President Obama's speech to students outrages Oklahoma GOP legislators

Republican state lawmakers are sounding off against President Barack Obama's plan to address school children Tuesday.

The Democratic president plans to talk to school children in an address that will be streamed live over the Internet on the White House Web site.

State Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said allowing Obama to speak directly to students is "indoctrination."

"No president, Republican or Democrat, should interrupt the education process in this manner," Kern said. "Our children should not be exploited this way for partisan purposes."

In 1991, President George H.W. Bush, a Republican, addressed the nation's students, urging them to avoid drugs, study hard and report troublemakers.

State Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, said he is concerned because Obama is to address such topics as global warming, environmental conservation and other social issues.

"President Obama's topics are best left for parents to talk about with their children, not the president of the United States," said Brogdon, who is running for governor in 2010.

State Sen. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma City, compared the president's efforts to speak to school children with indoctrination programs seen in communist countries and Nazi Germany.

"I'm concerned parental rights are being usurped by this," Russell said. "This is akin to something you would see in North Korea or under Saddam Hussein's Iraq. It attempts to create a cult of personality and goes directly against our personal liberties."

Finally they are catching on to ZERO although Oklahoma only gave him 34% of the vote so we caught on before the election.

I couldn’t believe that paperwork that was sent out. Here is the info on the Bush speech about drugs:

President Bush pleaded with young people around the nation today to stop using drugs and ‘’not to look the other way’’ when others do.

In a 15-minute nationally televised plea from the White House library, the President presented the latest round of an anti-drug campaign that began a week ago with another nationally broadcast message announcing a $7.9 billion package.

Don’t leave out the US Congress. Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Boxer, Feinstein, Rangel, Waters, Dodd, Frank, Murtha, et al. are all as evil and guilty of attempting to destroy this country and steal our freedom. Americans must never allow their plans for Government/Big Brother determining who lives and who dies aka RAT euthanasia. It’s their plan to prop up Social Security by reducing those around to collect.

Liberals need to stay out of OK as they already control enough states.

Liberals are like Terminators - they will never stop until you are dead.

I don’t recall that, but even if GHWB did a 15 minute address during school hours on CNN, I think he had no business doing it. Classrooms were less “wired” in those days so he probably reached only a fraction of classrooms, and such one shot deals aren’t going to accomplish anything even if for the best of causes.

My objection is that no politician should be granted a captive audience, for any purpose. It’s just anti freedom and anti-free choice. That also goes for teachers who use their position to preach personal views, and I know it is all to common, but efforts to fight it should be increased.

They, too, will face God as we all do, however, they will fall way short.

If I didn’t have to move back to CA to be with my elderly parents, I’d probably take you up on it. I bet Oklahoma could use 4 highly intelligent conservative children. :)

The longer I have lived in Oklahoma, the happier I am we moved here when Kelly AFB, TX, closed. We had several choices but Oklahoma seemed right for the kids and it has turned out to be a wise decision.

Oklahoma is a wonderful place with some of the nicest people I have ever met.

The people are definitely great. It reminds me of the summers I spent with family in these parts. There's a cultural difference in this part of the country, a very good cultural difference. I can't imagine a better place to raise kids.

My extended family is originally from Oklahoma, and I've been trying to get back here for many years. It was all a matter of finding a job. Then one dropped into our laps at just the right time — God is good!

That’s awesome! We had a choice of Tinker AFB here in OK or Robins AFB GA. That was a no brainer — Tinker won hands down.
