Catching Up to Mexico - Illegal immigration is depleting California's human capital ...
National Review (print) ^ | August 24, 2009 | Alex Alexiev

Posted on 08/22/2009 6:01:45 AM PDT by reaganaut1

California's financial unraveling has prompted a long-overdue debate about taxes, regulation, and government spending, but the state's media and government continue to ignore what could be an even greater problem: the irreparable damage to California's human capital that nearly 30 years of unrestrained illegal immigration has achieved.

This is not an immigration problem, or even an illegal-immigration problem, per se. A strong case could be made that, in terms of educational achievement, industriousness, and entrepreneurial acumen, Asian immigrants to California have proven superior to white natives of the state. Therefore, if California were to experience a wave of mass immigration from Asia, its long-term economic prospects would be improved. Today's Hispanic immigrants would probably have the same effect if they came from the top 10 to 20 percent of their society -- according to those same measures of human capital -- rather than from its bottom rungs. But the influx has instead been composed mainly of the poorly educated, the unskilled, and the illiterate. Such immigrants will likely soon dominate the state's overall population and politics.

In 2005, the California K-12 school system was 48.5 percent Hispanic, compared with 30.9 percent white. By now it is above 50 percent Hispanic. Two-thirds of kindergarten students were Hispanic, most of them unable to speak English.

For a closer glimpse of what's in store for California, look at the Los Angeles Unified School District, the largest in California and the second largest in the country. Of its roughly 700,000 students, almost three-quarters are Hispanic, 8.9 percent are white, and 11.2 percent are black. More than half of the Latino students (about 300,000) are "English learners" and, depending on whether you believe the district or independent scholars, anywhere between a third and a half drop out of high school ...

The unchecked illegal invasion displaces American workers and weakens the sovereignty of the nation.

Those who ignore it don’t think it will affect them and those who promote it profit from it somehow.

Yes it does. There is a legal immigration process and that is what must be followed.

We’re in an unprecedented financial crisis and bleeding jobs to boot.

This is a deconstruction of the U.S.A. and a good portion of it is deliberate.

When will more of America wake up? Not until a good portion of them are out on the street wondering how they got there.

The limousine liberals already live in idyllic enclaves.

The left wing elites want to have large staffs of smiling brown servants.

Their distaste for American employees was one reason they encourage illegal immigration.

Gee, who would EVER have guessed that allowing millions and millions of illiterate, unskilled, non-English-speaking peasant breeders (many of whom are unfamiliar with the concept of indoor plumbing) to settle in your state would have a negative impact on the economy, not to mention the public education system? California has been ruined, sucked dry by parasites. It is now a poor Mexican state. Shame on those who allowed this to happen, and may they rot in hell.

It’s far to late for California. The Libs that ran the state into the ground are now the ones moving out of California to states such as Nevada and Texas. Libs are like Cancer Cells. They move to these states and right away start trying to destroy the state they moved too.Florida is another good example of Lib destruction. The hispanic influx has ruined South Florida the same way they are ruining California. Now they are migrating north. We too shall soon be over run.Don’t ya just love diversity ?

I'll remind you and others on this thread that control of immigration is a FEDERAL responsibility. The CA voter-approved attempt to stem the illegal flow by cutting off welfare and other government freebies for illegals (Proposition 187), was nullified by a FEDERAL judge.

Anyone who can count could see the demographic handwriting on the wall. But Democrats are intent upon buying votes and deconstructing traditional America by any means necessary. And large corporate employers have been concerned only with lowering payroll costs by hiring illegals. Thanks to Ted Kennedy, George W. Bush and other myopic D.C. politicians, the same barbaric mess will be coming to your states soon.

I agree with you entirely, except to say that California politicians are to a certain degree culpable, as well, if for no other reason than their consistent pandering. You left out Clinton and Algore’s Citizenship USA that gave citizenship to those 1.2 million former illegals, most of whom were “Califronians” so they could vote, without bothering to determine whether they had criminal records. The person who presided over that one, Doris Meissner, is BO’s “senior advisor” on immigration reform.

This is not an immigration problem, or even an illegal-immigration problem, per se

At first glance, that statement made my blood boil. Of course, it's an immigration problem and it was created by the traitors in control of our country.

Alex Alexiev's timid report on the termites gnawing away at our Culture, our Wealth and our Well-Being is just more useless blather.

Until these genius sycophants at National Review and throughout the media, start laying the blame and naming the names of the scurrilous low lifes who are destroying this once great bastion of freedom and explaining in detail how the two party's have worked together to bring us to this precipice of darkness, they should be considered part of the problem.

I don't need some phoney ass intellectual to tell me something that everyone who has been directly affected by has known for more than a decade.

