Tempe, AZ School Directive
KFYI ^ | 9/3/09 | Dr. Arthur W. Tate

Posted on 09/05/2009 6:07:30 PM PDT by charmedone

Tempe Elementary School District No. 3 Superintendent Tate’s Directive Concerning President’s Broadcast

The United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has informed school districts that President Obama will deliver an address to the Nation’s school children on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Arizona time. This will be a live broadcast which can be accessed at the White House website: www.whitehouse.gov. The President’s message will also be broadcast on C-SPAN. The President will talk to the children about “persisting and succeeding in school.”

Parents who wish to view the President’s message can easily do so by using the White House website or C-SPAN. As indicated in the promotional literature, our President will use this unique occasion when talking to our students to “challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning.”

I have directed principals to have students and teachers view the President’s message on Tuesday. In some cases, where technology will not permit access to the White House website, DVDs will be provided to classes on subsequent days.

I am not permitting parents to opt out students from viewing the President’s message, since this is a purely educational event. Parents and interested individuals should access the White House website to learn more about the President’s address. Should you have questions or concerns, feel free to email me at: atate@tempeschools.org.

Dr. Arthur W. Tate, Jr.

Superintendent of Schools

Earth to moonbat: there’s no such thing as a “purely educational” liberal speech. Everything is ideology.

My child would not be attending school. To not allow parents to opt out for their children in this district says it is time for one school Superintendent to bite the dust. What an arrogant position to take. I have never heard of anything extra like this that a parent could not opt their child out of watching.

I opted my children out of the Elders sex ed and then our school opted out of taking federal funds and all the crap that went with having the feds tell you what to do. Ours was truly an independent district!

Why not let your child watch the speech and then discuss it with them over dinner? Analyze it together. Could be a valuable teaching opportunity for most parents. The children will have to live in a country with people who espouse ideas that that they don’t accept.

Headlines in Tempe's newspaper the next day:

CONSERVATIVE FLU SPREADS LIKE WILDFIRE THROUGH ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT; FORTUNATELY ONLY LASTS ONE DAY

"On Tuesday, September 8th, school administrators throughout the district were inundated with telephone calls from parents who woke up to find their children struck down with 'conservative flu'. Symptoms were quite sudden and baffled pediatricians who actually didn't get any victims in their clinics or offices. By the strangest coincidence, symptoms disappeared after President Obama's much ballyhooed and anticipated Education Speech, which surely will place Him on the level of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a gifted orator. On Wednesday the classrooms were back to normal.

"I'm just glad I didn't have to have a shot for the conservative flu!" commented perky first grader Adam Jones. His mother just smiled knowingly in the background as she escorted her son to his first grade classroom.

The address is merely a lead in - it’s the classroom materials the kids will be required to participate in the coming days - weeks? years? - that are the real problem.

he is not asking them to think what they can do for their communities or country - but what they can do for HIM -

HE is not our country.

this is the same way Hitler started in - and soon, it was no longer a choice for the schools/teachers or parents.
then if you Keep your kids out = kids are taken.

Because if Obama gets by with this, it will get worse and he will be talking to ‘the children’ all the time. You need to take a stand not waffle. There is no teaching moment as you are not in the classroom with your child especially the elementary students and you have no clue what is being said.

My children are pushing 30 and are quite able to analyze ideas they don’t accept. We taught them to do this by discussing what they encountered in high school at the dinner table. We home schooled through grade 8. If I had children of school age I would do just that. A peaceful society requires citizens to listen to one another’s ideas respectfully and judge the ideas on their merits.

I asked my kids’ schools if they would have comrade obama’s speech. They said they would but would send home a permission slip that had to be signed in order for my kids to watch it. No slip came home with them on Friday so I’ll have to do a followup with the schools on Tuesday morning.
I’d be willing to let my kids see it IF I could watch it with them. Then I could also give them lessons on the Hitler Youth and how it was started.

I would like to remind everyone that a large part of Obama’s plan includes “mandatory” student participation Obama’s “community service” as a requirement for graduation.

Democrats have been sneaking this crap in for years around the US, forcing children to “participate” in their schemes or to be punished, by denying them graduation, and also demanding “service” before admission to college.

Would anyone be surprised if elementary school children soon had mandatory “ACORN days?” And how many? Once a year, once a month, or once a week?

You don’t know what is said in the classroom as a parent. I tutored reading for 16 years in the public schools to know well enough there are some liberal teachers who will take the opportunity to push their liberal agenda in certain schools to their students if given the opportunity.

My children were pretty good at summarizing the ideas put forth in classroom discussion. They also became good at understanding and constructing a response to ideas they concluded were fallacious. They still do this as adults.

The way they'll get around this:

"We'll send home a paper for you to sign IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR CHILD TO WATCH." This way, "your kid must have lost the paper," is their answer AFTER the fact.

You have jumped to a conclusion without even listening to the speech.

The conclusion is being reached through observing what BHO has said and done during the last 8 months.

What do you think of his Presidency so far? Answer that question and you will clear up a lot of questions about you for the rest of us.

Last week I spoke with my principal when I heard about the upcoming speech.

I also spoke with a member of our BOE who was outraged that the proper channels were not followed in setting this whole thing up.

On Friday I again asked my principal if our school district was going to be watching the video because I would need to put it in my lesson plans.

She did not get back to me, so it is NOT in my plans.

At 12 noon my students will be illustrating and labeling the position of the earth and sun in relationship to the four seasons.

Most states allow taping of telephone conversations so long as ONE of the parties is aware of the taping. I believe Arizona follows that and I would love to argue that it would apply here also.
