AP IMPACT: New meth formula avoids anti-drug laws
Breitbart (AP) ^ | August 24, 2009 | Justin Juozapavicius

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - This is the new formula for methamphetamine: a two-liter soda bottle, a few handful of cold pills and some noxious chemicals. Shake the bottle and the volatile reaction produces one of the world's most addictive drugs.

Only a few years ago, making meth required an elaborate lab—with filthy containers simmering over open flames, cans of flammable liquids and hundreds of pills. The process gave off foul odors, sometimes sparked explosions and was so hard to conceal that dealers often "cooked" their drugs in rural areas.

But now drug users are making their own meth in small batches using a faster, cheaper and much simpler method with ingredients that can be carried in a knapsack and mixed on the run. The "shake-and-bake" approach has become popular because it requires a relatively small number of pills of the decongestant pseudoephedrine—an amount easily obtained under even the toughest anti-meth laws that have been adopted across the nation to restrict large purchases of some cold medication.

Good, maybe we can buy Sudafed again.

Last year’s sinus infection -— brought on by the inability to find some place open to sell me Sudafed on a weekend and drain my infected head-— officially made me a libertarian when it comes to drugs.

Stop the stupid drug war.

All it does is make money for criminals and create a massive secret police state for Obama to arrest us.

It's kind of ironic that one must show more State issued ID to purchase a cold medication than one has to in order to vote in a Presidential election.

All it does is make money for criminals and create a massive secret police state for Obama to arrest us.

Welcome to the fold.

I believe it was said about the American Civil War (by a Southerner): "We should have freed the slaves first, and then fired on Ft Sumter."

I would support an end to the War on Drugs, but first I'd like to see all government welfare stop -- Food, housing, healthcare, all of it. If you want something, work for it, earn it, and pay for it. What that means is that people who get caught up in the drug lifestyle would suffer and die at a rapid pace and would cause fewer problems.

What we have now is a culture of enablement so that drug users can get themselves in trouble, but survive on the edge with help from the money in my pocket. I don't like that. If they do what they want to do and suffer ALL of the consequences then I'm fine with that. But simply ending the War on Drugs is not a good FIRST step.

Weird story.

First it details how this new method can be done in the back seat of a car or on the living room couch and doesn’t require a lab.

But then it begins to catalog the (apparently unrelated?) increase in lab busts since 2007?

Strange.

From the article:

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

But the number of busts has begun to climb again, and some authorities blame the shake-and-bake method for renewing meth activity.

The AP review of 14 states found:

—At least 10 states reported increases in meth lab seizures or meth-related arrests from 2007 to 2008.

—The Mississippi State Crime Lab participated in 457 meth incidents through May 31, up from 122 for the same period a year ago—a nearly 275 percent increase.

—Several states, such as Oklahoma and Tennessee, are on pace this year to double the number of labs busted in 2008. The director of Tennessee’s meth task force said the pace of lab busts in his state is projected to be about 1,300 for 2009, compared with 815 for all of 2008.

Possessing more than “necessary” amounts of Sudafed is a federal crime.

Whatever the hell that means.

A stockpiler (who had it along with food and whatever in a bomb shelter) was arrested recently.

Everything you do is probably a crime.

I saw this method demonstrated on the Discovery Channel (I think) a few months ago.

It was easy, but the reaction was violent, and the producer still had to wear a hazmat suit.

However, since my first degree was in chemistry, I see income potential in this....

COLD MEDICINE!!! You need an ID and still the federal government limits the amount of COLD MEDICINE that a free citizen can purchase.

Yep, without Pseudoephedrine in it, NyQuil is about worthless, also. We were traveling in April and both came down sick. When we went to WalMart to get Sudafed, we knew that we would have to sign a log, but when they saw that our address was out of state, we got the third degree. It finally took the pharmacist himself to OK our purchase of 1 single pack of Sudafed.

