Democrat Charles Rangel and Taxes: "Do as I Say, Not as I Do"
Entitlement Syndrome ^ | 09/02/2009 | Scott Michaels

Posted on 09/02/2009 8:02:00 AM PDT by BigKahuna

I confess to having a soft spot in my heart for old-style, Tammany Hall pols like New York Democrat Charles Rangel, current chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee -- which is the same committee another loveable old rogue, disgraced Illinois Democrat Dan Rostenkowski, used to oversee back in the day.

Both are from an era that's long past, and for good reason, too. Old Dan ended up doing time in the slam for a myriad of corrupt practices, including mail fraud, and Rangel could find himself going in the same direction, if current news reports are correct.

Now, I don't know if Rangel himself is actually as corrupt and venal as Rostenkowski turned out to have been, but he certainly appears to be giving the king of backroom wheeling and dealing a run for his money lately. From out of nowhere, it seems, Congressman Rangel has suddenly amended required financial disclosure forms going back to 2001 in an effort to "fix errors in his financial reporting," according to one of his aides.

Byron York of the Washington Examiner, in an article entitled "The clock is ticking on tax cheat Charlie Rangel," lays out fully the depth and breadth of Rangel's serial tax cheating, which includes failing to report on assets he held which added up to more than 1 million dollars.

… At any rate, House Republicans -- proving that even they can occasionally make out a tactical and strategic opportunity to smack the Democrats around when it presents itself -- have been introducing legislation they've named the "Rangel Rule," which would codify into law the same treatment for private citizens that the good Congressman from the Big Apple received at the hands of the IRS over his own tax evasion.

“Sorry Charlie!”
Starkist’s Charlie the Tuna;
“The advertisements depicted Charlie (voiced by actor Herschel Bernardi) as a hipster wearing a beret and glasses, whose goal is to be caught by the StarKist company. Charlie believes that he is so hip and cultured that he has “good taste,” and he is thus the perfect tuna for StarKist. Charlie is always rejected in the form of a note attached to a fish hook that says, “Sorry, Charlie.”

Those Washington Post and New York Timed stories really hurt huh? They’re treating this like a HUGE scandal. I mean its the top story at CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS isn’t it??

Oh wait... I forgot... he’s a Democrat. The media doesn’t care if he eats children for dinner, a 20-year old Republican thesis is a bigger story to them.

Yeah, Bob McDonnell’s college thesis gets more play than actual criminal activity on the part of one of the top Dems in the House. Unbelievable.

The MSM is totally corrupt and its house needs to be burned down.

Google search turns up some hit or miss articles from Aug 28.

I bet Republicans wish their problems would be one day stories like when Teddy drowned a mistress.

The article and commenters here have failed to mention the cherry on top of Rangel's gross hypocrisy: The changes he placed into the health care bill which would remove taxpayer protections for honest errors. Not just corrupt and hypocritical, but evilly so.

If anyone else did what Rangel did with his finances they would have long ago been in a federal prison for income tax evasion. There is am obvious double standard for the politically connected. Just look at Daschle and Geitner as well as Rangel, none of us would have gotten away with these tax shenanigans.
