THERE were angry clashes in a city centre today as right-wing protesters fought with anti-fascist campaigners in a busy shopping street. A planned demonstration by The English Defence League in central Birmingham descended into violence as the group charged along New Street, close to the city's main train station.
One onlooker said: "There were about 250 people in total, fighting and throwing bottles at each other."
The disorder spilled onto the adjoining Bennetts Hill, a street lined with a number of pubs, popular with shoppers.
Dozens of riot police worked to contain the disturbance and a police helicopter hovered overhead.
A police spokeswoman said there had been "pockets" of trouble but could not confirm whether any arrests had been made.

Aren't those the same thing? They are here, at least nowadays. British politics are weird.
I stumbled over the exact same phrase and for the exact same reason.
But you and I are better educated than the “journalist” who wrote this piece.
This journalist (and the typical, ill-educated liberal) still believe most fascists are right-wingers.
We know, however (from studies such as Jonah Goldberg’s “Liberal Fascism”), that fascism is a form of Statist tyranny, and, as such, is more in-line with leftist/liberal ideology than the limited-government, pro-liberty and pro- individualism that is the soul of conservative ideolgy.
So, “anti-fascist” in this case means socialist/communist.
Ain’t Multiculturalism grand?
Coming to a street near you.
What’s strange is that I don’t think of the Sun as being notably leftist. You might expect this kind of twisted language from the Manchester Guardian. But the Sun?
Didn’t ya get the memo? Fascism is strictly a right wing philosophy according to the left. They view our patriotism as unfounded nationalism. Replace the nationalist element with a global one and it’s not considered Fascism. That’s why globalists are ‘good’ and we are the ‘Nazis.’
This is how every leftist thinks. They are too stupid to realize that our patriotism is towards the strong spirit of individualism and liberty that this nation was founded upon.
We are patriotic towards liberty. Their loyalties are with leaving all our decisions in life to a class of elites in the ‘global community’ because, after all, they know what’s best for us.
They are the Fascists. Their globalism is their ‘nationalism.’
Facists are leftwing. Everyone knows that.
The pictures clearly show that the “anti-facists” were MUSLIMS.
Socialists battle Progressives on city streets as communists scuffle with statists!
Yep the pictures seem to show that the right wing prostesters were protesting and attacked by the fascists the paper called “anti-fascists.”
So, anti-fascist in this case means socialist/communist.
Had same reaction...to the left, since Liberalism is a Mental Disorder (LMD), anything that is against conservatism is something to celebrate. Yet, when you see the images you realize LMD, the supposed anti-fascists are actually Islamofascists. So, lets just lump UK with France and not repeat the last 100 years until they really want to have freedom (at least what is left of it), the Euro-thrash that they are!
Good for the Brits! I have distant cousins in Sweden that had to leave their ancestral home in a northern city because of the Muslim takover, and their government called them racists. They had to move in with their parents in the retirement compound.
I also have friends that live in Leicester in Britain that say Muslims have taken over their neighborhoods and bought all the shops. She says they harrasss them on the streets and in the shops, especially women who don’t cover their arms or hair. And it is totally dangerous near their local convenience store where there are stabbings every week.
don’t forget islamofascism
Great pictures! People are rising up - they are tired of Muslims trying to take over their country.
You read the article, the right-wingers, ie the English Defense League, worked with the police, denounced anyone attaching themselves to their march, who had another agenda than attacking Islamic radicalism or planned to commit violence. What happens here is the “anti-fascists” go out there and commit violence and the media reports “ugliness at a right-wing protest”. Why not ugliness from the left-wingers out to cause mayhem?
The “right wing” English Defence League, just average folks tired of multicultural Liberal BS, and the UK being overrun by immigrants who don’t/won’t assimilate.
I wish I could
Why would they be fighting with themselves?
maybe the "journalist" (what a joke that is) meant that they were fighting with Obama's hired fascist union goons.
oops, this is the Uk, LoL!
I don’t know if the right group are racist or not. I do know white men are fed up with political correctness where they are beneath Muslims and foreigners. A lot of leftist harassment and abuse of Brits going on over there! Also, the British government is now serving as a full blown big brother - a leftist’s wet dream.
The “anti-fascist” mob are communists and socialists enraged at Brits who are getting uppity.
Even a worm will turn.
Not in the topography of British fringe politics, where they've been at opposite street-fighting extremes ever since the Mosleyite/Communist clashes of the 1930s. After the Second World War, there have been a series of reincarnations of extreme socialist/trotskyite groups (usually called the 'Anti-Nazi League' or similar) clashing with extreme Nationalistic/xenophobic/anti-Semitic etc groups (usually named with various permutations of 'National', 'Front', 'British', 'League', etc etc). These clashes long predate the advent of Muslims in any numbers. As far as British political lexicography is concerned, this has always been extreme right versus extreme left: and they would be so described right across the spectrum of mainstream political comment.
Islamofascists are just that. Fascists. They became militant after being inspired by the crushing fist of the Bolsheviks. Yes, their current methods and the boldness of trying to accomplish their ultimate goal of a Global Caliphate were inspired by Soviet-style fascism.
What unites them all is totalitarian authority over the people. Their “utopian” goal is global totalitarianism and an end to all “nations” in favor of the World State.
The weapon they use is lie and slander. They call their opponents (those who want to preserve national sovereignty and the culture of their nation) “fascists” and “xenophobe” and anti-Semite (WHAT A JOKE!! LOOK AT THE TOTALITARIANS OF THE 20th CENTURY AND YOU'LL FIND NO MORE VIOLENT AND MURDEROUS ANTI-SEMITES!!).
This is how they project observers away from what THEY are and condemn their opponents of their own traits, and thus hide their own cause and underlying motives.
The fight is as it has been since the days of Attic Greece: the right of the people to live their lives freely and independently vs. the brutal oppression of those collective forces that try to subject the people to the State.
Please keep in mind that I’m not disagreeing with you.
But one of the tactics of the Statists has been, since its early planning and execution, to create so many factions on the left that those who want to preserve their nation are confused by which group stands for what and who the real enemy is. We get so mired in the details of each little faction we become blind to the powers behind the curtain.
Orwell painted this picture perfectly in his Homage to Catalonia.
Have not heard of the ‘English Defense League’, wonder if it associated with the National Party. There appeared to be two types of protesters: immigrants and traditional leftists (sign from the Socialist Workers Party (Trotskyites).
Of course, that’s right. I remember Oswald Mosley and that whole crowd. But although the labels “left” and “right” have long been used, I’m not sure if they are really applicable. Both groups have always thought of themselves as the wave of the future. Both have totalitarian impulses.
Sometimes it is said that the Nazi sympathizers were elitists, because of the involvement of aristocratic fringe figures like Nancy Astor. But there, again, I think that doesn’t make allowance for the fact that some of those aristocratic Nazi supporters thought of themselves as “reformers.” We see plenty of such people in America today: rich, privileged, even old family, but essentially leftist.
In other words, sure, there have always been at least those two factions that have fought with each other, but you could say the same of the Communists and the Trotskyites. They fight each other because they are trying to occupy the same ground and each think that they would be the best people to seize the levers of power for the good of the people.
