Wal-Mart, CVS, Best Buy join Glenn Beck boycott

Mind you, this is a guy who beat Hannity — a show that airs in primetime — in both total viewers and the demo last Friday at 5 p.m. Every last one of these advertisers is simply biding their time, wondering how long they have to wait until nutroots wrath is appeased and they can start advertising on Beck’s show again. I give it six months. Less if Greta gets dumped and GB ends up moved to 10 p.m.

Twenty companies have pulled their ads from Beck’s show in just the last two weeks. The moves come after the Fox News host called President Obama a “racist” who “has a deep-seated hatred for white people” during an appearance on Fox & Friends. Previous companies who pulled their ads include ConAgra, GEICO, Lawyers.com, Men’s Wearhouse, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Roche, SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, and State Farm Insurance.

“We are heartened to see so many corporate citizens step up in support of our campaign against Glenn Beck,” said James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org. “Their action sends a clear a message to Glenn Beck: Broadcasters shouldn’t abuse the privilege they enjoy by spewing dangerous and racially charged hate language over the air. No matter their political affiliation, hate language doesn’t belong in our national dialogue.”

I like Glenn Beck, and he is a remarkably sharp guy who digs into stories more than about anyone else. However, if I were an advertiser, I'd be a little nervous. Beck is goofy, cries constantly, screamed insanely at a caller, and always seems about one judge short of mental hospital. I think saying Obama "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" is way over the line. Even Rush disavowed believing that. I think it's reasonable to say Obama is comfortable with people who hate white people, but he has certainly put a lot of white people in positions of power, more than George Bush did.

Rush, in contrast, is amazingly in control of every syllable he utters. As an advertiser, I'd trust him not to go wacko one day and say something that he'd be apologizing for the next.

Going after Obama for being a Carter-style incompetent liberal who wants to tax and spend while devastating our economy is something that resonates with people because they see it. Going after him as a white-hater just isn't going to work. I want the public to understand what socialism is and why it fails so miserably. Normally Glenn Beck is really good at this, but he needs some self-control.

"how the Hell is Radio Shack still in business?"

I've wondered about this for years. The best I can come up with is US Cellular keeping them alive. All Radio Shack sells in electronics is a bunch of over priced junk.

Here is some background directly from the colorofchange.org who is promoting the boycott you may want to include in any letter you send to the advertisers who lost their gonads after their intestinal fortitude:

ColorOfChange Staff
James Rucker
James Rucker serves as executive director of ColorOfChange.org. Prior, James served as Director of Grassroots Mobilization for MoveOn.org Political Action and Moveon.org Civic Action and was instrumental in developing and executing on fundraising, technology, and campaign strategies. Prior to joining MoveOn, James worked in various roles in the software industry in the San Francisco and has provided coaching and technology consulting for other start-up ventures.

Former Staff
Van Jones (Co-founder, inactive)
While Van hasn't been active in the work of ColorOfChange in recent years, we are proud of where his work las led him. After helping ColorOfChange get started in 2005, Van moved on to other pursuits. In 2007, he founded and served as the executive director of Green For All, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for low-income communities connected to the greater effort of addressing climate change. Van now serves as Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

For what it's worth

Also, Walmart and other big companies don’t want to pay for employee health care anymore.

I often thought about that. I don’t understand it either.
The prices are way out of line. If you plan ahead you can buy online at way less than Radio Shack.

How about that self-control by Jeremiah Wright and the thugs who show up at the town hall meetings and beat up, threaten average American citizens. Glenn has every right to be himself, whether he cry or scream at someone on the phone. It’s his right under the 1st Amendment.

Let’s instead, take issue with these companies who boycott his show and show them some muscle. That door swings both ways.

Let Glenn be Glenn.

No surprise on Progressive--owner is HUGE Dem and supporter. We got Progressive several yrs. ago, but when we found out he supports libs so heavily, never again. Several more of these I never enter. I will have to add the rest to my NO list.
