Tax hikes coming for Californians anyway
Hot Air ^ | August 27, 2009 | Ed Morrissey

Californians must have thought they’d sent a loud and clear message to Sacramento in May when they rejected a series of referendums that would have approved tax hikes to solve their budget crisis. The only ballot initiative approved cut off legislators’ pay when they failed to produce a budget, in what should have been a sign that the Golden State electorate had had enough. The political class in the state capital apparently has their fingers stuck firmly in their ears:

From the Article: For only the second time in 30 years, the tax board is lowering the point where each tax bracket begins, bumping many people into a higher category. At the same time, officials are cutting back some deductions. Everyone will pay more, even people whose bracket or income doesn’t change.

The extra sums will total as much as $140 per family, on top of the increases previously enacted.

Wait til residents of Los Angeles get their property tax bills this winter and realize they voted themselves an increase from the Los Angeles Unified School District, that stellar institution of learning.

What a wonder California once was and I suppose in many ways, still is.

What the counterculture idiots have destroyed saddens me, even from 2000 miles away here in St. Louis.

Check this out for an outrage in California.

Yeah, this is the Governor's response to my "complaint" about such programs:

Thank you for sharing your concerns with me about the impact of illegal immigration on California.

The federal government's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation is a reality we live with every day in our schools, workplaces and hospitals. We can no longer ignore this issue or try to solve the problem at the margins. However, we must not disregard the contributions undocumented immigrants make to our society. To a large extent, a lot of the food we eat today is picked and created by undocumented immigrants. Many people blame these undocumented immigrants for the economic crisis that California is facing, but I think it's an easy scapegoat for people to point the finger and say that our budget is out of whack because of illegal immigrants. It's not. Our budget is out of whack because we have self-inflicted wounds that we never had the will to repair - until now. The legislature and I are working together to create a revenue system in California that is far more stable and will help avoid the extreme swings that have caused crippling deficits.

I am not advocating for illegal immigration; instead, I am recognizing immigrants' contributions to our state. I will continue to call on our nation's federal officials to attack the problem by crafting a comprehensive immigration policy. California cannot solve this problem alone - we need federal action that secures our border, protects taxpayers and creates a forward-looking policy to meet the labor needs of our economy. What our border needs is more personnel, more assets and improved technology, so I'm encouraged by President Obama's multi-department approach that commits to doing just that along our southwest border.

Immigration is an important issue that affects California, and I thank you for writing. I truly appreciate your commitment to the future of our Golden State.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

It’s not just counterculture idiots. A large percentage of Californians are now foreign born and like government handouts.

Lazy doesn’t describe the well paid ones who bring over their elderly parents and get them on SSI so that you get to pay for their retirement.

Unfortunately they are. Don’t think that the massive Mexican scoffing at American immigration “law” has gone unnoticed by the rest of the world. The Mexican illegals get most of the publicity out here due to sheer numbers but they are hardly the only ethnic group adding to the immigration/illegal immigration burden. It’s legal immigrants, usually professionals, who know how to game the system to get their elderly relatives on SSI.

There have to be entire villages from Asia, India, and the middle east that are here illegally. In my part of SoCal there are many highly successful immigrants with nice little homes of 10,000 sq feet or more who bring their friends and family over on visitors visas, and they simply never go home. They move out on their own and start little enclaves. You can find work, go to school, get medical care, and thrive without anyone ever bothering you. And most of the time American and California taxpayers are being required to finance this scheme. I’d just like to thank Dubya and Obama and the rest of the open borders politicians for refusing to enforce our laws, it’s made California such a paradise. /s

I did not know that.

I feel stupid, in that my original sarcasm I was actually complimenting the work ethic of Asian immigrants.

I’ll withdraw that praise, and for those you describe revert to a blunt “A$$holes!”

Hope you don’t mind.

Thanks for the (sad) education.

Officials said the latest adjustments have been triggered by inflation, or rather the lack of it. This year, the state’s inflation index was a negative number for the first time since 1983. When the economy takes a deep plunge, so do tax brackets.

The dishonesty and arrogance is so thick in the air you could cut it with a chainsaw. Do brackets go UP when the state's inflation index is a positive number? When the economy soars, do tax brackets?

Right. That's what I thought.

The biggest problem I have with stories like this one is that names are not named. I don't care what some "officials" say - - I want the NAMES of the lying sacks of dog feces.

Right. That’s what I thought.”

That’s why we passed Proposition 13 back in the 70s. Property values doubled and therefore so did taxes. Elderly people on fixed incomes were literally forced to sell their homes because they couldn’t afford their taxes. Now, of course, there is a move to repeal Prop 13, which ought to finish off what is left of California.
