Film maker Mia Engberg explains the genesis of Dirty Diaries, a movie made up of 12 'feminist porn' shorts that has been generating heated debate across Sweden in the lead-up to its premiere this week.
A few years ago I was asked if I wanted to make a short film on a mobile phone. The result was Come Together, a film in which a number of women point the camera at their faces while masturbating.
The film was put onto the internet and provoked a strong reaction. A lot of the reactions were negative, with comments like: "Damn, they're ugly. Could they not at least have put on some make-up." I found the comments interesting. They showed that we're still living with the age-old belief that a woman and her sexuality should please the beholder above all else.
Throughout the history of art, the image of woman has been created by men. The gaze has been a man's gaze and female sexuality has been limited to a few identities that have suited the patriarchal system (and the male artistic ego): whore, wife, mother, muse.
Now, in 2009, it's high time for a change. With this in mind I asked a number of female artists, film makers and activists to each make an erotic film showing new images of women and sexuality, images that are not created with a profit motive or for the benefit of a male audience.
We have been faced with many questions. Is there a female sexuality that can be differentiated from its male counterpart and, if so, what does it look like? Is it possible to be subject and object at the same time? How can we liberate our own sexual imagination from the commercial images we see every day and that seep into our subconscious minds?
In many ways we have had to reinvent ourselves. In order to create a new genre. And to view the world with a new gaze.
So what is feminist porn? There's no easy answer to that question. Dirty Diaries is made up of twelve very different films: soft erotica and hardcore porn, hetero and homo, provocation, penetration and visual poetry... This is just the beginning, and I hope to see the creation of more alternative images that challenge stereotypical gender roles.
I won't argue with that statement.
It sure does, just like Marsian vegetable porn often tends to do.
But, to begin with, why should Swedish tax payers finance it (this project received $59 000 from the Swedish government in production support)?
Furthermore, anyone who expresses her(?)self in this way is obviously somewhat daft;
"The film was put onto the internet and provoked a strong reaction. A lot of the reactions were negative, with comments like: "Damn, they're ugly. Could they not at least have put on some make-up." I found the comments interesting. They showed that we're still living with the age-old belief that a woman and her sexuality should please the beholder above all else."
- PLEASE try and understand that what these people desperately are trying to explain to you is that, regardless of gender roles, PORN should always please the beholder.
Okay so what, the guy is bent over a barrel, has a ball gag in, while some woman named “Midge” is approaching with some artificial appendage that says “Rodbuster” on the side?
Porn,in general,is pretty degrading to both men *and* women.But I’ll wager that “feminist” porn doesn’t feature a single “Y” chromosome.
Once again the government has to step up to make something that the consumer won’t...consume.
That HAS to be the reason!
I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that your appearance makes people physically ill.
"Erotica" is what gets me hot.
"Porn" is what gets you/judges hot.
I don't recall who originally said this.
There is a book of porn for women. It shows attractive men, dressed, and doing housework.
If you don’t want the ‘male gaze’ to watch you masturbating, don’t film it and put it up on the internet.
Problem solved.
Beauty is imposed by men?
Pffft.
Beauty, in men and women, is a strong signal of:
Good genetic material (even face, proportional, etc)
Fitness/Health
Intelligence (yes, pretty people are smarter, too)
Wealth/Status/Upbringing
Fertility
In short, it’s a good signal that the individual would be a good (biological) mate.
Trying to pass off a fat-butted, cockeyed, hairy girl as a “new” form of beauty simply flies into the face of biology.
“They showed that we’re still living with the age-old belief that a woman and her sexuality should please the beholder above all else.”
Pornography absolutely exists to please the beholder. What else could possibly be the point? Someone must be pleased, most often not by being disgusted. But if that’s what excites them, there’s still excitement, so everything’s as it should be. Ugliness turns some people on, so I guess sex films with ugly people still constitute pornography. Don’t be surprised, however, if there’s a limited market.
I’m guessing what the creators of these films were shooting at was an artistic rather than a specifically pornopgraphic appreciation of their work. That’s a whole other subject, and incidentally the whole problem with modern art.
Is that Barney Frank?
I looked at the trailer and I didn’t see an unattractive woman in the lot. Won’t buy the film or search for it beyond the tailer but...
Was thinking the same thing.
Hollyweird has this problem, too. You see, if the "beholders" don't buy tickets and watch, there's no point in making the film.
Surprisingly, no. This person has been put off of men and sausages...

