Towers are unnecessary.
You need just a VERY LONG horizontal loop antenna and it will work just fine.
It’s also very easy to fix.

Yes, I know. I'm an RF engineer. Towers are necessary, though, perhaps not because of transmission requirements, but rather simply because they present a much smaller footprint for the tower owner/operator to lease. Generally speaking, tower sites are leased by the square foot and it doesn't come cheap in urban areas.

Idiots don’t even realize that the AM spectrum is already full of natural signals. I wonder what they think the static between radio frequencies is.

The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) issued a statement saying opponents of the towers argue that "AM radio waves cause adverse health effects including a higher rate of cancer, harm to wildlife, and that the signals have been interfering with home phone and intercom lines."

"When all legal channels of opposition have been exhausted, concerned citizens have to take action into their own hands to protect life and the planet," Jason Crawford, a spokesman for the group, said in a news release.

As usual, CNN really pisses me off.

“Activists”?

No.

Terrorists.

Saboteurs.

Insurgents.

But not “activists.”

These idiots are committing what can only be described as acts of war.

I watched that last night. The environwackos are very dangerous. They have no qualms about destroying property or killing people. Spiking trees. Arson. and now apparently gaining knowledge of explosives.

Exactly. Will Federal Authorities go after these punks? I will be very surprised to see them prosecuted as the terrorists they are by this administration since it is full of people who believe similarly.

WAEB is owned by Clear Channel and carries Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh.

I see why they think AM radio waves are a harzard. Unlike the pure and dulcet undulations of NPR.

Well, we KNOW it's not censorship. Why don't these idiots just get a big stack of Common Sense or Arguing with Idiots and have themselves a bonfire. Did they even see Farenheit 451?

True. But my understanding is that FCC rules on antenna efficiency and radiation patterns make horizontal arrays impractical for the AM band.

>> In an unrelated story, the transmission towers for NPR, which use a far stronger signal, remain intact. <<

NPR stations are almost 100% VHF. So I guess the ELF folks would assure us that — unlike the MW frequencies used by AM stations — radiation at VHF doesn’t cause cancer or other environmental problems!
