Rangel discloses $660K more in assets By: John Bresnahan August 25, 2009 08:05 PM EST

New financial disclosure reports filed by Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) show that the veteran lawmaker failed to report more than $660,000 in assets during 2007, a potential violation of House ethics rules.

Rangel, chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, also had previously stated that he sold a Florida condominium in 2007, but an amended report covering that year – filed in mid-August – now makes no mention of that transaction. It appears that Rangel no longer owns the condo as it is not listed on his 2008 financial report, filed last month.

The latest revelations on Rangel’s personal finances may prove problematic for the New York Democrat, who is already the target of a wide-ranging ethics investigation. That probe, which Rangel and House Democratic leaders had hoped would last a few months, is now coming up on its one-year anniversary.

The ethics panel is looking into Rangel’s use of several rent-stabilized apartments in a luxury Harlem apartment building, his failure to fully pay taxes on a vacation home in the Dominican Republic, and the lawmaker’s fundraising on behalf of the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College in New York City.

The ethics committee recently broadened the Rangel investigation to include Caribbean trips taken by Rangel and four other lawmakers. The panel is seeking to determine if the trips complied with the House’s ban on corporate-funded travel.

Rangel has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, but the new financial-disclosure reports for 2007 show at least $662,000 in previously undeclared assets held by the lawmaker.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME

adam clayton powell

Ultimately, Powell used up his political currency. Members of the House, happy to find a reason to silence him, expelled him for pocketing congressional employment paychecks to his wife, and for taking junkets abroad with female staffers. The fighter in him took the case all the way to the Supreme Court. He won back his seat. Even then, he was docked $25,000 to repay the illegal kickback. But the people of Harlem grew tired of Powell's unbelievable record of roll call absences and endless litigations. In 1970, they finally voted him out. Two years later, he died of prostate cancer at the age of 63.

In January 1967, following allegations that Powell had misappropriated Committee funds for his personal use and other corruption allegations, the House Democratic Caucus stripped Powell of his committee chairmanship. The full House refused to seat him until completion of an investigation by the Judiciary Committee. In March the House voted 307 to 116 to exclude him. Powell won the special election in April to fill the vacancy caused by his exclusion, but did not take his seat.

By the mid-1960s Powell was being increasingly criticized for mismanagement of the committee budget, taking trips abroad at public expense, including travel to his retreat on the Bahamian isle of Bimini, and missing sittings of his committee. He was also under fire in his district, where his refusal to pay a slander judgment made him subject to arrest. He spent increasing amounts of time in Florida and displayed his wealth more than was wise for a Congressman representing a poor district. In June 1970 he was defeated in the Democratic primary by Charles B. Rangel , who has represented the area ever since. Powell failed to get on the ballot for the November election as an independent. He resigned as minister at the Abyssinian Baptist Church and moved to Bimini.

Until then, my congresscritters can bite me.

Right. We do not currently have any justice at the national level in this nation. It is a sad reality. Hopefully, as we move the pendulum back from the socialist abyss, some of that will change.

Give old Charlie the “Ted Treatment”.

Don’t forget to call him old, senile or “out of touch” - you know, the whole ball of wax.

Hah!

Geithner will commemorate the 1 million dollar bill.

If some people want to get elected to congress all they need to say is, "Power in Washington causes corruption!! Look at all the men and women who have either gone to prison or have been charged with ethics violations.

How does a person who is of average means get to own houses in foreign countries and homes in three locations on a salary of $150,000 a year? They can earn no outside income from any type of other work, they are not able to get speaking fees...how do they get rich? The answer is corruption and it will end when we make Washington less powerful over the lives of Americans."

The latest revelations on Rangel’s personal finances may prove problematic for the New York Democrat,

Heh.

Not unless it results in his incarceration. The drooling moron dems in his district would re-elect him no matter what.

Proving once again that the opposition party's idiocy is outdone only by their avarice.

Just the other day I found about $600k in some pants in my closet.

Then I realized that I’m not a Democrat so it couldn’t be possible and I woke up.
