Energy Policy: New York's governor wants to tap into a shale formation that can supply the entire U.S. with natural gas for 65 years. Will NIMBY environmentalists let him stimulate New York's and America's energy economy? Last week, David Patterson released a draft report of his Energy Planning Board that does something Democrats are loath to do: It proposes developing a domestic energy resource the huge amounts of natural gas trapped in the Marcellus Shale formation. New York produces 5% of its natural gas in-state and imports more than 95% from the Gulf Coast and Canada. The Marcellus Shale stretches from southwestern New York to Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. A nearby formation of Devonian shale is even more porous, with a superior amount of trapped gas per volume of rock. Geologist Gary Lash of State University New York at Fredonia and colleague Terry Engelder of Penn State estimate that Marcellus holds 1,300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. About 20 trillion cubic feet are produced in the U.S. annually.

Even if NY doesn’t drill there are states that will. That’s a huge formation. A note of caution though. The Haynesville shale in La and Tex has been found to have a depletion rate so high that it appears to be economically unfeasible to drill there.
The Haynesville shale is a similar formation with gas trapped in shale formations. Drilling has been going on there for a few years with high hopes but the trapped gas depletes too fast for the wells to produce enough to cover the cost of drilling. Haynesville wasn’t mentioned in the article. I brought it up.
Many of these unconventoional reservoirs will not be produced without the frac job, and the apparent goal is to stop that, claiming danger to fresh water aquifers.
With the Bakken, the aquifers are usually somewhere on the order of 9500 ft. above the casing shoe, and in no danger of contamination by the frac.
States and the Federal Government will kill two stones with opening up drilling. ( see California and New York) two extreme environmentalist states)
They're drilling like there's no tomorrow in W PA right now.
Of course, the Obamites and other liberals are doing all they can to remedy that, because it is difficult to manipulate a Statehouse or a population that isn't needy.
In North Dakota, too. The EPA is not in control under the Clean Water Act, yet. Better make hay while the sun shines...
Thanks for the info. I just ran across the frac act while looking up some info on the Haynesville shale. From what I read it looks like it’s being watered down somewhat but I don’t know enough about it to figure out if it will stop the drilling in these new shale formations. It seems the govt hasn’t met an energy source it likes with the exception of solar and wind which are totally useless.
I hope Pennsylvania slant drills every cubic foot of gas under New York, go get it. (I know it’s not possible, but it would be fun)
In SE Ohio I recently leased the gas rights to an Ohio company. I get a nice annual check until they start drilling and then I get free gas and a nice monthly royalty. That monthly check should be about $500 but could be as much as $3000. Not bad for 130 acres of trees and hay fields.
Bank as much as you can. Sometimes the wells deplete rapidly, and the income with them.
I hope that is not the case for you, but if you stash the cash and do not rely on it as income, you will fare better in the long run.
What a shocker!
Another member of America's most self absorbed dysfunctional family objects to something that is good for America.
In our entire history is there any other clan of arrogant, short sighted, know-it-all meddlers that has done more to promote and elevate themselves on the back of America than the Kennedys?
How many of them are there anyway? They are like an infestation of termites, multiplying exponentially and working around the clock to destroy the very structure that gives them sustenance.
The only purpose of the Warmist hoax is to steal your money.
