Richard Egan, the billionaire co-founder of EMC Corp. and the former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, died today of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head, police and other sources confirmed.

Egan, 73, a resident of the Four Seasons condominiums on Boylston Street, had been battling terminal cancer, sources said. He had a visiting nurse attending to him while he underwent treatments. Both the nurse and his wife were in the condominium this afternoon when Egan died at home, sources told the Herald.

Sad, but “died at home” is a bit misleading.

I've always thought that suicide is a way to "give the finger" to the people around you. And to use a shotgun is to really "give the finger" about as emphatically as possible.

Another reason for gun control? or Not?

Imagine if Obamacare required that all suicides be processed through their health exchange.

Maybe if/when you get terminal cancer you will have a little more understanding.

Hard to believe. Maya Mumbles Menino don't allow no stinkin guns in Town.

Wouldn't a blue pill have been more fitting for a billionaire?

One good reason not to get too worked up over not being one of the super rich-—can’t take a lick of it with you when it’s checkout time.

Let me tell you how my grand pa died. he had brain cancer. Surgery could not get all of it so he suffered.

One early morning before anyone got up he went out to his swimming pool, went to the end of the diving board and set down.

Then he took out a long thin bladed meat carving knife and plunged it into his brain through the hole the surgery left.

He then fell into the water. No clean up needed. the family even went swimming in the pool the day after the funeral.

Kind of doubt he was a fan of Ted’s:

>>The GOP stalwart hosted a bash in June 2003 at his Hopkinton home, featuring then-Vice President Dick Cheney, where Bay State Republicans ponied up $1.4 million to help re-elect former President George W. Bush, who appointed him ambassador to Ireland. Three years later, Cheney came to town to honor Egan’s years of public service at a Massachusetts Republican Party fete at the Harvard Club in Boston. Egan and two of his sons, Chris and Michael, were among Bush’s biggest fund raisers, earning the “Rangers” designation for collecting more than $200,000 apiece.
