in a message issued by the Diocese of Sioux City (The Church on Universal Healthcare)

Unlike a prudential concern like national defense, for which government monopolization is objectively good—it both limits violence overall and prevents the obvious abuses to which private armies are susceptible—health care should not be subject to federal monopolization. Preserving patient choice (through a flourishing private sector) is the only way to prevent a health care monopoly from denying care arbitrarily, as we learned from HMOs in the recent past. While a government monopoly would not be motivated by profit, it would be motivated by such bureaucratic standards as quotas and defined "best procedures," which are equally beyond the influence of most citizens. The proper role of the government is to regulate the private sector, in order to foster healthy competition and to curtail abuses. Therefore any legislation that undermines the viability of the private sector is suspect.

Somebody tell Rush so he can rebut that bozo that that called his guest host on Monday claiming that Caritas en Veritatis is a mandate for socialized medicine.

I was cringing at what I thought the article might say-But, it is good. Read it.

As for Kennedy- in church last Sunday we prayed for him. Unfortunately the first thing that came to mind- after they called for prayers for him, was, "waitress sandwich" and his pro abortion politics- I mean forgive me Lord, I prayed for him, but, I was thinking these things.

I also thought about how we didn't pray for the two firefighters who were killed while trying to out-run the fire on Mt. Wilson (California wildfires). Their vehicle went over a cliff because of poor visibility from the smoke.

The church is in the general area, near the Station fire. It wasn't in any danger of being burned- but when Mass was over there were ashes all over my car, and the smoke is everywhere.

It just didn't seem right to me. To be fair- maybe they hadn't gotten the news about the firemen yet. I don't know.

Aside from the fact that Sioux City is the world’s largest unflushed toilet, this is encouraging news.

No, but he was highly honored when actually he was at best scum who did not up hold the principles of the church. I found it utterly unbelievable.

The Roman Catholic Church did not "canonize" anybody last week, to my knowledge.

You may wish to acquaint yourself with the meanings of the words you use (i.e. "canonize") before compromising your credibility so effectively.

I trust the Holy Father, while not surprised, was likewise disappointed.

This thread is about the Church's position on "universal healthcare." So, since you haven't much to say about that, maybe you should find another thread to disprupt.

Pax.

Thanks. My wife is more of a TV watcher than I am. I came to the conclusion a while ago that for all the channels out there, it’s a content wasteland.

Besides, shows I may be interested in come out on DVD so soon now that I can edit my own programming and avoid commercials. I find I save a lot of time that way.

May have to make a brief exception for the Winter Olympics though, I love to watch the downhill and xc skiing and found that I enjoy watching curling more than I thought I would. :)
