UPDATED: Hatch says there's only one moderate Dem @ 10:20 am by Eric Zimmermann
There's only one moderate left in the Democratic caucus, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said today.
Appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Hatch said that since the days he entered the Senate, the parties have become more polarized and less willing to work together.
"You [used to have] at least 12 conservatives that you could call conservatives on the Democratic side," Hatch said. "We probably had about 12 liberals on our side, and it was much more balanced."
"Today, there's only one moderate, as I see it, real moderate, in the Democratic United States senate," Hatch continued, "and on the Republican side we've gone pretty conservative, we only ahve two liberals on the Republican side, as I can see it now."
So who is the only Democratic moderate? (I'll assume for the moment that Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are the Republican "liberals.") The obvious choice would be Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), who's been pretty skeptical about healthcare reform, among other liberal initiatives.
But what about Max Baucus? Kent Conrad? Evan Bayh? Does Hatch not consider them moderates?
UPDATE: Hatch's office confirms that the senator was referring to Ben Nelson on the Democratic side, and Snowe/Collins on the Republican side. So there you goBaucus, Conrad, Bayh, are all liberals.
Must be talking about McCain.
That’s sure not going to do anything for the Dems support of Nelson come re-election time.
Baucus, Conrad and Bayh ARE liberals.
That was my first thought.
So’s Ben Nelson. He got a 16 from the ACU last year.
I cannot classify Hatch as a conservative, so he has no credibility with me.
Evan Bayh is not a frekin ‘moderate’, he’s a Harry Reid Liberal!
And the sun rises in the east.
In the Senate? Not that many at once since the 60's at the latest Orrin. Unless you mean "moderate" when you say "conservative".
But what about Max Baucus? Kent Conrad? Evan Bayh? Does Hatch not consider them moderates?
They aren't 100% moonbats but I wouldn't call them moderates. Though anything less than full tilt moonbat is 'moderate for a democrat' these days. But that trio is well to the left of what I consider the center.
So there you goBaucus, Conrad, Bayh, are all liberals.
Ooo do I detect Sarcasm from "Eric Zimmermann"? Shut up Eric.
