I figure if they cut the internet, they’ll cut the cell phones too if they can. We should probably look into what they are really capable of. We need to build a freeper ham radio community. How far is the range of Ham radios without using a giant (expensive) antenna?

How far is the range of Ham radios without using a giant (expensive) antenna? I live 30 miles Southwest of Chicago, and talked to a station in Siberia a few months ago on a home brew wire antenna and a 100 watt transceiver, a Kenwood 940 SAT.
Ham radio doesn't have to be an expensive hobby at all, many hams I know take great pride in building their own antenna's on the cheap and talking great distances.
