Major American Jewish groups say their relationship with Roman Catholic leaders is at risk because of a recent statement by U.S. bishops' on salvation and evangelizing.

Jewish leaders say that they interpret the bishops' new document as a plan to evangelize Jews during interfaith dialogue. Jews say they can't participate in a dialogue under those conditions.

The bishops had issued the declaration in June. They said that the church doesn't evangelize Jews but will invite them to the faith when it's appropriate.

The Jewish protest was made Thursday by the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, and rabbis

Listen up jews, when we talk of evangelizing, it’s for ALL people, not just jewish. So settle down. If your faith in judaism is strong, no evangelizing is going to sway you. Free speech, freedom of religion, and free flow of ideas. That’s America.

I’ve read statements like this. They are usually very innocuous.

They usually say this about all other faiths, as a blanket statement, with no plan or much meaning behind it other than hundreds of years of traditionally saying it.

Evangelize them and all other non Christians, and even Christians that you think need it.

Jesus very specifically commanded his followers to preach his word. For quite some time after he gave this command the preaching was aimed at Jews only.

I am always flattered when someone evangelizes me. It’s nice to know I’m wanted. But when I graciously decline, the conversation ends easily.

Yep, smack the Christians, ignore the guys who want to behead you while they take Israel.

Maybe... if they’re lucky, muslims will join this protest with them.

I get evangelized by liberals every day. I take the opportunity to evangelize back.

It’s crazy. No one has to become a Catholic unless they choose to. Would it be Jew-friendly if the Church said that Jews weren’t worth evangelizing?

Unsurprisingly, the people who object to this are just about all secular leftist Jews, not religious Jews, who take their faith seriously and have a better understanding of religion.

Same here. And if they are especially nice, I even allow them to engage me in a prayer that I might see the truth if that is what it is they are carrying. (I'm agnostic.)

I have no dog in this fight but I dare say that the ones complaining wouldn't like to have their religion censored and restricted.

Actually, that's where Islam came from.

I have news for these folks: Catholics are your friends. We are not trying to convert you. However, if you are wanting to learn about Christianity, we will be happy to talk with you.

Now, I suggest you direct your concerns towards those in Islam who are trying to kill you all off.

Yet the Catholics are willing to meet with them, despite their faith in which they consider themselves uniquely covered by God’s grace.

I’m never frighted of speaking to Jehova Witnesses and offering them a glass of water.

I don't know. I've seen some of the more Orthodox having problems but their argument is usually very circular. Their main complaint is with the dilution or destruction of their group (identity?). They (some) claim that they don't evangelize others and that their religion allows others to freely worship without condemnation (and the need for evangelizing). But when it's pointed out that if that is the case, then there is no actual threat from evangelism...they backtrack to the Noahide law which states that you can only worship one God and the Christian God is considered polytheistic. So...it's kind of a multilevel issue for them. Religious and identity politics.

I found this out during a heated discussion between several Jews and Christians.lol

This is very short-sighted.

Career opportunities abound in the Roman Catholic Church for Jewish converts, over the centuries many have become Abbots, Bishops, Archbishops and Cardinals. Recently, a convert was the Archbishop of Paris! Not bad!

As a Catholic, I would have to say that it’s simply impossible to give up on a whole class of people and say that we won’t touch them for fear of offending somebody.

Conversion cannot be forced. But some Jews have been persuaded that this is the right way for them. And why should they not have that choice? It’s better than abandoning their religion and becoming leftist Israel-haters, as so many of them have done.

It seems unlikely that—at least until the end of the world, when who knows what happens?—Jews will simply cease to exist because Catholics have converted all of them. Many more Jews are lost through intermarriage and secularization and leftist ideology that has nothing to do with the Covenant, than have been converted to the Church. And the Church wishes to be Israel’s ally and friend—which is more than you can say about Islam or the forces of leftist secularization.

On the other hand, if religious Jews feel that God has called them to be Jews and to obey the Covenant, that is also their right, and a virtuous course for them to take. The Church supports that right.
