The Kennedy Brothers: And Then There Were Non

"My fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country." – John F. Kennedy January 20th, 1961

The last Kennedy brother's death was announced on August 26, 2009, marking the end of an era in politics. Ted Kennedy, dead at the age of 77. Referred to as "The Lion of the Senate", his final battle wasn’t just in the Senate; it was also against a year-long struggle with brain cancer.

In the days following, I observed history unfolding; the motorcade escort on August 27, from Hyannisport to the Boston library, where thousands of mourners were lined to view the passing hearse and capture this moment in time. I was privy to (due to cable TV of course) the August 29 ceremony given at the Kennedy Library where 13 of his friends, colleagues and family members shared heartfelt and even humorous memories of their Teddy.

These past few days I have watched documentaries about this captivating and incredible family, the Kennedys; Headliners and Legends, with Lestor Holt, The Kennedy Brothers, narrated by Chris Matthews, and the most compelling: the HBO documentary, Teddy in His Own Words.

Christine's point about statesmen is such a reminder about how far we've come since 1963. I do believe that being selfless in service is one of the greatest gifts one can give away. Just think about this - there are Alphas and wanna be Alphas (take a look at the leaders in your life). True, "authentic" Alphas want to make sure their pack survives, not the other way around.

Well Jack Nicholson did play Whitey Bulger in ‘The Departed’, so he could play ‘Uncle Ted’ in a film about Boston’s other Irish crime family; he’s got the experience portraying sh*tbags, that’s for sure.

"The Departed" - great flick. On my favs list. Jack Nicholson plays Frank Costello, a mobbed up Irishman. Yes, Jack could easily play Teddy. Have to gain about 100 pounds though.

If you're saying the Frank Costello character was taken from Whitey Bulger, I'd agree as Bulger and Costello share many of the same traits.

The character Frank Costello was largely based on James "Whitey" Bulger, a real life Irish-American mobster in Boston who was secretly an FBI informant for over three decades. The revelation that the FBI had long protected Bulger and his gang from prosecution caused a major scandal in Boston law enforcement. Bulger was believed to have been seen coming out of a theater showing the film in San Diego in November 2006.[3][4] Matt Damon's character is based on John Connolly, the FBI agent who tipped off Bulger for years, allowing him to evade arrest. In real life, Bulger went into hiding and is still presumed to be at large, currently occupying a spot on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list; Connolly is currently imprisoned for his role in Bulger's criminal activities.[5] Billy's undercover role as a former State trooper who joins the Irish mob parallels the story of Richard Marinick, a former State trooper who later joined Whitey Bulger's crime syndicate. Billy also lives in Somerville, where Bulger's Winter Hill Gang began. Thomas Duffy, the film's technical advisor (he also plays the Governor at the State Police Academy graduation ceremony), is a former MSP major who was assigned to investigate the Irish mob upon making detective.

Source.

Sorry, I've gone way off topic. Let me come back to the topic by saying I'd also agree that Frank, Whitey and Teddy share lots of traits.

“I’d also agree that Frank, Whitey and Teddy share lots of traits”

Amen! There were/are filthy scumbags.

One thing always sticks out about ‘The Departed’: An Irishman named Frank Costello? Doesn’t sound too Irish to me. There was a real Frank Costello that was a member of the the Luciano/Genovese crime family.

Well Ditter, I’ve disliked Ted Kennedy far more than you can imagine. In fact, the “power” of the whole Kennedy clan makes me wonder what “secret cabal” Joseph Kennedy was CONNECTED to way back when. So, believe me, I’m quite conservative. The article was written by a good friend and I believe she presented a good point about “serving” the country. Now this is a great point for all to ponder - who actually serves the country or business without an agenda? I wish I knew - you are right - all the Kennedy’s have an agenda. So the point of me posting the article was to make us THINK!

Christine Lakatos you have not been paying attention. The Kennedy clan adopted Bama as the surviving Kennedy brother, as is being reported.

Maybe someone can supply Bama that lion skin used in Eddie Murphy's movie that king out of Africa wore, to demonstrate his Kennedyness.

That's because the original 12th-century Gaelic name was MacOisdealbhaigh. Gaelic was usually Anglicized when the Irish migrated to Britain, the U.S. or Canada. The "Costello" spelling could have originated in Italian, but it was applied to Irish named MacOisdealbhaigh.

Thank you for the unintentionally comic line of the day.

I'm sure your Irish must be right, but their spelling is really something.

Those Irish Gaelic spellings really are complicated, aren't they? Here is a comprehensive list of Irish surnames in the original Gaelic.

What if Uncle Tedward had been bald?

If he didn't have those big teeth, and that full head of hair, I doubt he would have been called a lion - no matter what he did in the Senate.

It's unfortunate that the Kennedys spent those years in England. The family picked up the notion that they were a royal family and, thus, had the right to take money from the commoners and hand out the goodies to their favorites.
