JC Penney caper [in Louisiana] nets $1.5 million
The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune ^ | August 20, 2009 | Jeff Adelson

Posted on 08/20/2009 6:11:00 AM PDT by rrstar96

Carrying out a heist that could have been scripted in Hollywood, two men scaled the JC Penney store near Covington under the cover of darkness early Sunday.

They cut a hole in the building's roof, descended into the store using ropes and, somewhere along the way, disabled the security system, paving the way for them to browse the darkened store and stuff plastic garbage bags with jewelry, clothing and other goods.

After an hour in the store, the burglars disappeared through a fire door, taking with them more than $1.5 million in goods and pulling off what authorities called the largest burglary in St. Tammany Parish history.

These guys are familiar with the security system.

Probably used to make $10 an hour installing them.

The rest is cake.

James Bond would never wear clothes sold at JC Penney. I would rather buy clothes from Marks and Sparks than JC Penney.

However, whenever I am in London, I love Selfridges. No, I am not a Homo or Metro sexual.

The name of the Parish is certainly appropriate for this thieving to take place.

plastic garbage bags

How many plastic garbage bags does it take to accumulate $1.5 million worth of goods at a JC Penney store? And they did it all in an hour? Did they use a 18 wheeler to haul it off in?

Makes one wonder if there isn't another motive behind this heist such as mgmt mismanagement/theft, etc.

My wife has shopped at that store. For a JCP, it’s a relatively small store. She thinks that they would have had to empty the whole place to get $1.5 million.

They mentioned jewelry, some stores have little jewelry departments with wedding sets and such. If they broke into that, then they could get a haul pretty quickly. Otherwise, at $15 an item, it would take a semi load to get that kind of money.

The Penney store I worked over Christmas in Jewelry would lock all the diamond jewelry in safes overnight. Watches, silver and other jewelry was left in the cases. Many of the watches is around $300 plus retail. The gold and silver chains could easily cost $1000+ each.
