Chrysler to make Fiat in Mexico: report
Reuters ^ | 16 Aug 2009 | Anupreeta Das

Chrysler Group is planning to produce Fiat SpA's (FIA.MI) Fiat 500 subcompact at a Chrysler plant in Mexico, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Chrysler is also considering what other Fiat models to introduce to the U.S. market, under directions from its Italian partner, the paper reported on its website on Sunday.

Plans also include making a small Fiat engine for the 500 at a Chrysler plant in Trenton, Michigan, and building a Fiat-derived compact car slightly larger than the 500 in the United States, a source told the paper.

The Toluca, Mexico plant, which currently makes the Dodge Journey crossover and PT Cruiser, is an attractive home for the 500 because cars could be exported to South and Central America where the Fiat brand is popular, the Journal reported.

Fiat acquired a 20 percent stake in Chrysler and entered into agreements to give it access to Fiat technology and platforms. Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in April.

The UAW deserves everything they get that is ill. Yeah - Chrysler is gonna make money making Fiat 500s. LOL!

I do not fault Fiat at all. Some of their small cars are great but a $15,000 car being made by union goons who work 30 hours half somber and make $150,000 in pay and benefits. Making cars that nobody wants.

A few NASCAR retards still love Chevy and Mopar - those companies are dead and gone. They must love Obama.

You have it wrong. Chrysler’s going to sell a car loosely based on the Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 is actually a very good selling and high quality car. The Fiat of today bears no resemblance to the fiascos of the 70’s.

Chrysler is the “comeback company”, and has done so many times in its history, and will do it again. In 3 years Chrysler will be making money, and neither GM nor Ford will.

Yeah right. I know all about Fiat, Di Montezemelo, etc. American car makers never make money on small cars and the 500 sells in europe for peanuts. Fiat was the comeback kid in europe but it still has problems.

Chrysler and GM are dead. Obama keeps them alive til 2012 to carry MI and the midwest. It’s over - I will buy a Honda or BMW before I would by GM or Chrysler.

I think the response is mostly because the government helped bail out Chrysler and set up the buy out by Fiat. The result being cars made in Mexico, vice the U.S.

I know Ford is losing money now, and has about a 1 year and change of capital left, but why do you think Chrysler will be doing better than Ford or GM. I have been making good money off my Ford stock (got in at 1.78) and am trying to figure out when to get out.

The unions were given a majority stake in the company by Obama. Fiat can’t do anything without their ok. Maybe Fiat figures it can make money in Mexico and then pay the union workers in Detroit not to work and still come out ahead?

Chrysler to Make Fiat in Mexico

It was either that or make Trabants in Zimbabwe. I think Chrysler probably made the right choice.

It seems that 500 cc has a bit more oomph now than it did in the 50’s...:^)

New and Old...

But then, perhaps the fact it grew from two cylinders and 500 cc to 1400 cc with four cylinders might have something to do with the size...:^)

I guess they just liked the "500" name...

(Last December Libya astonished European businessmen by purchasing 10 percent of the shares of Italy’s Fiat motor company for $415 million.) 1977 http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20068482,00.html

Other articles indicate the percentage is now lowered to 2-3 percent.

That photo should be a poster for the obesity epidemic! Look how out of shape and grotesque that new car is. We’ve got to cut back on fattening diets for cars like bigger engines and more room for passengers not to mention all those extra goodies in their diet like power windows, cruise control and air conditioning! ;^)
