Why Must We Bow to the Intolerant Ways of Islam?
The Telegraph ^ | 15 Aug 2009 | Alasdair Palmer

Jim Fitzpatrick MP and his wife were quite right to leave a wedding because it was segregated by sex, says Alasdair Palmer.

When Jim Fitzpatrick MP and his wife decided to leave a Muslim wedding party after they discovered it was segregated by sex, he did not anticipate the controversy his decision would generate. "It reflects badly on him," said Sir Iqbal Sacranie, the former head of the Muslim Council of Britain. "It shows a lack of interest… to engage with people of different backgrounds." Tim Archer, the Tory who is standing against the minister of state at the next election, commented that "Fitzpatrick is playing a certain race card to save his skin at the next election". All this because Mr Fitzpatrick did not want to imply that he endorsed sexual segregation by remaining at the party. Yet what can possibly be wrong with an MP, or anyone else, withdrawing from a celebration whose organisation suggests that women are not equal to men?

Jim Fitzpatrick was wrong, but he had a point How The West Was Lost (ctd): the Burkini Some people claim that segregating the sexes is a matter of personal choice, like choosing between flavours of ice-cream. It has no implications in terms of your view of the equality of the sexes, any more than wearing the niqab or the hijab – the Islamic garments that cover women from head to toe – implies that you think women are inferior.

The Muslims who feel most strongly about sexual segregation, or about the importance of ensuring that women dress "modestly", see those customs as ordered by God. They are profoundly offended by the idea that they reflect merely human choices. That is why there is a vocal strain of Islam in Britain that insists that Muslims should be governed,

I wouldn't say anyone should bow to Islam, but I'm not sure this issue is a dividing line. For example, Orthodox synagogues have a partition between the men and the women. Would he leave a synagogue?

I’d have hoped the wedding invitation would point out particulars like this, so that those with convictions about the matter could consider it and then decline or accept. To present guest couples, in a society that generally expects them to stay together at social functions, with the separation at the last moment would be rude to them.

Islam is an anathema to the post-Enlightenment, post-Reformation modern world.

“Why Must We Bow to the Intolerant Ways of Islam?”

Because you are being led by cowards. British politics seem to attract mostly sheep and only an occasional lion.

Tells you that there's no difference between Labour and Conservative.

Daniel Hannan is the only Brit politician I trust.

BS. It indicates a lack of respect from people who are not in their own country to people who are.

You say:
“For example, Orthodox synagogues have a partition between the men and the women. Would he leave a synagogue?”

Well for one reason, Orthdox Jews don’t fly planes into buildings or do honor killings and don’t kill people who don’t believe in their ways.

He knew it wads a Muslim wedding when he went. Thos things you mentioned are wrong, but does that mean everything Muslims do should be banned? Should we ban belief in God because Muslims believe in God? That’s what it will come down to. He knew

Would he leave a synagogue?

My thought exactly. Respecting others customs is simply civil behavior. But it is OK to draw the line at harmful or violent customs, like female genital mutilation or murdering infidels!

re: Why Must We Bow to the Intolerant Ways of Islam?

Or, to put in another way, tolerance is nothing more than being tolerant of the intolerance of those who demand tolerance but are themselves intolerant. There, that should clear things up!
