Commentary: Slavery needs more than an apology
CNN ^ | 8/19/09 | Katrina Brown

Posted on 08/19/2009 1:41:38 PM PDT by pissant

The Senate voted to apologize for slavery on June 18. The House apologized last summer. The first family -- descendants of Africans, of enslaved Africans and of slave-holders -- visited a slave fort in Ghana.

These were historic occasions, and they occasioned the kind of hue and cry that always accompany the subject of slavery and whether we still need to reckon with it.

I believe we do need more reckoning, and a little more love and a little more logic would help that process.

Logic first: There's this quasi-math problem in which things don't add up. Many African-Americans naturally feel as if there is unfinished business from the past, while many European-Americans (and others) don't think they should inherit burdens from a past not of their making. So there's this generational equation to be worked out, and it will take big hearts, eager hearts, to do so.

The calculation is a bit easier for me at first glance. I'm the seventh-generation descendant of the worst slave traders in American history. I found out from my grandmother when she was 88 and I was 28, a few years before she died.

Hey, toots, did you visit the African tribes that captured their "brothers" and sold them to whitey. Or how about the Arabs who made a mint in the slave trade. Of course, the Romans, the Greeks, the Ottomans, the Africans, the Native North and Central and South Americans, the Norsemen, the Chinese, the Japanese all had slavery too.

Not to be too blunt, lady, but you can suck your apology out of my you-know-what.

Slavery got way more than an apology. Anyone with a modicum of knowledge of history knows that. The idea that in 2009 something needs to be done about slavery is ludicrous.

Hey Katrina, anyone living now who was a slave before, during, and to the last day of the Civil War can receive reparations. No one else. Just because YOU'VE bought into the White Guilt horsesh** doesn't mean we all need to pay for it.

I had a G- and a G-G grandfather who spent 4 and 3 years, respectively, in the Union Army, chasing the Confederates for thousands of miles around the South. There were millions of men just like them.

I'd say my family's dues have been paid in full.

The debt was paid in full in 1865 with 600,000 lives North and South.
And then paid again with social welfare programs from the 1930’s until the present day.

Some people need to shut up, quit whining, and get their butts to work.

“Slavery needs more than an apology”

####

Well both sides of MY family were still a part of the abused European peasant class during the American slavery era, but if this race pig wants it bad enough, I guess I could slit open my leg and let it bleed all over the floor for an hour or so.

I’m guessing whitey blood ain’t near as good as an unending stream of cold hard cash.

Reparations in the trillions, of course, have ALREADY been well underway since the 1960’s.

To the minority, all this is about is compensation beyond food stamps and public housing and medicade for the kids of single, unmarried mothers.

What the hell do they want me to give them??? The key to my house?? My car keys??? F em.

360,000+ Union soldiers were casualties so that slavery would die in 1865. Just what do you want to extract from them? After all, if Democrats can raise people from the dead to vote, why can’t they do so to pay reparations?

My ancestors arrived in America in 1854 and settled in Chicago. They were German immigrants. They had nothing to do with slavery. Nothing! I owe Blacks nothing. I will pay nothing. Those Blacks who tout this line are the racists who are in it for the money and nothing else. Those Whites who agree are fools who can’t get over their own inbred insecurities. Neither group is worth my time.

Did I miss the part where Katrina Brown said that she would find some descendents of slaves and share half of her income with them? Her self-described “sense of entitlement” tells us all we need to know about her. She seems to assume (wrongly) that all white people share this. What an elitist!

In my opinion... all those "stuck" on slavery can stick it where the sun don't shine...

My belief is that some folks just wake up every day and pray that they can accuse someone of "racism." It is the only way they can validate themselves instead of learning something new and productive...

They also need to get over it. But they won’t if they think they can get some free money. That’s what it’s all about. Most people don’t give a dam about the slavery issue. They just want the money. Then watch and see who gets the kickbacks.

Actually, my mother-in-law was a foundling in New York City early in the 20th century. She was indentured to a BLACK woman from Memphis, TN. She was supposed to get $200 and a Bible at age 18, and be released (the first two didn’t happen, the third occurred on the woman’s death). My wife wants to know when she will get her reparations....

Yes, let’s do something about slavery! Let’s end it: End the income tax, end Medicare, end Social Security, and end all other forms of socialism. Because that’s what socialism is: slavery. It enslaves those who are productive (and willing to work) for the benefit of those who are not.

So Katrina, that several TRILLION dollars which have been redistributed from working whites to non-working blacks—isn’t that at least PARTIAL PAYMENT for the building of America you say the slaves did??!! And the 50%+ crime rate caused by 13% of the population, are whites permitted to bitch just a little about that?? And exactly how many blacks living in the US are hustling to move back to the idyllic hills and dales of Africa? Maybe some would like to THANK their ancestors for being here? Just a few notions which I’m SURE will make your next literary endeavor!

It's natural for me to feel a particular burden. I wasn't the perpetrator, I didn't inherit money from the slave trade, but I gained so much through the accident of birth: material comfort, education, access, a sense of entitlement.

At the risk of upsetting your moral calculus let me ask the Ms. Browne if she did a survey of the political & economic freedom of West Africans vs. African Americans? Which group, on balance, lives better? Get my drift?

The US received 5% of the slave trade.

Their descendants are legion, and among the most well-fed people on earth.

The 95% of the slaves who went to other countries did not fare nearly as well.

Why don't we care about them?

"Meanwhile, many African-Americans are upset about the disparate outcomes that persist and want to see everyone step up to address them. There are so many lingering "structural inequalities," as President Obama put it -- ones without clear racist villains but that are embedded, like the fact that schools are funded with property taxes, so poor black neighborhoods, the legacy of earlier eras of discrimination, are not able to fund the quality schools that we say all our children deserve."

Miss Katrina: You are aware that there's a federal Department of Education, right? That the federal government funds local education? Ever heard of "No Child Left Behind" which is a federal mandate? Also, you're saying that black neighborhoods are "poor" because of past discrimination? Why is it that when I visit Asian neighborhoods, it looks like a Mercedes or Lexus dealership? That when I go into Hispanic areas I see hundreds of nice pickup trucks, many used in businesses? That dog won't hunt.

Sorry, I stopped reading when Katrina Browne appealed to logic and started with “quasi-math problem in which things don’t add up” and end up with a “generational equation that needs to be worked out.”

My mind spins at her illogical pandering. She is hyping her little docudrama.

She is more than welcome to empty her bank account containing all inheritances from her perceived ill-begotten gains of her ancestors and send it to the first slave she sees on the sidewalk to help assuage her guilt, but I don’t want (any more) of my tax money to do the same via the heavy hand of socialism.