You're trying to pick fly specks out of the pepper. Certainly CA politicians have been in this up to their necks, pandering to their increasingly Hispanic constituents -- thanks to the Feds' failure to enforce the law! If the Feds (ably assisted by Democrat Gov. Gray Davis) had allowed Prop 187 to stand, the flow of illegals would have been stemmed. But that wasn't the Federal game plan.

The failure of Republicans in the House to follow up on obvious voter fraud in the case of Bob Dornan vs. Loretta Sanchez was an absolute disgrace! Sanchez clearly "won" with illegal votes -- even the L.A. Times admitted it! -- but House Republicans rolled over. They couldn't offend those potential "Republican" votes, don't you know? It was absolutely sickening.

That is not so much the case now....Florida’s Hispanic immigrants/illegals are mostly non-Cuban...coming from South America and Domincan Rep. In agricultural areas, there are now a lot of Mexicans and Central Americans.

And, this is not including the US citizen Puerto Ricans, which have large populations in Central Florida

Therefore, if California were to experience a wave of mass immigration from Asia, its long-term economic prospects would be improved

As if the dirt of California was the only thing about it that's American, and the characteristics of the inhabitants is irrelevant, other than their exchange value.

If California is predominantly Mexican, it isn't America, it's Mexico.

And those aren't my words. Those are the words of the Mexicans themselves, who at least have national consciousness.

And the same would be true of a predominantly Chinese population.

When the White people who settled California and their co-ethnics who followed them there in the 20th century are gone, it ain't gonna be "America", no matter how many people want to pretend that "it's just another immigrant group".

Look at the numbers. LAUSD is 9% non-hispanic white. Those numbers were reversed in 1960, and for the previous 100 years.

Such a thing has a name: Invasion.

And Invasion is not a civil right.

It is going to take something really really big to wake up the liberals. One would have thought 9-11 would wake them up. But apparently not. 9-11 did not even wake Bush up! So if 9-11 did not wake up the GOP, no telling what it is going to take to wake up the Rats now running the government.

Illegal alien Mexican Drug Cartels just burned down 860,000 acres in California. Each of their pot farms cost 100’s of thousands of dollars to clean up, and the environmental damage is permanent...but the Calif. ecofreaks say NOTHING about that.

A forest service worker died this week trying to clean up one of these cartel pot farms this week.

“If the Feds (ably assisted by Democrat Gov. Gray Davis) had allowed Prop 187 to stand, the flow of illegals would have been stemmed.”

There were some other interesting GOP players in the destruction of Prop. 187...Grover Norquist and Stephen Moore & other ‘good’ republicans.
Norquist was the author of Bush’s amnesty. We’ve got traitors in the GOP to clean out before we can even think about the democrats.

[snips]
Working closely with Stephen Moore of the Cato Institute, Cesar Conda (former domestic advisor to Dick Cheney) circulated a statement against Prop. 187 of California in the nineties.
http://towncriernews.blogspot.com/search?q=grover+norquist

“The letters were mainly the work of Cato’s Anderson and Paul Ryan, Brownback’s legislative director, whose ties to the pro-immigration mafia ran deep. A protégé of Conda and an ally of Swartz, Ryan was the staffer who had aided Jack Kemp and William Bennett in their crusade against Proposition 187.....
From the Republican side, the cavalry arrived courtesy of Grover Norquist, who had proved to be one of Swartz’s most significant conduits to the activist right.

Almost from the start, Norquist (who was on Microsoft’s payroll) had been trying to convince the Christian Coalition’s Ralph Reed that being pro family meant being against cuts in family immigration, and that Reed should therefore support split-the-bill. Reed had resisted, but shortly before the vote, at a dinner with Gingrich and Norquist, the Speaker had indicated that he was in favor of splitting the bill.”

We can also thank libtards on Scotus for ignoring the “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” of the 14th Amendment.

This has allowed untold millions of pregnant moms to pop on US soil with the guarantee of citizenship for their children. That was not the intent of Congress and is another example of the harm our out of control blackrobed minor gods have screwed up our country.

Grover Norquist and Stephen Moore & other ‘good’ republicans.

Not so. They are good Libertarians who believe in the "sanctity" of markets, not borders, as do many Libertarian RINOs and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Just because conservatives and the Libertarians at the WSJ editorial page may have some things in common, Libertarians are NOT conservatives. Failure to understand that causes conservatives to frequently misplace their trust. CATO is pure Libertarian and takes many positions completely at odds with conservatives (at least as I define the term).

Many neocons like Bennett and the late Jack Kemp also fit into the Libertarian mold on immigration and a few other issues. There are many who have betrayed American principles through allowing almost unchecked illegal immigration. But if you've read the whole thread you'll remember my posts were aimed at placing most of the blame at the Federal level, not at Californians. All the people you mention are definitely Federal-level players.

Agreed! The sad thing is they’re considered by the ‘experts’ & Media as ‘conservative’. Moore’s creation, ‘The Club for Growth’ gets cited as a conservative barometer for candidates.
