CBS/SHOWTIME AIRS NAZI-LIKE ASSAULT
Catholic League ^ | August 28, 2009 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 08/31/2009 4:09:22 PM PDT by Mrs. Frogjerk

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on last night’s edition of Penn & Teller’s show. The program aired on Showtime which is owned by CBS:

The Nazis couldn’t have done better. Having been in this job for over 16 years, I have never seen a more defamatory, obscene and vicious show on TV. And I mean about any religious or demographic group—not just Catholics. The lies about the Catholic Church, to say nothing of the vile language used by Penn Jillette, were positively astounding. Moreover, it never attempted to be comedic—from the very beginning it advertised the show as payback for 2,000 years of alleged crimes. This was Julius Streicher back from the grave.

In this half-hour show, the Catholic Church was blamed for every evil in history. Jillette said the “intolerance, greed, paranoia, hypocrisy and callous disregard for human suffering” was the hallmark of the Catholic Church. Others on the show branded the Church an “amoral” and “power hungry” institution that is just worried about its “cash flow.”

Jillette lied about the Vatican’s reaction to Sabina Guzzanti, an Italian foul-mouthed comedian who staged an assault on the pope in 2008: the pope never sought to throw “her sexy ass in jail” and never once sought any punitive measure against her—it’s all a bald face lie! Jillette lied about a 1962 Vatican document—it was a statement about penalties for priests who used the confessional to solicit sex: it was not a cover-up for sexual misconduct! He lied about Pope Benedict XVI—he had absolutely nothing to do with overseeing cases of priestly sexual misconduct in the United States! And so on.

Wow, that was a very impressive video. This man may say he’s an atheist, but there is a seed inside him that may just grow because of this man’s witness.

I didn’t mean Christianity and non. I’m not religious in any way, although not atheist. I meant more in terms of mindset.

There is definitely a different mindset between believers and non-believers, and democrats and republicans. I’ve always believed that.

Goebbels couldn;t have arranged it better. NBC is in the pocket of the Obama national socialist movement.

What do you expect from them, kissy, kissy?

They did the same thing in Europe prior to declaring a master race.

Here there doing it by proclaiming supposedly justified , complete social control before unilaterally passing the "Health Care Bill."

You dirty rotten religious zealots who insist on freedom, we will show how nasty you were during the Inquisition ( a small voice says: "I wasn't alive then!")

Well lets turn the tables and show everyone how BAD the national socialists ( which is what Obama is and by proxy, NBC is too.)were in Germany and Italy EH??? Time to ante up and attack!!!!!

Mr. Donohue needs to read his Church history. I love the Catholic religion....but the history of the Church is horrifying. I rationalize it as the human flaw factor. The true faith has nothing to do with the heinous acts and crimes against humanity of which the men of the Church were horribly guilty.

Mr. Donohue did read it...you are the one that has misinterpreted history....in the "progressive" (revisionist) mode.....

Bureaucracies always have corruption and the Catholics had their share. That said, ALL OTHER CULTURES had histories far worse than those governed by the Catholic and Christian countries on the whole. Look at the Mayans or the Aztecs Or the Hindus and the Arabs, Spartans, etc. and you will find far more inhumane practices.

At least the Catholic Church put vast resources into searching for the Truth, throughout history with St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, Mendel and the monastery education which had great effect on people like Galileo and Columbus, John Locke, Blackstone and many other famous people and led to the founding of the US--the greatest culmination and philosophical paradigm in the history of the world.

Thus, you could say Catholicism led to the most freedom in the history of the world for every race, including (unheard of ...women, children) than has ever been accorded any peoples in the history of the world.

Without the Catholic paradigm, which all Christianity flowed, thinking would not have evolved--the likes of John Milton, Dostoyevsky, Pascal, Descartes, etc., would never have had the opportunities to develop their thinking and achieve what they did if it hadn't been for the Catholic theology that preceded them.

The Catholic Church had changed the Western Civilization paradigm which produced men like Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, not to mention the architects--it goes on and on and the improvement of Western Civilization by Christian thinking has led to the most productive, loving, self-sacrificing people on the face of the earth.

