Miley Cyrus and Trampy Teen Idols
Townhall.com ^ | August 18, 2009 | Rebecca Hagelin

Posted on 08/18/2009 8:55:10 AM PDT by Kaslin

Moms everywhere are aghast at teen idol Miley Cyrus' recent pole dancing and exaltation of Britney Spears as her hero.

The "Hannah Montana" superstar morphed overnight from a bubbly starlet into just another trashy singer, leaving moms feeling betrayed. Many thought they had finally found a " Hollywood type" their daughters could look up to. I visited a friend last year and marveled at the wall-to-wall posters of Hannah Montana that adorned her ten-year-old daughter's room. Like millions of other little girls, Hannah was her hero. From her clothes, music, and dance moves to her hairstyle, this little girl (and her mom) were really "into" Hannah.

Then came the photo of Miley sprawled across a boy, her bright green bra in clear view. Next, the 15-year-old posed in nothing but a sheet for the cover of Vanity Fair. After a public outcry, the teen and her superstar dad Billy Ray apologized saying they had been tricked by the photographer. Right. The sorrow only came when parents protested en masse. Given that moms are desperate for role models for their daughters, we quickly forgave, only to be let down again this week when Miley pole danced her way as the heir apparent of the cute-girl-gone-trashy super star phenomenon. Left in her wake? Millions of pre-teen girls who are left thinking they have to be sex objects to "make it" in life.

Face the facts: There is a pattern here and it will not change as long as we don't recognize that our little girls are being used.

The mass marketers of Hollywood hype know that today's youth spend some 200 billion dollars a year of their own money on trinkets, music and all the accessories that go with it. They also know that pre-teen girls are easily manipulated and that more than anything else, want to be popular as they grow into young adults. So, they discover cute, talented young girls, make them superstars by playing on your daughter's dreams of glitz, and morph the "wholesome" starlets into trampy sex stars as they grow older, hoping to take the dollars of your girls with them. They aren’t just turning the star into a tramp; their goal is to take your daughter too.

The transition happens at lightning speed - after all, there are only four years between the innocence of 12 and the sultriness needed by 16 to keep the big bucks flowing. History repeats itself. You know what happened to teen idol Britney Spears. America's little girls and their moms swooned and spent millions on Britney fashions. However, just as the Britney wannabes reached critical mass, the star's light started to short circuit. Her sexy ways quickly turned into bizarre behavior, drug problems and a raunchy attitude.

Not to worry, High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens was there to take her place. But just as Vanessa hit her zenith in the eyes of our little girls, nude photos and other sexual revelations about her captured the headlines. Down came Vanessa and up went the posters of the twinkling, sparkly Miley Cyrus.

Now Miley has made the transition to tramp too. And millions of preteen girls have, once again, been manipulated into believing that being trampy is not only normal, but is the only way to succeed.

It's time for moms to wake up and protect our little girls from being used. Find other moms who are sick of the abuse - it only takes a few friends to create your own sub-culture within the madness of the crazy pop culture. Finding allies is one of the most effective ways to fight back and win.

The pole dance is seriously overrated.

It was not a pole dance. Some people are such prudes, and I am pretty darn conservative.

Seems a lot like the South Park Jonas Brothers episode in regards to marketers manipulating parents’ wishes for wholesome entertainment performers for their children by thinly selling sex to kids.

Why would a parent hope for of expect a “role model” (whatever that is) from along the likes of all the names mentioned?

Why?

I saw it on O'Reilly. Agreed.

It was not the most tasteful skit, but she was just holding on to the thing so she didn't fall.

Many thought they had finally found a - down - their daughters could look - up - to.

And they wonder why they're disappointed? Sounds like these "moms" need to grow up.

Disney has changed the marketing strategy behind Miley, that’s all.

“Moms everywhere are aghast” is part of the campaign to sell to a slightly older crowd, the type that does not wish to be seen with Mom when shopping.

The “pole dance” was not a pole dance, but endless repetition makes it seem so.

It’s synthetic culture to make big bucks, and there are billions at stake here.

Except for one part where she wiggled her butt close to the ground. It was kind of innocent, but still suggestive. They were pushing the envelope a bit.

Just keep ‘em away from the garbage. No tv will go a long way to fixing the problem, but parents have to be willing to give up tv themselves and most won’t do that.

They showed it on FOX. She was singing on top of an ice cream cart and holding on to the umbrella pole.

(Looks for illustration on Google images)

Wel, ....ummmm.... that's a little bit more than FOX showed.

Maybe it was a little bit over the top for a 16 year old.

Many parents these days feel assaulted with all the sexual inuendo carp from Hollyweird. Even if one thinks Miley Cyrus little suggestive dance was no big deal many are sick of anything connecting kids with trampy slut behaviors.
Can’t blame them one bit.

I have not given up hope, that she will not be destroyed by the experience of Disney teen stardom that seems to leave so many of them hopelessly adrift. I think it comes down to family and there remains the question of just how much they have given her strength as opposed to letting her be simply used. If she triumphs over this and ends up leading a decent life she might be a role model yet, for most teens go through a struggle of identity. Perhaps some time in the military, in the future, where everybody is equal might do her some good. I never see any of these little Disney kids do that and it would be a great example.

I think Miley is a great example to my daughters. I have talked to them many times about why fame is not worth pursuing. The same people who build you up will turn on you and destroy you. You are just a prop that sells their merchandise. They don't care what kind of publicity you get as long as they can use you to bring in money. Once you no longer are of interest, you are throw on the pile with all the other "has beens".

