U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul of Kentucky is reaping an online fundraising bonanza today, as a money bomb for his campaign efforts exploded from supporters of his father's 2008 presidential campaign.
Organized by music promoter Trevor Lyman, the man who organized multimillion-dollar online fundraising efforts for the 2008 Ron Paul for President campaign, the campaign hopes to raise as much as $1 million during the day. Rand Paul is running as a Republican for the open U.S. Senate seat in Kentucky being vacated by retiring Republican Senator Jim Bunning.
The official Rand Paul for Senate website, http://www.RandPaul2010.com, reported as of 8:00 a.m. Eastern that the campaign had taken in about $100,000 in Internet donations overnight, bringing the campaign's total war chest to more than $300,000.
A first-time candidate, Rand Paul has already polled better than expected against GOP primary opponent Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson. The Louisville ABC television affiliate reported that so far, Grayson leads 37% to 26% despite the 11 point lead, that's a strong early showing for the relatively unknown eye doctor. Rand Paul is an ophthalmologist.
August 20 was selected as the date for the money bomb because it is the 74th birthday of his father, Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas), the 2008 GOP presidential candidate.

Some people here complain about Ron Paul and by extension his son Rand Paul.
I just want to say this, “100 Ron/Rand Pauls are heck of a lot better by a factor of one million than 1 Arlen Specter or Lindsey Grahmnesty.”
you cannot be more right.

I like much of what Ron Paul says, but not everything. I don’t know a thing about his son, but I am curious, did he name her for Ayn Rand?
I think that is a common misconception because Paul has said he didn't like Ayn and Ayn always had a deep dislike for Libertarians (I think they crossed once in his early career..) Also, although that Atlas was published in 57, it didn't really take off until the late 60s, Rand Paul was born in '63. His name also seems to fit a pattern of family names (his brother is named Randy) "Rand" is a nicnkame for Randal (his legal name).. I would venture to bet more that he may have given himself that nickname.
his wife gave him the name!
bttt
Well, that sure does put the nickname well after he was born. :->
As you know, I've been one of the biggest critics of Ron here, however, I also don't believe in judging a son by his father, Randal is his own man and I look forward to seeing where he stands and if he has any differences with his dad (for better or worse). I hope he steers very clear of the Lew Rockwell machine that corrupts his father.
Ah, thanks for explaining. Heck, I didn’t even know Ron Paul had kids. Not that I thought he didn’t, I just never gave it a thought. My son is a big R. Paul supporter. Drives me crazy! :)
The reason for this is that Rand believed that freedom trumps liberty, and the libertarians believe the opposite. She and Piekoff went through painstaking logical deductions to arrive at that stance.
I like Rand, I’ve seen him on tv several times. He recently floated a great idea with respect to healthcare reform, give doctors credible tax breaks to treat the poor and unisured for free. I’m sure Bambi, Nancy and Harry will ignore it.
Rand will be an excellent senator for KY. He will replace Sen. Bunning, who is retiring with a very conservative voting record. Dr. Paul launches today from an enviable position; he is a relative unknown, but is only 11 points behind the leader this early in the race. He is the only serious candidate running who is not a party hack.
Unfortunately, there are people here in KY who say we should stick with the party template, because we need a candidate who “...can win...”. Some of us Kentuckians who pushed for the more liberal presidential candidates over the last two years seem to have not learned anything from the ass whipping we (and the U.S. Constitution) have sustained.
Rand is NOT a Lindsay Graham, Charles Grassley, or John McCain. He is exactly what KY and America need, right now!
I am curious as to what that means. It evokes nothing as it stands. Obviously you have to tightly define both words to get to a result.

I hope KY Republicans wise up. In 1994, while Rand Paul was founding Kentucky Taxpayers United, Trey Grayson was an active Clinton supporter.
BINGO!! As much as I disagree with him on foreign policy..his political views as a whole are the most consistent with those of the Founding Fathers, including foreign policy,of any Congressman.
...Unlike other critics of Ron Paul, you have rational and reasoned aurguements backed up with fact. Although I dis-agree with you on some issues, as I do with Ron Paul, and others on FR, you have my utmost respect. Good on yer...
...Rand will probably be alot like his father, but, as you said, we will see what he does. He has my vote for sure...
Most of the younger generation who are at all attracted to Republican ideas are attracted by Ron Paul, not by the current assortment of RINOs, neocons and social conservatives. It's to be expected.
I suppose.
Could be worse — he could be a long-haired anti-American hippie doing drugs. Instead, he’s someone who believes in the Constitution and personal responsibility. Take a bow, because you did a real good job raising him! ;)
As of the time of this posting, Rand Paul has raised $691, 538 from the Money Bomb!

(Accidentally addressed it to myself the first time)
LOL to the addressing it to yourself.
Yeah, he’s a good kid (heck, he’s hardly a kid anymore). I love him.
Yeah well, I was trying to consolidate the quotes so that it would have some continuity in case there were others posting to the thread in between-- and then went, "What the heck".
One of my "duh" moments -- at least I wasn't driving when it happened. ;)
