There was a poignant footnote to President Obama's historic July 10 meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican. Behind closed doors in the papal library, Obama handed Benedict a letter that Senator Edward Kennedy had asked him to personally deliver to the Pontiff.
*snip*
In the eyes of the traditionalist wing of the Church, however, Kennedy should have been asking the Pope for forgiveness. The Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Romano reported Kennedy's death, praising his work on civil rights and fighting poverty, but noted that his record was marred by his stance on abortion.
As of yet, unlike some other world leaders, Pope Benedict has not commented or issued an official communiqué in response to Kennedy's death. One veteran official at the Vatican, of U.S. nationality, expressed the view of many conservatives about the Kennedy clan's rapport with the Catholic Church:
"Why would he even write a letter to the Pope? The Kennedys have always been defiantly in opposition to the Roman Catholic magisterium."
*snip*
Back at headquarters, however, there is little room for nuance. "Here in Rome, Ted Kennedy is nobody. He's a legend with his own constituency," says the Vatican official.
"If he had influence in the past, it was only with the Archdiocese of Boston, and that eventually disappeared too." Some say the final sunset on the Kennedy name within Catholic halls of power was the Vatican's decision in 2007 to overturn the annulment of the first marriage of former U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy, the eldest son of Robert Kennedy. The successful appeal by Joe Kennedy's ex-wife Sheila Rauch, an Episcopalian, was another blow to the Kennedy image in Catholic circles.

Bump ..
I wasn’t aware the Pope was expected to weigh in on the death of every drunken degenerate. Must be taxing for him.
Silence is Golden (and perhaps louder)
He was a legend in his own mind - someone who was born on third base and believed he hit a triple.
Exactly as it should be. The man was a wretched reprobate. He lied, cheated, slandered and killed. He did no known good works, unless you count spending other peoples' money. His worldly power was and is meaningless.
The Vatican does not think much of the pro-abortion Obama White House either.
Il Giornale claims that the appointment of a new US ambassador to succeed Mary Ann Glendon has proved difficult because of the strained relations between the White House and the Holy See, which has been less than enamoured of Barack Obamas public support for both abortion and stem cell research.
Good for the Vatican. Both Kennedy and Obama are scum.
kennedy fought poverty? there are more poor people now than under Bush
He did well in supporting anyone who worked in the bourbon industry.
That’s a good one.
Maybe being born on third base would also explain his sense of entitlement with the ladies...
:-)
While Kennedys body is in repose on Earth his soul shall remain in repose in purgatory.
On another note Caroline was presented to the Holy See as a possible Ambassador and the Vatican said No because she is Pro Choice.

That Vatican official is a fool. He was the American king-maker, selecting the presidential candidates of both parties, McCain and Obama. President Bush allowed Sen. Kennedy to be de-facto Prime Minister. The liberal Republican heading the Education committee was so gobsmacked by Bush’s fealty to Kennedy, he publicly asked why the hell he was a Republican if a Democrat, Kennedy, was writing the legislation... and so Sen. Jeffords became left the Republicans, handing control of the Senate to the Democrats.
Much to the eternal infamy of the United States Congress, Kennedy was by far the most dominant senator in 20th century and 21st century history.
Oh, he fought poverty, alright. By killing all the poor’s babies.
Why is the official a fool?

Rome isn't America, and I would suspect he would know more about the influence of Ted Kennedy in Rome than most of us here.

The Pope must've known my mom, she always said, "If you can't say anything good about somebody,....."
Ted Kennedy was a faithful Catholic...every six years.
Model behavior. We can thank him for his example.
The media view Kennedy as a celebrity and probably expected that, as a "catholic", so did the Catholic Church. Reality can be like the shock of a cold shower.

EMK says far more about the people of MA than he does himself.
I have fallen in love with Rome.
My faith has been restored.

The Vatican knows who he was and how little that really counts now. But as you say, too bad that Bush deferred to the duke of Massachusetts in his effort to seem “companionate.” The idea that one can “legislate learning” is absurd, but all politicians have bought the idea. Newsflash. In my local school districtthey are bragging about the new press box, with air-conditioning and an elevator in anticipation of more coverage as the school increases in size. It is bad choices like this that make increased expenditure on schools an utter waste. Right in line with hiring redundant administrators.
Which is one reason why that Church is now in the pits.
“Here in Rome, Ted Kennedy is nobody. He’s a legend with his own constituency,” says the Vatican official. “
Same for here in New York!!
If only our pseudo-conservative and RINO Republican leaders would follow the Pope's example. I am specifically referring to John McCain, Sarah Palin, Rick Perry, and a host of others.
During Benedict's 2008 trip to the U.S., there was some heated debate (with conflicting photographs and eyewitness accounts) about whether or not Kennedy took Holy Communion at the papal mass at Nationals Stadium in Washington, with conservatives insisting that the Pope says the rite should be denied to pro-choice politicians.
With this in mind, Church observers are keen to see if Boston's Archbishop Cardinal Sean O'Malley will preside over Kennedy's funeral.

God Bless Pope Benedict XVI
My respect for him went up another notch. Only hypocrites and crawlers would heap praise on Ted Kennedy.
Sadly, he is going to preside at the commendation segment, although he won’t be the celebrant of the Mass.

Thank you for the information. I won’t be watching, and I am thankful for small blessings, but altogether, it’s another sad day for the Church.