Miley's 15 minutes are about up. Who is next?

Excellent article.

While the pole dance might not be the worst, Miley's Vanity Fair cover was over the top. What parent would let their young daughter pose for something like that? Britney Spears and Vanessa Hudgens have morphed into tramps.

As Hagelin observes: "They aren't just turning the star into a trampy figure; their goal is to take your daughter with them."

Unfortunately, 12 years old is not so innocent anymore

Second of all, if my 11 yr old and her friends are any indication- Hannah Montana is so “over”. The girls still buying Hannah Montana shirts etc are more like 8 - or younger. Miley Cyrus? Still mild interest but even my daughter now says “Miley is not a good role model”.

Her skit may not have been a "pole dance" (I think it was intended to mimic one) but it was suggestive and embarrassing for me, a Mom to watch that girl shimmy down that thang wearing hot pants. Yuck. Billy Ray- what are you thinking? You must be as dumb as the hicks you portray.

DD age 11 is now into Demi Lovado and Selena Gomez. Cute girls but next I'm waiting for the scandal to emerge about them

Miley is already beginning the Dana Plato/Kristi Swanson/Lindsay Lohan downhill slide of teen idols: First drug abuse and promiscuity. Then failed rehab. Then nude photos, then a felony arrest, and finally suicide or a violent end.

She became the train wreck that is Brittney Spears.

Disney takes 13-14 year olds from wholesome to trashy to make a buck.

Can’t blame them one bit.

I don't blame them at all. It's just that getting fixated on a particular personality instead of understanding the massive marketing machine behind them is too naive to be acceptable for our time, unfortunately. Girls especially need to be taught from the earliest possible age about this "cultural" atrocity that will be forever eating away at the edges of their dignity. Miley Cyrus could actually be used as a learning tool in this way, to show girls what will happen to those who give in to the glamour without understanding what it takes from them in return.

I wouldn’t allow my kids to watch television. In my house the TV isn’t connected to cable or even the networks. Only DVDs and (yes) the X-Box. If you have cable, you’re wasting time that could be spent doing a lot of other things. And it’s dangerous for kids.

Role model ??? ...Parents should turn off the TV and open some books. How about Florence Nightengale, George S. Patton (that’s right, can’t teen girls admire men?), Emma Sansom, Davy Crockett, Shirley Temple, and Sarah Palin?

Teens should be taught to admire good adults of both sexes and all ages. Why should much be expected of teen pop singers? It is not a very high calling.

These kids reach a point as they mature where they have to either abandon the schtick that got their earnings into the statosphere or their earnings will decline. Handlers are trying to move her on up to another age bracket slowly so it won’t be noticed. Apparently some are noticing.

I hope she doesn’t go the way of the others, but so far it’s not encouraging. Crunch time will come in a couple of years when she can do what she wants independently.

She never was a good row model. I’m not judging anyone’s parenting decisions here, but I find it funny that we have a thread full of people complaining about Cyrus and Disney whoring her, but parents, whose wallets are the only reason why Disney do any of this, just explain that it’s ok, THEIR kids are over it.

Weird world we live in... Row models that made “their proofs” are a dime a dozen, why let kid choose one of the manufacturerd one?

Kip Kendall: So, what do you say to all the concerned parents out there?Melissa Cherry: Well Kip, I honestly don't understand what all of the fuss is about. My music isn't about sex. It's about being a girl, and having fun!
Kip Kendall: But clearly the song "Down On My Knees", Melissa, is about ******** isn't it?
Melissa Cherry: Ewww! It's about, how, like when you have a big crush on a boy, sometimes you get down on your knees and, like, beg for their love.
Kip Kendall: What about your first big hit, "Take Me From Behind"?
Melissa Cherry: "Take Me From Behind" isn't sexual at all. It's about love sneaking up on you, you know, like from the behind. It could be a boyfriend's love sneaking up on you, or a friend's...or even Jesus Christ.
Kip Kendall: Let's talk about the song "Lollipop Love".
Melissa Cherry: "Lollipop Love" is the kind of love that is just really sweet and you just kinda want to lick it, you know? And suck it. Like a lollipop!
Kip Kendall: What about the song "Shoot Your Love All Over Me"?
Melissa Cherry: It's about, like, when you're in love, you just want to be covered in it.
Kip Kendall: Clearly the video seems to tell a different story.
Melissa Cherry: What kind is that?
Kip Kendall: The kind with a *******.
Melissa Cherry: I'm a virgin! How would I know what a ****** is? Sometimes I like dressing up sexy in my videos, but that's just my way of celebrating being a woman! You know, people are always going to try and tear you down. But that's their problem, not mine, because I know who Melissa Cherry is. She's just a good old fashioned country girl from Monroe, Tennessee.

Too bad no one ever tries the "good musician" route. You know, study, develop your craft. But, that doesn't produce the instant bucks. Jewel started at 15, but actually learned music, and has become quite a singer-songwriter. She was encouraged to develop her talent rather than her sex appeal.

I can’t think of any other time I’ve seen someone gyrate around a hot dog stand umbrella, so it’s pretty clear to me they were evoking a pole dance, i.e., I’m not buying into any “coincidence” here.

Regardless, those who think this is no big deal need to consider her audience - who are mostly tweens and pre-pubescent girls. Is she dressed like a skank? Yep. Should it matter since she’s 16 years old now and not a little girl? Well, back to the audience factor. Would it be okay if Mr. Rogers had hosted his show in chaps and a leather vest? He’s an adult right? Oh, but the audience....
