While I agree with the comments here, I suspect that the real reason Edwards is doing ALL of this is to try, desperately, to hold off the grand jury that is apparently getting ready to drop a bomb on Edwards.
So — moving the mistress in buys her silence.
It also tries to confuse the grand jury by implying that, by taking these actions, Edwards is “taking responsibility” and therefore the impending criminal charges should be considered ‘in that light’. After all, the criminal acts were all about hiding the relationship, and now Edwards is putting it all in the open, so ‘no harm, no foul’.
In other words, this is ALL ABOUT the criminal charges — Edwards is trying to get out in front of, and also influence, the charges.
I'm not entirely familiar with the complexities of the Federal Elections laws, but I've spoken to some law school friends that have described a situation in which Ewdards in some serious peril of significant jail time - think years, not months.
What's curious about this is that Ms Hunter has already testified to the Grand Jury. Now, perhaps what she said was well rehearsed with the Edwards legal team, and this is the payback for being a a loyal soldier. I have a feeling, however, that the government has already built a fairly solid case irrespective of whatever Ms. Hunter testified to. I don't think Edwards, and his army of hair care specialists, is going to walk from this unscathed.

So, you just never can tell. The poor baby could grow up to save Western civilization, for all we know.
There’s a movie studio in Wilmington — Screen Gems I think, big place — want to bet the notorious videographer, Rielle, gets a great job there?
And I hope to gosh they both didn't just say her cancer was terminal to gander sympathy during the campaign.
