OTIS AIR BASE, Mass. (Aug. 23) - Hurricane Bill blew out in time for the Obama family to blow in to Martha's Vineyard for the president's first vacation since taking office.
The first family began their vacation Sunday just hours after the National Hurricane Center lifted a tropical storm warning that had included the small island off the Massachusetts coast where the Obamas plan a weeklong break. The hurricane forced the president to delay his departure from Andrews Air Force Base by a few hours to midafternoon.
During the flight from Washington to the Coast Guard station at Otis Air Base on Cape Cod, White House spokesman Bill Burton conveyed a message from Obama, who boarded Air Force One in khakis and without jacket or tie, to the reporters traveling with him. The Obama then were to take a helicopter across the water to Martha's Vineyard.
"He wants you to relax and have a good time. Take some walks on the beaches. Nobody's looking to make any news," Burton told reporters on the plane.
Some Obama friends, including White House adviser Valerie Jarrett and Chicago physician Eric Whitaker, joined the family on the island. The president has no official events scheduled in the week ahead. Obama's sister, Maya, and her husband also joined.
"You can bet there's going to be some golf playing. Maybe a little bit swimming," Burton said.
Then there are the likely trips for ice cream and salt water taffy, possibly a bike ride and plenty of quiet time at a secluded 28-acre private estate that rents for $35,000 a week. The Obamas are paying for their share of the vacation home; taxpayers are picking up the tab for security and White House staff, which is customary for all presidents.

Has the media been particularly intrusive into these children’s lives. I have not noticed it.
They keep saying to press “we want privacy” but just watch, they will be out looking picture perfect with the kids for ice cream for perfect photo-ops like they have in the past. My bet it will be before Wednesday. They are waaay too narcissistic to be private for very long

This is not your average family...whatever they do together is nothing more than a opportunity for a photo shoot. I don’t see or feel that ob actually gets involved with his children. There is a coolness (yeah, I know, he’s COOL!) a arms-length approach to his kids. He lacks warmth, he is awkward with them it seems. His children serve a purpose that has nothing to do with family love. OB is a empty vessel and cannot give of himself to anyone...who loves OB more than OB!
I think he’s been to Hawaii twice since the election. He seems to be on the road all the time.
Geez, like we or even the stupid press is interested in his daughters. We are interested in his stupid policies not whether he or his family has as excellent adventure.

I was really angry when FOX News interrupted their news show to present the glorious landing of Air Force One. Seems like they will never learn.
I don’t think you have to worry, it will probably not be possible to find a bikini big enough to fit her.
He even brought them into the Kremlin, during one of his other vacations.