BUY the film? It should be FREE:
“How can we liberate our own sexual imagination from the commercial images we see every day...”
If it is sold it automatically becomes a commercial image.
Kinda scary some many had the same reaction.
Looks just like Barney Fag.

so when a woman makes a female porn film, its for the men, not the women....
God have mercy on that sausage.
Like being slaughtered, finely chopped and then squeezed into a casing wasn't enough..
Um, oh wow, uh, excuse me, what did you say?
auntie
They should be in the sequel. A proper sequel is a remake of the first film, only better.
I knew a guys whose job it was to program the comptuters that wrote the framework of bodace-rippers.
Basic plot:
Woman: (1) alone and/or with children and/or aged parents
widowed/betrayed/career driven/saving self because of old doubts
Moves to new location, or old home town, or ancetral home town
Handsome manly man driven by: revenege, old issues, duty to country parents, duty patients, business, whatever — no time for women
They meet.
Conflict resolves due to: action of woman, fight scene, sacrifice of XYZ
Man’s passion is redirected to woman. She becomes center of his universe
The end.
“auntie”
- IMO, aunties should be sweet, elderly women sending you large bills on your birthdays:)
True but hypocrisy and ignorance is a tenant of the left
Naaaah.
It proves that women who expose themselves with a sexual display on the internet, are looking to please the beholder instead of just themselves.
Why else would they put their most private acts in an online video for everyone to see?

Been done.
- Good point. Could be the money though..
The government money that is.
In most countries, many guys who, for some reason, do not bother to court a woman IRL spend money on various sorts of porn they find appealing to their senses.
In Sweden however, hard working citizens of all sorts are robbed of their money by the government in order to buy them porn that the vast majority of them find completely uninspiring.
I have often pointed out on this forum that Sweden has become less of a Socialist hellhole during the last decades, but it also turns out Socialism constantly is trying to find new ways over here..
Ka-ching! Just ripped the Swedish tax payers off by close to 60 Gs for something that can be found 10-thousandfold on the ‘net for free (and isn’t any more or less “artistic” - think Paris Hilton). Just wrap stupidity in “art words” and there you go... Seems like the prevailing gimmick these days. Man, those Nigerian scammers are children, comparatively.
THAT’S the one I was talkin’ bout a couple of weeks ago, Slings. LOL on the poster of it!
Sounds like Saturday nights at La Casa de John Kerry
OMG that looks like a total southwest suburban Chicago old lady.
I have a deep appreciation for groundbreaking cinema.
How degrading. I am personally offended that males should be portrayed in that demeaning manner and exploited to satisfy the prurient interests of women. Shame on such women for harboring such fantasies. I am sure that viewing such things will be bad for these women and will destroy any chance that they can form wholesome, stable relationships based on mutual respect.
Isn't it interesting to observe how a politically-motivated minority can ignore one of the most basic differences between men and women? It is vitally important to such people to attempt the removal of all such differences.
I don't think they are going to make much progress in this particular area. Of the many billions being spent on porn every year, I would be surprised if even 1% was targetted at women. In this realm, men and women want different things and for some very good biological reasons.
P.S. Your mention a few weeks ago was indeed what made me think of it. Thanks!
You have a humongous, immeasurable gift.
Except I thought it was “spicy” instead of “saucy.” LOL.
What a coincidence! That’s what people said about the star of that movie!
Mia Enberg = Obama’s porn Czar. She would fit right in.
OK, that is Barn Frank in drag. Seriously. It is. HIt has to be. If not, then it is a dead ringer for Barney Frank in drag.
;-)
I hate it when that happens.
That’s a sizable blessing that you are endowed with.
;^)
- Awesome,
You just managed to form an intelligible sentence involving all of the following ingredients;
* Ka-ching
* Swedish tax payers
* 60 Gs
* on the net for free
* Paris Hilton
* Nigerian scammers
On the other hand, the Feminists of my nation provided you with plenty of inspiration, didn’t they:D
Cheers!
