WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator John McCain, a torture survivor from his days as a captive during the Vietnam War, says his private comments about harsh interrogation methods were misrepresented by the Bush Administration in a recently released legal document intended to justify a six-day-long course of sleep deprivation for one CIA detainee in November of 2007.
The newly declassified memo by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel mentions a secret briefing McCain and other members of Congress received sometime before October 17, 2006. The memo says the lawmakers were told about six CIA interrogation techniques, including prolonged sleep deprivation.
The memo recounts McCain's reaction this way. "[S]everal Members of Congress, including the full memberships of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees and Senator McCain, were briefed by General Michael Hayden, Director of the CIA, on the six techniques that we discuss herein," writes Steven G. Bradbury, a deputy assistant attorney general in the July 20, 2007, memo, which cites a CIA summary of the discussions. "In those classified and private conversations, none of the Members expressed the view that the CIA detention and interrogation program should be stopped, or that the techniques at issue were inappropriate."
A spokeswoman for McCain said that contrary to those claims, the Arizona Republican repeatedly raised objections in private meetings, including one with Hayden, about the use of sleep deprivation as an interrogation technique. "Senator McCain clearly made the case that he was opposed to unduly coercive techniques, especially when used in combination or taken too far including sleep deprivation," says Brooke Buchanan, a spokeswoman for McCain.

Tell JM to shut the hell up.

This guy has served his purpose. Time for Arizona to get a “real” conservative. I guess he feels that terrorists need to be fully rested before being questioned? Are these guys nuts?
I voted for Sarah not this nimbecile. Gawd John shut up and be a leader in your party.
Oh I forgot. You have to have a spine to do that. Guess they broke that too at the Hanoi Hilton did they? ]
Tell you what...take your little senate name plate there..go join your friends on the other side of the aisle and let a real GOP conservative run for your seat.
” “[S]everal Members of Congress, including the full memberships of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees”
Well, doesn’t that put pelosi at the meeting also!
Up yours Juan.
When will the GOP tell this idiot to STFU? This moron is a DEMOCRAT. Both parties need to be expunged from DC.
One may endure great pain and suffering making one to appear to be a Patriot; But, when that Pain and Suffering are only endured in order to survive and the Enemy Embraced once there is Freedom, then one’s Patriotism may be questioned.....One’’s Friends and Associates are a Reflection of Oneself, and when One chooses a Hanoi War Hero as One’s Close Friend, then is One still an American Patriot?.... Just a Question.... Not a Judgment by any means:-)

Arizona Poll: 24% Support Immigration Bill, 51% Have Unfavorable Opinion of McCain
The impact is even more noticeable on McCain who is now viewed favorably by just 47% of Arizona voters. Fifty-one percent (51%) have an unfavorable of their states Presidential hopeful. Just 15% now have a Very Favorable opinion of McCain while 22% have a Very Unfavorable view.
McCain is a banal, state media stooge. Nothing he says matters.
Would you folks in Arizona PLEASE dump this quack.
The “other” Manchurian Candidate.
The bright side of Obama’s victory was McCain’s loss.
The best thing to come out of McLame is Sarah Palin as a running mate for POTUS.
If the team names were positioned the other way around, (Palin/McLame) we most likely would have a different couple in the WH presently and the political frustration we are presently experiencing wouldn't exist.
McLame would fit right in as V.P. just like (don't mess with) Joe Biden has.
McCain and Pelosi are both in extreme denial...in other words, they are both shameless liars.
When the GOP once again totes a conservative agenda.
mc cain is just as bad as obama and we really didnt have anyone to vote for in last election....after all ...McCain thought he was entitletd to the office
Just please lose. Arizona voters...please just finally kick the damn loser to the curb.
How did this ass ever get the GOP nomination?
.
This a-hole was a piss poor Pilot and now he is a just a kiss ass from AZ. Term limits rings a bell.
What a prick. Perhaps Sean Hannity will remember that the next time he has Juan on for a softball lovefest.
However, on my "despise" scale, McPaine is still 100-orders-of-magnitude lower than oscumbo...
Actually I am pretty sure he served the Democrats/Obama purpose, which may have been his, but hope not.
McCain got the nomination because Democrat crossovers made it so in the primaries. As for his standing in Arizona, the rank and file Conservatives hate his guts, but he is strongly funded by the Party’s Phoenix/Scottsdale/Sedona plutocrats. He is planning to win re-election and then pass on the “mantle” to his daughter.
McCain is politically (and maybe elsewhere?) bipolar.
Today a Dem.
Tomorrow a Repub.
Day after that, a Dem.
Then a....
Whatever the North Vietnamese did to him, it obviously worked.
Run of the mill private disagreement in a snafu government. Time is now making a big deal about it because it fits with the bash-Bush meme du jour.
2008 elections: courtesy open primaries, etc, we were given the choice of Dem McCain or Dem Obama.
A choice of bad or worse.
I voted for Palin.
This old sailor Crash Juan McCain-Kennedy needs to fade away right now. I think his brain has been infected with Kennedy-Kerry Oldtimers. Is he working/hoping for a nice write up when he sails of into the sunset for the last time?
If McCain had taken the White House, he’d probably have found almost the entire remainder of the GOP in revolt against him.
By the way, why can’t conservatives screw up Rat primaries?
It is my belief that McCain was put in to run for President because the Republicans didn’t want this economy. They knew McCain would not win.

Is McCain calling ALL OF THESE PEOPLE LIARS?!
If only McNuts would just go away!
He's always been anti-torture since the issue gives him the opportunity to do what he loves best which is to strut his sanctimonious self in front of the cameras ad nauseum - and we all know how much he enjoys reminding everybody how he was a POW.
I'd find it difficult to believe he didn't raise an objection when that was part of his well-known public schtick at the time, wasn't it? He introduced that McCain Torture bill in 2005 I think and they're talking about 2006 here. So what am I missing?
McCain, get thee to a doctor go!
Pardon me, but is there a definitive list of approved interrogation methods? It seems it is a moving target.
I have my disagreements with McCain, but he is a hero, and gave more than a fair chunk of his life and health for this country. If I criticize him, it won’t be with the kinds of attacks used by liberals. There is plenty to criticize, but I will only do it on the substance. Sorry if we disagree on this aspect of the analysis.
“Would you folks in Arizona PLEASE dump this quack.”
I think he is due up next year. I think he will be voted out. I’m not even sure the local Repub. party would back him.
JM has now gone off the deep end, which has zero to do with his previous service to this country.
None of the libs would have political cover for this without John McCain and Lindsey Graham. Thanks for the gift to Soros/ ACLU.
I think he is due up next year. I think he will be voted out. Im not even sure the local Repub. party would back him.
If money talks then he’ll win going away. The last FEC filing I saw showed McCain with some $27 million cash on hand in his campaign fund.
Arizonanas, I’m begging you to force this man off the public stage.
I say respond to his crazy positions with rational responses rather than name-calling. Of course, I prefer that same tactic for liberals, because I think it is more effective than just name-calling and insults— which I think is more of a DU tactic. I think it detracts from one’s point to use insults rather than logic. Obviously others differ, and that is their right.
It’s past time to drum McCain out of the republican party. He belongs in bed with Specter!
one who is mentally ill, dangerous, foolish or unpredictable.
This is not name calling, it is simply stating the case as I see it.
