From the right to bare arms to the right to bare legs: Michelle Obama caught short over her shorts
Daily Mail ^

There's a lot of important issues facing America at the moment.

The biggest issue, judging by the amount of noise, is the fact the First Lady made the un-president-ed step of wearing shorts on vacations.

However, no-one seems to be making practical suggestions for what Michelle Obama should have worn on a hike through the hot, dusty Grand Canyon. Short trip: Michelle steps off the plane, protected by some formally-clad, and presumably baking, guards

In an outcry which (almost) overshadows the the debate over the U.S. healthcare system, critics came out en masse to condemn Michelle's choice of clothing.

A search for 'Michelle Obama shorts' became one of Google New's hot topics, with various headlines proclaiming the shorts to be 'hideous'.

However, there were many voices ready to defend the First Lady.

One commentator for the LA Times wrote: 'Think about this for a minute. What should she have worn to the Grand Canyon? A tweed pantsuit? A ballgown? What do you wear on your summer vacation?

Instead, she got off that plane looking like she’d just come in from working in the garden.

So, what does she wear while working in the new garden at the WH?

She looks fine.

You're right. What does the UK know about clothes for summer? They don't know anything about sunshine wear.

I tend to agree with you except....

...if we see someone in our surround dressed liked this, we’d likely shrug. It is the attire of summer after all.

BUT...she is the First Lady and this was not an unexpected photo op.

Understand that it’s no big deal but still most women, and this is a women thing here, would not dress so...drab?...here knowing that they would be the object of many photographs. Disembarking from a plane on a hallmark event of the presidential vacation?

Most women would not pull their hair back like that in such an ugly way, most women would probably have put on a pair of pedal pusher types...most women would have just looked better than this what with being First Lady and knowing a photo op was about to happen.

Mostly it’s a commentary on Michelle and her sometimes whacky planning ability. She’s got millions of dollars worth of help and for sure you’d never see Laura Bush dressed like that knowing a photo op was upon.

Jacki was pilloried over a pair of peach capris she wore on the beach at Hyannis. The press had a fit over her informality.

That said, Michelle does represent the people of the US and she is supposed to be beautifully turned out every time.

Really, someone needs to take her aside and give her a hint. Telling her she is a fashion icon when her clothes are pedestrian at best is giving her a false sense of her own ability to choose appropriate wear.

The First Lady is The First Lady and her clothes must reflect it.

Bingo! You summed up what I was trying to say in my lengthier, and not better, comment upthread a bit.

Michelle? Get her hands dirty?

Probably a big shady hat and something completely inappropriate. That is, after all, apparently her hallmark.

I’m sure she has had numerous “hints”. She is going to do what she is going to do, at heart, once again, it appears to be basic disrespect for the position and for America.

Thankfully, I live in an area where no one appears in public looking so slovenly.

So much for all the hyperventilating over Michelle being the newest fashion icon for the world.

The world of the lazy and sloppy perhaps?

Precisely.

There was a story earlier this week about how many high-paid attendants Michelle has. Can’t someone tell her how tacky she often looks? Is she so arrogant that she won’t listen? Are they afraid of her? Or does no one in that White House have good taste?

It’s like having Ma and Pa Kettle with less class.

lol. I know many girls and women of all ages and races and economic ranges, and none of them, repeat none, go out in public without spending 2-4 hours combing their hair, etc. If any of them were stepping off Air Force One to the photographers they’d look their best in whatever they had available to them

“She’s not the only one................”

Some of us grow older gracefully and others see themselves 20 years ago and don’t move on. I suppose it’s a matter of maturity as well as reality. I hope this wisdom doesn’t offend you too.

She probably should have worn something different off the plane and then changed into shorts after she arrived at tourist destination. Still, I think it’s much ado about little.

Those aren’t bootie shorts or anything. Just plain old shorts.

It’s August!

I can find many ideological (and even some fashion things to mock) problems with Michelle, but these shorts just ain’t it for me.

That said, Michelle does represent the people of the US and she is supposed to be beautifully turned out every time.

No, she is merely married to the president. She has not been elected to represent the people of the U.S. or anyone else. She is not a princess or a queen, we don't have royalty anymore. She has absolutely no responsibility to "be beautifully turned out every time". We do not need more phoniness in the Whitehouse. She looked just fine in shorts for hiking.

The pretentiousness and gratuitous hate on this forum is getting pathetic. Our elected leaders are leading us down the path of ruin and we should be concerned about what someone who is not an elected leader wears when hiking?

I bet you really enjoy watching your recordings of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars.