>>I am a protestant, and very grateful to Christ that my salvation is His hands, not in the hands of any mortal man.<<

I am a Catholic. Do you think that my salvation is in the hands of mortal man?

Which one?

"Well, since islam also has a barbaric “present” and a barbaric “future”, yeah, I guess talking about its barbaric “past” might be, ah, not a good career move."

Very well put - with implications far reaching.

What the Catholic Church may or may not have done in the past, its present can (with force of will currently not in evidence) stand as a beacon of civility and the sanctity of life.

Whether any Christian denominations have in the past acted with intolerance, cruelty or a lack of adherence to the true meaning of the Scriptures, the bulk of the Christian Church today stands at the gates of civilization against the most retrograde (thank you, Winston) and barbaric force on earth - The Submission that is Islam.

It is disheartening, however, to see the Church cave in on its moral principles, publicly bowing to the Legion of Moloch at Notre Dame and Georgetown, followed by blessing the burial of the Senate's Patron Saint of Abortion.

I have no doubt that in the Enemy's plan, the bloodbath of abortion served to desensitize many to the barbaric use of women and children by the bloody moon god.

The coming American Revolution, Part Two will no doubt be a Tenth Crusade as well. You are right about the bad career move - Penn doesn't strike me as a Holy Warrior.

When are Penn & Teller going to renounce their American citinzenship? After all, America has a pretty horrid past in regards to misdeeds and crimes committed against many.

Lets see, slavery was legal at one time, countless Native Americans were slaughtered, Japanese American citizens were interred for no good reason, etc. etc.

Should we all renounce our citizenship or should we go on and try to make sure that these things do not happen again and try to improve life for all?

Doesn’t the Catholic Church give support to people like Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi et al tacitly endorsing their positions on infanticide? Might help if they found even a little objection to that.

Yep, that’s about the picture I see as well. We’ve devolved into a coarse, craven, materialistc culture with few to speak against it all. I am a practicing Catholic and was - once again - aghast at the way they honored a very publicly infamous defier of our doctrines and teachings with a public Mass. I watched this thing on The History Channel on “Sex and the 60s” and having even lived through it as a teenager, I found it chilling to realize what so many of my generation fell for with sex as the bait. They say Mary Jo Kopechne was under less than 7 feet of water. I think we’re under far more than that.

When has the Catholic Church given it’s public support to these people? The vatican has openly chastised Ted Kennedy for his pro abort stance, John Kerry was told not to receive Communion, Nauseating Nancy was called to the Vatican by Pope Benedict for a smack down regarding her openly rejecting church teachings and portraying herself as a “devout Catholic”. That little meeting wasn’t a social call despite the way that stretch Pelosi played it off.

So basically, What the hell are you talking about?

There were a few people form the church that may have caved to these idiots, but it wasn’t the majority. Threre have been many Catholics in authority that have spoken out against these people publicly so please what is your point. I can pick out some real winners in the protestant church as well if you would like. Perhaps I should blame all of the Protestant church’s for their shortcomings.

“When has the Catholic Church given it’s public support to these people?”

Do ya think that the Pope could have intervened and stopped Obama’s vile entrance into Notre Dame? Yes, he could have but he didn’t. That would have made a statement for “life.” I am a Catholic but the moment Obama was allowed to take over Notre Dame and theoretically the Catholic church, I quit.

Donohue was not addressing all of the church’s dark history. Just the usual lies and garbage spewed about by the haters.

My take on this, which comes from this article alone, is that Penn Jillette was dredging up the church's dark history. So, is that history lies and garbage and if so what dark history would Donohue have to address?

If you read the article, you would see the lies that Donohue was addressing. Where in the article does it state anything about the church’s dark history being dredged up by Penn & Teller? I stated that in my post, it wasn’t in the article.

Donohue was addressing particular points brought up in the show.

Read the actual article, not just my post and then refer to it as the article.

Would you please stop taking it that way.

In no way shape or form has Obama taken over the Catholic Church. In his dreams.

Would I have liked the Pope to have said something, sure. Does it still annoy me that it was allowed to happen, absolutely. However, I will not let it eat me up inside to the point where I would leave the church.

The people running the show are far from perfect. But ultimately I do not belong to the church because I like them. I belong to the Catholic Church because of Christ.
