A Pennsylvania history buff who recreates firearms from old wars accidentally fired a 2-pound cannonball through the wall of his neighbor's home.

Fifty-four-year-old William Maser fired a cannonball Wednesday evening outside his home in Georges Township that ricocheted and hit a house 400 yards away.

The cannonball, about two inches in diameter, smashed through a window and a wall before landing in a closet. Authorities say nobody was hurt.

Maybe the old, “I didn’t know it was loaded” ploy.

One of my kids said that after his potato cannon went off in the basement.

It isn’t a cannon, it’s a 1/2 gauge shotgun.

He needs to upgrade to a 10 or 12 pounder and switch to chainshot, no ricochet problems.

The last time I looked, most things with a bore over 0.5 inches was considered an ATF "destructive device."
"(B) any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell which the Secretary finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes) by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter;"

A black-powder cannon capable of firing a 2 pound projectile is probably going to find the owner showing he has the proper registration of the device and was following all associated federal rules in the ownership and operation of a destructive device. These are sometimes called weapons of war.

The guy is going to be lucky to stay out of jail, keep from being put on a terrorist watch list and/or ending up with any property once the fed's through the book at him.

Remember that one of the reasons for the ATF destruction of the Branch Dividians in Texas was the "fear" that they had a WW2 British Boys Anti-tank rifle that had a bore of about 0.55 inches.

Not if it is a black powder muzzleloader or a smoothbore shotgun.
