On national television, President Barack Obama contended this week that his plan to overhaul the country's health care system wouldn't spend a single federal dime on undocumented immigrants.

As he spoke, a Republican congressman called the president a liar - once again bringing the incendiary issue of illegal immigration to the forefront of the national debate on health care.

While some say undocumented immigrants are scapegoats in an already heated debate, others say they are part of a bigger problem about how to handle a national health care crisis to control medical costs.

In a climate of economic trouble and rising insurance premiums, the cost of providing care to illegal immigrants has become a focus of public concern, putting pressure on politicians at all levels of government.

Sacramento and Yolo counties recently said they would begin requiring proof of citizenship before providing treatment at county clinics.

Few dispute that undocumented immigrants pose some financial drain on the nation's health care system, but some experts say the extent of that cost has been wildly exaggerated.

At the same time, health officials worry that denying health care to undocumented immigrants could have costly consequences to public health, particularly in controlling communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis and H1N1 flu.

"Some people are placing the blame for the financial problems that hospitals are having solely on undocumented immigrants. While it is a component of the challenges we have, it is not the sole reason and not the biggest reason," said Jan Emerson, a spokeswoman for the California Hospital Association.

Still, she said, "We know it's a hot-button issue."

Twice, in committee, the republicans wanted to add a proof of citizenship & enforcement of same into the bill. The democrats refused both times. Which leaves a bill with a bunch of words that MEAN NOTHING!

At that he should have walked out. Today, he would be hailed as the next great voice of Conservatism and Freedom. But he didn't, and we have been weakened by his cowardice!

The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868 to protect the rights of native-born Black Americans, whose rights were being denied as recently-freed slaves. In 1866, Senator Jacob Howard clearly spelled out the intent of the 14th Amendment by writing: "Every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country." The original intent of the 14th Amendment was clearly not to facilitate illegal aliens defying U.S. law at taxpayer expense. Current estimates indicate there may be over 300,000 anchor babies born each year in the U.S., thus causing illegal alien mothers to add more to the U.S. population each year than immigration from all sources in an average year before 1965.

This graph shows 34% of uninsured costs come from uninsured legal and illegals using the system, in California. That is a huge percentage. One third is a large percentage, not the biggest, but it is LARGE.

If you don’t think this is a big deal, what if your rates and costs were cut by one third? Your insurance premium, one third less? The system that much less overloaded and taxed (we always hear the system’s resources are over-stretched). Would that not be a very welcome thing?

If the Dems have "universal" programs, they will be universal. The SCOTUS has already decided this case many times. If you put specific language in the Bill to exclude illegals, it will be struck down. Illegals WILL get whatever we get, including free school, and medical care.

IMHO, abortions would also have to be covered in any forced insurance scheme. It is either a free capitalist program, or a socialist forced program. If ALL are required to do "whatever", then ALL will be forced to submit to the rules. For us, that means covering illegals with tax money and Christians supporting abortions with their tax money. There is great moral hazard sleeping in the pages of this Bill. Think of the Catholic and other religious hospitals that will have some big decisions in the future. I think we are all myopic just looking at certain lines on a page. This will make a quantum leap of power for the socialist movement to get what they have been denied for decades. In a year or two, we will be gagging with all the bilge being shoved down our throats. From abortions to stealing organs without permission, to paying for transgendered operations, to who knows what else, will be all "in the Bill". You give up more than money in this scheme, you give up your body to the government and the czar's good judgment.

Just keep repeating, " it's for the children". We have voted for the children and elections have consequences. I see dead people from this one.

What I meant to add to the last post was we are in danger of being taken over by Mexicans and Muslims because of our low birth rate here in the US. Looking at the Muslim Birth Rate in Europe, they make their point quite clearly. They only have a decade or two left for survival.