My wife and I both have numerous allergies and living in Florida where something is always in bloom, even in the dead of Winter, means we need lots of decongestants, year ‘round. This last change in the law has been a royal PITA. Especially for her. She is very prone to sinus infections and once they get a hold on her it’s a real challenge to clear them up. The law has made it all but impossible to buy enough of any antihistamine with decongestant to do what needs to be done.

I’m with you. Stop with this silly war that has had much greater effect on law abiding citizens than it ever will on those who want to make drugs. Face it, these guys are pros, and if they’ve made up their minds to break the law to make big bucks, having you and I sign for every little pill of anything -D will do precious little to deter them.

According to the American Dental Association, meth mouth "is probably caused by a combination of drug-induced psychological and physiological changes resulting in xerostomia (dry mouth), extended periods of poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of high-calorie, carbonated beverages and bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)

Can someone please explain to me why anyone would ever take meth? Even though I don't do drugs, I can sort of understand why someone would to marijuana and I can even understand why someone might use cocaine but meth just doesn't doesn't seem to have any acceptable outcomes at all and there are easier ways to commit suicide.

Meth causes salivary glands to dry out allowing the mouth’s acid to eat away at the tooth enamel.

Meth users tend to grind their teeth and they also crave sugar.

I agree with your statement... I have tried every active ingredient available over the counter for the sinus crud I usually get at least every fall/early winter. The ONLY thing that can keep it under control - Pseudoephedrine. I keep the stuff on hand now.

I’ve never heard of a druggie having to show ID to buy meth... but I have to show ID, sign an electronic document, and find a pharmacy open to buy a simple cold medicine.

YOu don’t win a war by punishing the innocent. You win it by coming down hard on the enemy. If we are going to fight a drug war - then really do it. This hanky-panky that has been going on for the last few decades has done nothing more than harm innocent people, while doing relatively little to actually stop the illegal drugs.

Personally - I am not for legalizing illicit drugs. I have seen way too much damage done by them (and not that which is brought on by the “war on drugs”).

Good!
Local drug-maker here(rural central GA) had his “lab” go up in his face last November. Burned his house down and he spent 9 weeks in a burn unit and is still quite disfigured I’m told. No insurance whatsoever...
Local “law enforcement” declined to even prosecute. The reason: they could not afford to pay his medical expenses.

I follow you - but where are the teeth to your suggestion? I am all for accountability. So what do you do with those who make bad choices? Can we dump them on a deserted island and let them fend for themselves? Regardless of if illicit drugs are made legal or not - one still has to deal with the problems of drug use. I guarantee that druggies will get their drugs, one way, or the other.

The effects of toxic chemicals used to make meth. The babies breath it while it’s being ‘cooked’.

Many have sleeping issues. They can become agitated by noise, light or touch. Sometimes they have shorter attention spans and delays in motor skills. Children may also have trouble during feeding like sucking, under eating or over eating.

These kids are at a very high risk for mental health and substance-abuse disorders.

Call you family doctor. He/she can prescribe your decongestant and you won’t have to hand over your driver’s license when you get them. A telephone call will do or at least in Arkansas you only need a phone call from your doctor to the pharmacy. Your insurance MAY pay too if you’re lucky by having them prescribed.

We have found this is one way around the requirements for getting them over the counter. Leave it to the druggies to cause more problems. That’s all they have to do all day.

I know some that did it because it allowed them to stay up for 3 days at a time to work or party long hours. And yeah I've heard the sexual reasons as well. But weed is just as good for that and waaaay less harmful. People that take meth are the people that want a rush like coke and speed give you. They say you feel invincible and on top of the world. Pretty tempting for someone in a trailer park with a dead end job and no future.

Took my kids to the dentist for checkups last week. The dentist asked if the kids drank coke and such. I said yes, occasionally. He told me that kids who drink Mt. Dew (mine don’t) get more acid on their teeth than regular meth users. Freaky.
