what is supposed to be our government.

If Utah was a Democrat state, they would be counted. Wonder what the former Governor now Ambassador to China thinks of this Administration he is now a part.
