Breaking News: Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy Has Died

He came to be known as a stalwart proponent of what is currently being called a liberal or even progressive social agenda. However his change of position on the fundamental human right, the right to life, like others now identified with those labels including Rev. Jesse Jackson, changed entirely. In fact, with Kennedy's change the entire content of the meaning of those political labels seems to have changed. Senator Kennedy began his political career as a strong defender of the rights of children in the womb. For example, in 1971, Senator Kennedy described his then strongly Pro-Life position in these words:
"While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized -- the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grown old.
"I share the confidence of those who feel that America is working to care for its unwanted as well as wanted children, protecting particularly those who cannot protect themselves. I also share the opinions of those who do not accept abortion as a response to our society's problems -- an inadequate welfare system, unsatisfactory job training programs, and insufficient financial support for all its citizens.
"When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception."

Tributes are pouring in from people of many varying and often conflicting political positions for a man who certainly will be remembered as a political icon.

May God have mercy on his soul (and forgive him for being such a poor example of a Catholic)
To: tcg
He also died at God’s request...not Washington’s. It’s a right I hope we all can be blessed with for the future.

Watch for Democrats to name any health care legislation after him and try to push it through as “ let’s get it done for Teddy”.
To: thethirddegree
Teddy is dead. He doesn’t need one damned thing done.

MY sincere condolences to his family and friends. I may not have agreed with him politically, but he had people who loved him and those people deserve our best wishes.

I am overwhelmed (with joy). He meets all the unborn children he is responsible for, Mary Jo Kopecky, and those departed whose misery he and his drunken clan have caused.
There will be infighting in the NDP, I hope.
Sorry if I offend some who shed crocodile tears.

They can name it whatever the hell they want. Like what, opposition will evaporate because he kicked the bucket?
Ted Kennedy wasn’t some national hero whose death will all of a sudden make socialized medicine more appealing. Especially seeing that he had his own health insurance + congressional perks.

Maybe Im alone here, but my guess is that behind the closed office and chamber doors in Washington this morning, the Dems are breathing a collective sigh of relief that they no longer have to deal with the living breathing millstone of Ted Kennedy hanging around their necks. Oh, theyll pay verbal homage to a 40+year serving senator, say all the right things, get some face time and press the flesh, but this guy was a quiet stain that they couldnt cover up. They dont have to defend him any longer, they dont have to always consult a Kennedy when making a power decision, and they no longer have to kiss his sizeable ass. Its the end, FINALLY, of Camelot.
Now then can concentrate on Bamalot.

yup..he had no real friends... Just drinking buddies and fellow politicians. Without his money, name and power Teddy Bare would have been largely scorned and ignored .. Let the devil kick him around, we're done with his voice. His legacy will fester us.

Since the Bamster is already up in Martha's vineyard, will he attend the funeral -- recall it was Uncle Ted's endorsement of TheClotheslessEmperor over the Hildebeast which got him the nomination.
And will he use it to push for Kopechnecare Obamacare?

I saw him and some of his nephews and their aides in the Hawk and Dove on evening, drinking, yelling, playing pool and just generally being boorish ham-heads....what a disgusting, repulsive bunch of layabouts. What would they be doing if JFK had never become president? Probably padres of some Irish mafia family.

My grand Aunt Agnes (born 1894) was a guest in the Chappaquitc (sp) the night when the drunk Teddy left Mary Jo to drown. Her key observation was how the Inn was taken over by guys in suits.
