LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Firefighters tried Monday to hold back a massive wildfire from consuming thousands of Los Angeles-area homes and a crucial communications center as they mourned two firefighters killed when their vehicle rolled down a mountain.

About 12,000 homes, as well as communications and astronomy centers atop Mount Wilson, were threatened by fire. At least 6,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders Sunday night and over 2,500 firefighters were battling the flames. On the blaze's northwestern front, two firefighters were killed Sunday on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.

Thanks for the info on the La Canada website. We had been watching it, but didn’t know it had La Crescenta info. Thankfully we are 3 blocks below the mandatory evacuation area.

Today we could see the backfires set & they raced up the brush & then would die back when hitting an area already burned. However, the wind has come up in the last hour & we are seeing some serious smoke. It looks like it is in the Pickens Cyn on the LaCanada/La Crescenta border.

To lighten the mood somewhat, the “InciWeb” for the Station Fire had the following: “Steep terrain, decadent old growth brush and hot dry weather are factors that drive fire activity.” I knew the brush was decades old, but had no idea it was decadent too. :o)

Thanks all who are praying for our areas & for the families of the firefighters.

I second that sentiment.

Station Fire knocks out power to nearly 400 homes
Posted: 08/31/2009 02:09:37 PM PDT

The Station Fire has knocked out power to nearly 400 households in Tujunga, Acton, La Canada Flintridge and Azusa, according to a statement released by Southern California Edison.

The company has not yet provided a time frame for power restoration, according to the city of La Canada Flintridge's website.

There are currently 389 customers without power, and the total number of customers affected since the fires began is 1,606, the statement said. Some fire-damaged electric equipment left customers without power ranging from just minutes to several hours, according to Edison officials.

"SCE crews are being allowed some limited access into some wildfire areas, but due to safety concerns, fire officials have not yet allowed SCE crews into some wildfire areas to begin damage assessment and grid repairs, which will delay some service restoration efforts," the statement said.

Oh, my LCF friend said that they were dismayed that Glendale wasnt updating their information, so they decided to include whatever they knew was accurate.

John and Ken on KFI are talking to Shambala Preserve’s Tippi Hedren as a guest.

It’s a big-cat and other exotic animals rescue located in Acton, CA. They evac’d some of the animals right away when the fire began to spread northward from La Canada but they ran into problems. Where do you evacuate a full grown male lion to, for example. So I’m interested to hear what she has to say.

Has she thought of the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound in Rosamond? They have all kinds of big (and small) cats there.

link to their location (zoom out a couple clicks for orientation). They're holding in place but ready to leave. Each animal has its own safety transport crate. Sounds like they have it together. They don't accept any animal without creating an escape plan for its evacuation. Strike teams are on location too.

She didn’t mention it but I’d be shocked if they didn’t work together. I’ve been up to that Rosamond compound. It’s neat.

They (LCF)certainly have helped!

On Charter Cable - channel 6 - Glendale has evacuation details, etc., but only for the part of La Crescenta that is “Glendale”. They did say their website was “down to the fire” which didn’t make any sense to me.

An interesting sidenote - it was about a month ago that the Briggs Terrace residents had an evacuation drill. They had started to be concerned with the dry brush and got the sheriff & fire dept involved. Over 100 residents participated. I’m sure they are glad now that they did.

“do you guys make a habit of chastizing scared people for being sensitive and defensive in your daily lives? wtf?

Yep. Just because she’s got a problem ddoesn’t mean she gets to take it out on the rest of us. She needs to grow the Hell up and and act like an adult and take care of her situation instead of lashing out like a liberal.

Yep. Shambala is passed right by the trains that run between L.A. and Mohave and points further. I'm not near Mt. Wilson. It's on the other side of the mountains from me. FF are expecting a stand at Littlerock Dam, however, which is the final stop before threatening hundreds of homes in Juniper Hills, CA (to the east of it).

If you are talking about the Yosemite National Park, state laws don't apply to federal property.
