The Clinging Death
White Fang ^ | Jack London

Posted on 08/18/2009 1:21:17 AM PDT by T.L.Sink

Probably nearly everyone has heard by now of how athlete Michael Vick, just released from prison for engaging in the felonious crime of organizing and profiting from dog fighting, is seeking to rehabilitate himself and return to making big money. Vick not only exercised cruelty but was savagely torturing, beating, and even electrocuting his dogs. We don't have a window into Vick's soul BUT we can learn much about what the mentality and inhumanity of this sort of person really is. No one knew more about dogs, wolves, and canines than Jack London. He LIVED with them and probably understood them better than any other writer. This post is taken from Chaper 4 of "White Fang." Most of you have probably read the novel but it's worth reading again for its insight. Those who havn't read it, or who have forgotten it, will be rewarded greatly.

My son-in-law says he’s uncoachable. His natural talent got him through college but when he got to NFL he needed the extra capability to translate direction into action which is what failed him with the Falcons. Don’t get me wrong, he was acceptable, but not the level he could have been if he could take direction. What will be interesting will be to see if he’s changed.

I thought America was way too smart to elect an inexperienced Chicago “mystery” thug but there ya go.

It was a good read.

The only thing I can think of to stop an attack by a pit bull is to smash the spinal cord.

To inflict death upon something is a very last resort. Torturing something is a scary thing. I can see self-defense, but not what this guy did, just do not understand the mentality that would do something like this.

Jack London was a committed communist. Read The Sea Wolf to get an idea of his politics.

You may be right. I don’t know much about pit bulls except that some breeders say they’ve been “overbred” deliberately to bring out their most ferocious and vicious traits. By the way, when I was about ten I had a type of pit bull for a pet and didn’t even know it. A lady in our neighborhood was a breeder and she gave me a Staffordshire Terrier. It was a terriic and lovable dog. I only learned years later that the “Amstaff” was an American version of the pit bull. That was long before all the bad notoriety for pit bulls became so well publicized.
