Justice Stevens slows his hiring at high court

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has hired fewer law clerks than usual, generating speculation that the leader of the court's liberals will retire next year. If Stevens does step down, he would give President Barack Obama his second high court opening in two years. Obama chose Justice Sonia Sotomayor for the court when Justice David Souter announced his retirement in May. Souter's failure to hire clerks was the first signal that he was contemplating leaving the court. Stevens, 89, joined the court in 1975 and is the second-oldest justice in the court's history, after Oliver Wendell Holmes. He is the seventh-longest-serving justice, with more than 33 years and eight months on the court.

Ginsberg will go soon too, I think. Obama will put (at least) three on the court. But it seems like he’ll be swopping Liberals for Liberals, so its not as bad as it could be.

I can’t believe this report. I am sure Justice Stevens will wait until 2013, so he can be replaced by a conservative. /sarc

Stephens was a Gerald Ford appointee. Ford actually was the last Republican President who was openly pro-choice on abortion. I believe Nixon was also pro-choice.

Ford appointed Stevens over the objections of conservatives, which he dismissed (he golfed Saturdays with Tip O’Neill, you know). This would be like Obama appointing Robert Bork to the Court.

Ford was a weakened President anyway - he inherited the Office after Watergate and took a lot of flak for pardoning Nixon

I read a mini-biography on Ford. Interesting and successful life considering his biological father abandoned him and his family when he was an infant. Really a pull your bootstraps up kind of guy. Didnt agree with some of his more liberal policies but overall i think he was a decent guy that never really sought the Presidency but really took one for the team by Pardoning Nixon so that the country could just move on.

The person who got elected was George W. Bush. McCain/Palin was an amazingly strong ticket considering the crappy job that GWB did with the economy and the war in Iraq.

Don’t forget that George W. Bush was not allowed to attend a Palin campaign event unless he wore a bag over his head.

Yet more proof that elections have consequences.

On another thread, it noted that 57% of Americans responding to a Rasmussen poll would replace the current Congress (which I really doubt we will do - not enough anger/outrage). But, assuming that we actually follow through and DO replace the Congress, we also need to dump the majority of the SCOTUS to get justices who understand that their function is to interpret law based on the Constitution and NOT get creative!! Sotomayor, Ginsburg, Stevens, etc., need to be bounced on their keesters and told to go find REAL jobs . . . . . or just go away!

When I think of an obviously SENILE Thurgood Marshall, serving well beyond what he should have, I think of Paul Stevens as well. A good day is if someone keeps them from wearing a striped shirt and plaid pants together.

Elections have consequences. Now we are stuck with a leftie in that spot for decades. Of course RINO McCain wouldn’t have picked a real conservative just someone less bad.

I suspect all the liberals who are not power mad will take this opportunity to leave in order to be replaced by liberals since it is becoming more obvious by the day that zero will be a one term carter.

On the other hand ... power can be very tempting.

I am praying that Stevens stays in good health until January 21 2013, then he can have a heart attack.

Why pick on McCain when the true villain was George W. Bush? What a disaster he was.

Pro-abortion, you mean. Pro-"choice" is a despicable PC term by the media to make fetal genocide sound respectable.
