Bush's Guard Service

Media Bias: Veteran reporter, author and commentator Bernard Goldberg reports that when CBS News did its fake National Guard story on George W. Bush avoiding service in Vietnam, it knew it was a lie.

It's a liberal urban legend that Bush used the influence of his father and his father's friends to land a cushy position in the Texas National Guard to avoid service in Vietnam. The Democrats would run John Kerry as a hero in the war, and CBS News was all too eager to help with Mary Mapes producing a "60 Minutes II" segment in September 2004 charging exactly that.

The story collapsed quickly as documents used to support the allegations against Bush were proved to be amateur night forgeries. CBS did an internal investigation that discredited the memos and caused the network to fire Mapes. Later Dan Rather, who narrated the story, said that while the memos may not have been genuine, he was certain the story was. That was his story, and he stuck to it.

Retired Col. Ed Morrisey, the man who swore Bush into the Guard, told CBS affiliate WVLT in Knoxville, Tenn., a different story. "The Air Force, in their ultimate wisdom, assembled a group of F-102s and took them to Southeast Asia. Bush volunteered to go. But he needed to have 500 (flight) hours, but he had just over 300 hours, so he wasn't able to go," Morrisey said.

Anyone who flies fighters wants to kick some ass. No one was drafted to fly fighters in Vietnam, they all wanted the assignment.

You know, as contemptuous as I am of the mainstream DNC press, I sometimes still grant them a shred of integrity. I assumed that they believed a fake story and believed their fake documents because it all fit their view of things and because they wanted to believe them that badly.

Now it turns out that even I give them way too much credit.

They lied, and they knew they were lying.

It was their hatred of President Bush. They could not get over that their heroes Al Gore and J F**king Kerry lost the elections in 2000 and 2004

Liberals are basically lawbreakers. The Constitution is the FIRST law of the land and every liberal wants to disobey it. They are a criminal class at heart!

How about the story about a certain late senator who didn’t want to go to Korea so —under his father’s influence— was put in Paris instead?

One thing we can be sure of: Don't expect to see this particular story on "60 Minutes."

Heh-heh. I won't hold my breath.

Why take an F102A into combat when it could kill a higher percentage of pilots in peace time than the F4 or F105 could do in combat?

The first person in the world to expose the CBS documents as forgeries was Buckhead on FR, within an hour of the original broadcast of the 60 Minutes program.

“It was their hatred of President Bush. They could not get over that their heroes Al Gore and J F**king Kerry lost the elections in 2000 and 2004.”

I must agree. Their hatred of Bush was based upon the losses incurred by Gore and Kerry. It boils down to the Leftist crybabies didn’t get their way. They believed they had it all sewn up, and that it would be them from WJC on. Bush was the party crasher in their opinion.

They threw a tantrum. A childish tantrum at that.

iirc W's draft number was in the high 200's - mid 300's

meaning he never would of been drafted anyway...

He wanted to be a pilot like his father was a pilot.

It’s as simple as that.

He also loves Texas.

Ergo, Texas Air National Guard.

Whatever else one wants to say about the man - good and bad, and it’s all been said right here on Free Republic...

Bush’s second term was a disaster
for the Republican party.

Why are people defending him?

We’re defending the truth. There is a lot to criticize Bush about, yes. But the Air National Guard issue is pure libel. If we allow the MSM to libel Bush on his service they will stop at nothing, on any issue or person.

i agree with that, just saying he enlisted even though he never would of been drafted cause of his high number.

The draft lottery was introduced at the end of 1969 when GWB was 23, so his high lottery number was meaningless—he would have been drafted already if he had not entered the Texas National Guard.

Bush made a number of mistakes in his second term, but Kerry would have been much worse—Iraq would be a total disaster by now, and there would have been two flaming liberals appointed to the Supreme Court instead of Roberts and Alito.

I voted for Bush eight times.
i wish I could have the last two back.
I would vote for Kerry, in the 2008 general, if I could do it again.
My feeling is that he (Bush) sold me out, in the interest of his
legacy.
His legacy is the ‘’nation-building’’’ in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
I hope the nation building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan fail.

just my opinion

The only advantage to Kerry winning in 2004 might have been that he would have done so badly that the Republicans would have beat him in 2008...but in addition to letting Iraq turn into total chaos or into a terrorist haven, he would have had 3 Supreme Court picks (since Souter would have resigned before the election). The death toll from Katrina would have been even higher but it still would have been blamed on Bush (for not asking for more money for the levies while President).

“I would vote for Kerry, in the 2008 general, if I could do it again.” [In addition to the specious reasoning, you identified the incorrect date.]

“I hope the nation building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan fail.” [This ‘hope’ would of course sentence US and Israeli children to perpetual war (with an empowered terrorist enemy).]

These two statements reveal all I need to know about you and your ‘sell out’ ideology. [How many times did you vote for Ron Paul?]

Bush qualified as a combat aircraft commander. Obama qualified as a sissified, elitist, glass-jawed joke. There IS a difference.
