Dear CCPS Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members:
Earlier this week, we learned that President Obama was preparing to deliver a nationwide live speech to school children on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at noon. The stated purpose of the speech is to encourage students to set and achieve challenging goals as well as take responsibility for their learning. The speech is expected to last approximately 15 minutes.
We have been assured that this is not a political activity and that the speech will not have political messages; however, we have not had the opportunity to view the speech.
Once we received information about the speech on September 2, 2009, CCPS staff began to investigate the logistics of showing this speech to over 16,500 students. Simultaneously, the event became a matter of controversy both in our community and across the nation.
It is our decision to make the speech available to our high school students during their one-hour lunch program if they are interested in viewing it. Students can choose from a variety of activities, and no one will be required to participate in the event.
Prior to Tuesday, high school students and parents may want to discuss not only their view of the event but also how it fits into the larger picture of public discourse in a democratic society.
Elementary and middle school students will not have the opportunity to view the speech on Tuesday at school for two reasons.
First of all, logistically it is impossible for us to stage the event for all children at the elementary and middle levels because many students are at lunch or in physical education, art, or recess during that time. In order to show the speech to all children, the school day at all 19 middle and elementary schools would have to be significantly altered, including lunch service.
Secondly, because of the short notice we received about the event, we are unable to put a reasonable process in place that would allow parents to opt their children out of the event. Following the Presidents speech, a link to the video will be posted on the CCPS website so parents who choose to do so can view it with their children and have discussions about the message.
Furthermore, once teachers and principals have had the opportunity to view the speech, they may find that it would be an appropriate instructional resource to use in a particular lesson during the coming months.
A form requesting that a child be excused from such an activity will be sent home on Tuesday with elementary and middle school students.
In addition, CCPS staff will not be using the lesson plan materials provided by the United States Department of Education for any activity before, during, or after the Presidents address.
Sincerely,
Jack Smith, Ph.D. Calvert County Superintendent of Schools
This being the reddest county in Steny Hoyer's district, it should sent the message to Obama and his stooges to back off our kids.
The can use the speech durin gtheir lesson on ‘propaganda’ and Goebbels
It is a sad state of affairs that this country has sunk to a point that the President cannot give a speech without great trepidation on the part of parents. I am not saying that their fears are not somewhat well founded based on the sleazy political posturing of this administration. The hatred by the left the past 8 years left no room for the right to have any interest in even listening to the guy.
There is one district (Dallastown Area) where the Supt. Dr. Stewart Weinberg Stewart.Weinberg@dallastown.net is refusing to let parents pull their children from viewing the speech, citing state law that only allows opt-out for religious conscience or for dissection/vivasection.
Now I happen to believe that this is a religious (First Commandment) issue--don't subject your child to the cult of Obama.
Freep his mailbox!
THAT is what scares me. These liberal teachers are brainwashing the kids all the time! Any chance they can inject their socialism into the lives of these kids, they will darn sure do it!
More info ping.
This needs to become a rallying cry.
Not just the single indoctrination. It goes on daily. But this is a great way to keep on the issue.
Start with the speech, but make “Keep politics out of the classroom” the rallying cry.
This could be a profound opportunity. People understand this - this is a moment than can redefine the entire landscape.
If McCain doesn’t mess it up by saying something stupid...
Absolutely chilling: The ignorance that would prevent young children from hearing the inspirational voice of The 0ne who alone is a shining example of study (although we hardly know where he himself went to school) and self-motivation (although that motivation consists of establishing socialism in place of a free republic).
Only 200 days into his administration and he has created such and aura of distrust that parents cant trust him to give a speech to their children. Bush never engendered this much distrust in all eight years of his presidency.
The left poisoned the well by their incessant hatred of George W. Bush and now they wonder why they can’t get a fresh drink.
Congratulations to the citizens of Calvert County for having such a great Superintendent!
The question becomes, is this speech intended for the choir at public expense, to rally troops or indoctrinate/influence a specific group, prone to identity politics as a recruitment tool. Further, I have not heard that this is discressionary in all metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta is this intended to plant the seed for the civilian national security force subsidized by the taxpayer?
“This could be a profound opportunity. People understand this - this is a moment than can redefine the entire landscape.”
Watching the fox news channel this evening it scrolled across the screen about people in Venezuela protesting, being arrested because they object to the proposed education plan which parents feel is indoctrination.
Excerpt:
“Leaders of the so-called “Democratic Alternative,” a coalition of opposition groups, headed a large demonstration against a new education law approved last month.
Opponents say the law contains provisions intended to indoctrinate students.”

Sure would be great if 9/8/09 turned out to be the day of highest absentee rate for public schools.
This is a real slap in the face, too.
They were pissed off about the Clinton impeachment and the loss of the 2000 election (Clinton’s fault more than anything) and FL especially.

This is a real slap in the face, too.
Beck asked David Horowitz how to counter the ACORN-Soros-blah-blah-blah coalition, and his answer was the become involved with inner city schools and programs where they have held sway for decades. I don’t know too many conservatives who would like to subject themselves to liberal Democrat hell holes for years on end for the sake of bringing our country more in tune with its founding principles.

Why are they even showing it at all?
They are openly admitting they are concerned about what he might say and want to review it first. Even the libs don’t trust ZERO.
